It keeps your target centered in your screen, meaning all you have to do is keep your reticule centered (a little up if you're going for headshots) or slightly in front of your enemy if they're at a distance.

It removes a LOT of skill from the equation, completely negates the point of having good controls like these, and just completely fucks up the online game. It's indefensible.

You don't add a lock on system to an online FPS. You just don't.

I've actually played against a hacker online, I was so f*cking pissed off.

He basically ended the match with 54 kills and no deaths. He didn't even try to make it look legit. I hope he and all the rest of the cheating scum get banned.

I'm sorry- but cheaters shouldn't be banned!!
Game developers shouldn't code their games without protections.
I don't cheat and agree it can be frustrating dealing with it-- but I expect the developers to patch and fix their products (AND learn from their past mistakes!)
It really sucks to see nintendo, sony, and microsoft turning on their CUSTOMERS- instead of placing some blame on the developers! Why didn't the servers monitor these values in the 1st place?!
I don't know how Nintendo handles bans- and I can see how a ban on a single game for a specified amount of time (1-3 months) makes sense-- but I'd be troubled to hear of network wide permanent bans.
If anyone is in the wrong- its that hetoan guy who screwed with both the company and the customers-- and is being rewarded for it. Only real losers I see in this situation are the gamers. Pity.

There's two flaws in your thinking:

One, it's impossible to protect a game. Granted, the conduit did it worse that most games, but if you dissassemble any game ISO you'll find things you can change to enable "cheating". The hard part is finding a way to run those cheats. However, the Ocarina cheat engine has allowed hackers to do that for a very long time.

Two, companies release online modes for gamers to experinece fun with each other around the world. Keyword: FUN. Cheating ruins the fun, causing many people to become frustrated and never go online again, while the cheaters go on to ruin more of those fun experiences. Cheaters choose to cheat. It's been widely known that if you cheat in games (like brawl and mario kart for example) you will be banned from the online modes. So when you choose to cheat, you choose to be banned.

Indeed, the true pity is that there are hackers who make codes to ruin people's enjoyment and that there are users who use them to fulfill the hackers satanic ambitions.

I remember back in my XBoxConnect days of modding Halo 2 we would get tired of the game for a while so I went and made some mods and linked to them in my room and people who joined and played downloaded them, it is a different game really. Auto aim is kind of pointless but you'd be amazed how hard it is to get a hit when you are zipping around like Speedy Gonzales. Or how hard it is to snipe while falling from the sky...

What other crime performed can get you a job? You're a great crackhead Joe, the FBI wants to sign you up as an inside source!

People wonder why pirating and hacking and the like continue, because doing so and taking credit is easier than college and the job market.

Crime? What crime did this guy commit? I don't like cheaters either, but since when is patching software a crime?

You're confusing hacking into computer systems (what some term hacker-cracker because of this kind of confusion) with hacking code running in your own system.

Taking someone elses code and changing for your own interest or gain is the same as doing the same on a financial Web site or ATM. Only if you embrace the hack mantra of it's just binary, fit for sharing, it's alteration of what you don't own for benefit that can also be done in a public realm.

'hetoan2 released some patch codes for The Conduit, but initially altered them to corrupt the save files of anyone using them. Now, he told The Wiire, he's working with High Voltage to identify cheaters, whose MAC addresses are currently being sent to Nintendo for banning.'

Wait, so this guy botched his hacking attempts, then tried to backfill by saying "I meant to do that" and now pretends he's never wanted to people to cheat and is helping Nintendo find the cheaters... and you still print an article about this jackass?

I'm with the other posters, you should cover the people working on real homebrew. Not 14 year old cheaters, liars and who can't even stand up and admit they're cheaters once the shit hits the fan!

I interviewed the guy, and he really DID do this on purpose. If you use a Hex to ASCII converter, you'll see that he slipped "fuck you" into the code, as well as a ram editor that corrupts anyone's save file that uses it.

Yes, he DID do this on purpose. But he doesn't have a job with High Voltage. They're just using his information to try to cover for these problems.

Let's just hope that no one finds and posts a code to let you alter your Wii's MAC Address.

"Universal Region Free 20102 bypass

It works on EVERY online game and on EVERY region even WiiWare.

Requirements for Universal REGION FREE: Gecko OS 1.80 or later. Not on USB loaders or Ocarina.

Thanks to hetoan2 giving me the 'F6 code' idea and thanks to all testers, guys you rock.

Edit: COD should work now. Test plz.

[Universal EC20102 bypass - mdmwii - REGION FREE]
F6000001 8001807f
7F83E378 38A00006
D2000004 00000003
3A6000ZZ 9A640005
3A600000 38A00006
60000000 00000000
e0000000 80008000

ZZ = Desired LAST MAC value (it should be different to real MAC)."

Yes, it's been public knowledge for awhile that the same "hetoan2" released (the code you posted above) that lets people bypass the current 20102 bannings.

You are only a dump and verification away from knowing if someone is changing address values but it has to be built-in from the beginning and server-side otherwise it gets bypassed...with yet another altered value. (see:above)

GameShark/ActionReplay/Ocarina devices are very easy to work with as you watch values either during or after play and change/lock them accordingly. The sad part is that this method of cheating has been around for a long long time and yet many in the industry decide to not check for differences with dumps and verifications. (MMOs sure check)

You can't even blame High Voltage here as the onus is on Nintendo and their *ahem* "Most easily soft-modded console ever!" as many like to say on the various homebrew boards.

i don't see what the problem is, its a code found in the game, and if i'm not mistaken, it was found day 1 on gbatemp, and they even said it was a text file or something that wasn't very discrete

Yes, the .txt file found related to the debug menu. There were a ton of weird interesting features on it including a "PSP Mode". But rather that play around with stuff like that and make truly interesting findings, the "hackers" chose to create codes that enable cheats to ruin the online experience of the game for others. That's the problem.

You're clearly not a Wii owner or a follower of the homebrew scene. To that end, you should probably just refrain from commenting.

FYI, Cheaters have been banned from playing games online. And Nintendo calls their service "Nintendo WiFi Connection"

Whether through a sense of morality, or just the limited install-base of the Twilight hack, i really didn't run into too many people that were obviously cheating.

Really, the one i remember seeing the most was people who could walk through walls. They could definitely be killed, and appeared on radar, but they could retreat with perfect impunity.

Hey guys, I was actually the one that wrote the original article and had the conversation with hetoan2 (I happen to read Joystiq as well).

Here's the thing; he doesn't have a "job" now. Instead, he was offered "cool stuff" (to quote an email from High Voltage) in exchange for the codes he handed over to them. Really, he's just cooperating with them. And while the hack was easy enough, I saw a ton of assembly code, enough to think that it wasn't something practically everyone would do.

High Voltage left the door completely open for hacking to happen, which is incredibly unfortunate. However, Nintendo may actually go through with banning cheaters from the Wii's Wi-Fi service entirely. And yes, people CAN change their MAC addresses on the Wii, but how far will they get without getting banned again?

The fact is, even a slap on this wrist to prove that Nintendo is getting serious about it will make the online experience better for everyone involved. If this gets big enough, Nintendo may actually grow up and make a solid online system the next time around, and High Voltage may actually think about security.

"I wasnt mad, I laughed."

Dr. Stabbingworth didn't say that you get angry when it happens to you.

He said that one day you might grow up and really enjoy games for what they offer rather than cheating. And when that day comes, then you will understand our ire.
