ACTUALLY the plan for the UMD conversion was the user would send in their game (UMD and all) to a center, Sony would process it and you'd get a download code for your game. That option alone would have been enough for me to upgrade to the PSP Go but they waited until launch to change their mind on it.

If they ever do a PS3 app store, I want a video transcoding program to run on Cell, because it apparantly is crazy fast with video transcoding.

That would be my #1 most used app.

Mr Eric Lempel, why have you blocked honest customers from reselling their psp go games blocked people from selling their psp go's with games installed, trading their games with friends, lending their games to friends or even giving their games away for free?

"well its like this, you all have to purchase new titles only, as sony are sick of you freetards lending games to your friends, and selling them for as little as $5 which we dont even make a cent from!" Eric Lempel

so what you re saying Mr Lempel is that sony want to force everyone to bend over lube up & take a big one up the arse because now they dont own their games?

"thats correct, now turn around" Eric Lempel

No. Sony killed Sega twice in a row; the second time being the nail in the coffin.

I wonder how many of the people all pissed because you can't resell or loan digital only games are rocking an Ipod/Iphone and have spent a fortune on the app store?

Most of them are just pissed because they will have trouble pirating games now. Boo friggin hoo.

I'll admit, I'm no software engineer, but it would have been a difficult process to create a UMD program that did not involve potential shifty activity.

- If users just needed a UPC code from the game's box, that would be an issue because of the ability to resell.

- If users needed to have a UMD connected to the PC through the PSP that would be a problem for users who only own a PSPGo.

There are several other concerns, and Sony backed themselves into a corner with this one. The worse part about it is the price of the hardware. $250 is crazy in today's market. The smart thing for Sony to do would have been to create new contracts with publishers and revitalize the PSP software base. Next year they could have rolled out the PSPGo at a cheaper price and a new potential fanbase.

Maybe they could do what Steam does for a lot of games...allow retail copies to be registered through Steam (By inputting the CD key), and that way the game is registered to your account and your account only. There's some sort of complicated process to unregister it from your account I believe, say, if you want to give the retail copy away to a friend or something.

This is the general direction that Sony wants to move towards. The problem is that the pirate community on the PSP isn't being cooperative with Sony with regards to the PSP.

As for the CD Key thing, I am not aware of UMD games having a serial number of their own to determine their production number. However, UMD games do have game IDs of their own (i.e. Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero? has the ID ULUS-10414).

I still think it's possible to do some sort of UMD rental implementation that will work for both Sony and consumers with lots of UMDs. Sony is never going to let people have a free digital copy if they have a UMD. From a technological standpoint it's impossible for them to know if you've rented it, or borrowed it from someone.

Since Sony has already hinted about a game rental service why not use that as the UMD good will program? You stick the UMD game in your UMD psp, and it credits your account with a 3 day rental of the digital version. You have the minor inconvenience of having to keep around your old psp just to check out games, but it prevents casual piracy and is something I think most people wouldn't find too obtrusive.

@Mike:
I think the biggest problem at the moment is that the UMDs don't really have a serial number of their own. There are game identifiers, yes, but there are no production identifiers. At least, not that I know of.

@mahouneko:

Well that's the point of the rental idea. You don't care about unique UMD identification. If someone can have access to a physical copy of the UMD every 3 days to re-authenticate their "rental" then it's safe to assume they own the game. Yes, there will be some cases in which people will beat the system by borrowing a game every 3 days, but it prevents most people from sharing games.

That's true, but you'd still have a retail "rental" system to worry about. I personally think that UMD conversion programs would need to start with an identifier for the UMDs themselves so that people who want to keep their UMDs and have a digital copy would have no way of wiggling out of an account-locked game. I mean account-locked as in the way that Valve locks games to user accounts.

The problem with the model I just described is that there's no real way for Sony to check on the license unless the user connects the PSP to the MediaGo or goes online on their PSP.

Either way, it's a logistical and legal nightmare that Sony is still in the middle of mediating with the other publishers. Good example to look at is Square-Enix and how they've been fighting against piracy on the DS: by crippling the game at certain points or by forcing your game save to be corrupted/deleted towards the very end of the game.

In that sense, there is quite a lot of publisher angst to contend with especially regarding how security of their digital IP will be handled.

I"m still a little pissed that mac support isn't here, and they are only "looking into it" they've been doing that for two or three years now about making software for mac. its really pissing me off how sony is so mean to us, even though owning a mac in my perspective basically requires a person to own a gaming console since macs don't game well (they don't, i will not lie). I'm a customer, and i deserve to be given the same treatment as PC buyers, and its not like you guys are going to lose money on this! developing a program for mac is surely not that difficult for one of the largest hardware and software companies in the world.

wow so much hate for the pspgo it's silly Sony still supports all psp models. It's funny that people love umds so much now, those things break with ease just removing it from the case could break it. Finally there is another option out there, and if you still want the disk they are still being made. The Go is a nice step forward but it's not for everybody .... I'm enjoying it got me interested in the psp again.

Initially I was bummed that the Go couldn't use my UMDs. But really, I'm not exactly left out in the cold with my 2000. PSN games work, minis work *shrug* I'm quite alright sticking with the 2000. Had they pulled a Nintendo and made the minis not work, then I'd be as irritated as I am with Nintendo.

I'm still not very happy that you will have to purchase all your games again just after paying $250. Understand where Sony's coming from, but I wouldn't take it as a sleazy excuse if the Go were cheaper.

Okay... so it takes a lot of people to make one umd, and a lot of money. So after manufacturing costs, shipping costs, and the costs to stock yer games at a store what are we left with? 39.99/29.99 for each umd, right? So...................... let's THINK for a minute... Why would I pay that for a download only game that has NONE of these costs associated with it, and where does that money go? Hmph. I'm just super stumped here...
