It figures. The moment we hear the rumor that Spielberg is interested in making a Halo movie, we learn about an intriguing fan film that we have to imagine would be in deep trouble if a studio project got off the ground. The Britain-based "Chastity Project" is looking to raise around £30,000 (roughly $49,000) to film a movie of the same name in the spring of next year.
They'd be a lot easier to write off as nut jobs if they hadn't already crafted some really cool props, like the Warthog-in-progress you can see above. Here's hoping the lawyers don't inevitably crush their dreams.
[Thanks, Dylan]

Or maybe they couldn't find a junk car from America, and had to make do.

You know I hate to say it but I think that an indie movie would probably be better than a big studio production.
Most indie movies are forged from passion for the art or are passionate about what the movie is about so you have directors putting their heart into it, while hollywood pimps a franchise for the money.
Maybe someone educated in film that would pour his soul into the movie should handle it. Just my two cents.

I am currently in the process of filming a Live-Action short of Sonic The Hedgehog.
I've already caught a Hedgehog and Fox, grafted a second tail on the fox with a stappler, ripped off the hands of my sister's Minnie Mouse plushies and stuck them on the Hedgehog and Fox's front paws and have stuck a red moustache on an egg.
Unfortunately, I have already exceeded my budget and the bank won't let me have anymore money. I am looking for someone to donate $5 for blue spraypaint so I can start shooting tomorrow morning and finish at lunch

I think Halo fans need to adopted the moniker: Fanhalos.
Pronounced like Fanilow for Barry Manilow fans.

I wish all this time, effort and heart went into original works instead of existing properties with tricky copyright issues. I feel like the trend of fan made movies is dishonest. It's so much easier to make something that people are already predisposed to want than to come up with something new and have to create the need within others.

This movie doesn't have Master Chief.
Operation Chastity takes place right after the Halo rings are blown up. It focuses on a group of marines who need to survive a mere 5 days for the war to be over, but this is exactly where the action begins.

Well assuming everyone is simply donating their free time, including volunteers to edit, do special FX, etc, $50,000, even half that, could go a long ways.
Labor is the real killer when it comes to costs, spray-painting wooden guns is pretty cheap. Their Warthog looks pretty far along and I'd imagine it's probably the most major prop.
The real issue facing a production like this is fatigue - without a set budget/contracts for completion, they'll get 80% of it filmed before people get tired, then the final 20% will take forever, ironically as seen with Peter Jackson's own "Bad Taste".

Reply fail! Gee, who would have thought you were lacking the brain cells....
Tell ya what. Look up "Batman:Dead End", it's another fan made short, from about 5 years ago, that was made for $10k, and tell me you can't have special effects-since they managed not only to do a proper looking Batman flick, but have Aliens and Predators in it too. Sure, it's crap, but it is another fine example of "shut your stupid mouth because you don't know what you think you're talking about".

"Sure, it's crap....." so the fact that it was crap matters not to you right? ok i'm wrong, you're right, most halo fans are too blind by the own fanaticism that anything that has halo splashed over it would be hailed as an excellent piece of film making..

Just did an interview with the guy behind Operation Chastity and also got some great art work from the film they are proposing on making. Looks fantastic: http://www.wired.co.uk/photos/wired-things/2009-08/01/operation-chastity---the-halo-fan-film.aspx
