Halo Legends Blu-ray dated Feb. 9, 2010; perfect fanboy storm approaches

A year ago, the following sentence would have been absolutely, totally, and in all other ways inconceivable: The Blu-ray edition of the Halo Legends anime project is scheduled for release on February 9, 2010. The impossible union of Halo and Blu-ray will not only arrive on the same day as the DVD release, but it will also contain an exclusive overview of the series through the events of Halo 3. As Blu-ray.com risibly puts it, "Soon you'll be able to play Halo on your PS3."

Now, we'd like to think that this generation of consoles is far enough along that this news won't ruffle any fanboy feathers. Then again, we'd also like to think that HD DVD, in all its awesomeness, is poised for a comeback. Just remember, Halo fans, Blu-ray discs are not your enemy. Cliffhangers are.

And at the beginning of this generation, did anyone expect to see Tekken, Metal Gear, Devil May Cry, or Final Fantasy games on a Microsoft console?

You first admit you don't know how its quality stacks up against other Blu Ray players, then you state that its quality lacks against other Blu Ray players. You can't even troll well - here, I'll fix this to be a proper 12-year old's troll:

The "big deal" is that Blu-ray is Sony's format that they created and championed and the PS3 is its main product.

Well, that certainly is surprising. I wonder how many Halo fanboys will buy the PS3 for the blu-ray player just to watch this in its best quality.

That's probably because PS3 users are actually engaged in their systems at the moment while 360 users got nothing but multi-platform titles.

Plus all the good multiplatformers like Brutal Legend, Dragon Age, FIFA 10, Borderlands...

Then you have a few titles that are late to the party on PS3 finally getting there like all the DLC for Fallout 3 (which basically makes another game) and Castle Crashers. PS3 users are not without entertainment at the moment, I tell you that.

360'ers are waiting for MW2, L4D2 and AC2 off the top of my head.

I think it's more the fact that Halo, an extremely Microsoft franchise, is going to touch blu-ray, an extremely Sony product.

What most people don't realize is that while Sony and Microsoft may stand at odds in one market, in another they may rely on each other for sales. Microsoft also makes Windows, just like Sony also makes hardware for Windows based PCs.

If you only see them as two rival companies duking it out for control of the console market, then this is like Microsoft making a concession to Sony. That is something I'm sure most fanboys would see as a sign of weakness.

You'd have to be blind to see this as a bad move on Microsoft's part though.

everyone in the halo world ,had the same thought . but then the dollar sign showed up .bam halo on dvd & blu-ray .

since you guys know so much about blu ray players, do you know how to get rid of the omnipresent black extras bar in the top left corner of almost every movie?

All of my Blu-Ray movies have no extras.

All of my HD-DVD movies have all of the extras.

For a medium that is has 33% more storage capacity....WTF is up with that?

HD-DVD and Blu-Ray movies look great on my 1080p TV and sound even better played through my badass Pioneer VSX81 Elite receiver with Definitive Technology Monitors and 12" Klipsch Subwoofer.

Blu-Ray movies are not played on a PS3....

So The Blu-Ray games i am currently playing on my PS3 is all in my head....

All....no, no, no, my bad. I meant that MY Blu-Ray movies are not played on a PS3. Don't think I am that stupid for thinking that a PS3 does not play Blu-Ray movies.

I got a sweet deal on a Blu-Ray player ($150) and then six months later they finally dropped the PS3 to the price point I was waiting for. (My Blu-Ray player was raised back to $250 one month after I bought it)

I am getting one (a PS3) this Christmas from the girlfriend. I already have Uncharted and Uncharted 2 on the my list of games I will be getting.

BTW, does anyone suggest I tell her to wait and try to find a bundle with a game that I want.......doesn't Sony usually offer the console plus a game at the same price for a short time.

what do you mean? BR players can play DVD´s to you know. HDdvd is the least consumer frendly as its just a DVD with HD and a blueray is a dvd that is HD and has a ton of space in it.

I think you were replying to me. I didn't realize how what I wrote was going to come across.

An HD-DVD is not just a DVD with more storage. The HD-DVD used a laser in the red spectrum (Blu-Ray uses a laser in the blue spectrum). All three are at completely different wave lengths. They are made differently and are stored on a different medium. You couldn't play an HD-DVD on a DVD player.

When the format wars had just started, I did research and came to the conclusion that HD-DVD was better. They had better software already in place. Blu-Ray was better in higher storage capacity.

I also later found out that they say it is harder to scratch a Blu-Ray disc to the point it would be inoperable. I bought some new HD-DVDs that didn't play right out of the packaging...not sure why, but it seems that they were not as well made or something.

Blu-Ray caught up to HD-DVD with the performance eventually, about 1.5 years later, with the picture in picture commentary and stuff like that.

They both output HD audio and video; Blu-Ray had more storage and a sturdier disc and I think that is why they won (plus Best Buy backed them).

Not too ironic, i suppose.

Did it actually turn out to be a good anime, though?

All I can say is that the PS3's Blu Ray player is better than the 360's :)

Unfortunately I don't own a PS3 or Blu-Ray player, but as soon as I do I will definitely pick this up on Blu-Ray. Until then I'll have to settle for the HD download copy from XBL.

A lot of people are saying they'll just download the HD version off of Live...

Why bother? It costs $9 and change to just rent an HD movie from live (here in canada) AND the quality is still not nearly as good as blu-ray. Those HD files from LIVE are usually around 4-6 gigs and the movie file on a blu-ray disc can weigh in at around 20 gigs.

The blu-ray discs are obviously carrying much better video and audio files.

You have to be a real sucker to be renting movies from Live. Do yourself a favor and just go to your local video store!!!

As a PS3 owner, I'd prefer it if you'd stop trying to incite a flame war. If the 360 fans want to have fun with our games, they're welcome to join the PS3 club... so long as they leave behind the potty mouthed immaturity at the door.

Also, Trine is multiplatform. It's been out on the PC for a while now and I think will show up on XBL. I don't remember off the top of my head because it's been a few months since I last read the Trine article.

So Sony appears single handedly owns the Blu-Ray..? I thought they make the same impression out of DVD on PS2. But XBOX had DVD and no one thought that's a failure on MS's side.

Blu-Ray was created by Sony, like CD's, and I don't even really want to mention them, but "memory stick", and UMD too. So in a big way Blu Ray is assosciated with Sony.

So technically, we'll be able to play something related to Halo on our PS3. Huh.
