It seems Sony is attempting to drum up interest in Team Ico's upcoming, Griffin-infused adventure, The Last Guardian, by showcasing its earlier opus to poor, unenlightened folks who missed it the first time around. The opus in question is Shadow of the Colossus, which, according to a Team ICO fan site, has been listed by a number of Japanese retailers to be reprinted and sold on February 4. Sadly, it didn't get the God of War Collection treatment -- the game's still on its original platform, the PlayStation 2.
If you were the speculatin' type, you might think that The Last Guardian would be released not too much later than this reprint, ensuring that the warm, Team ICO-esque feeling would still be fresh in everyone's minds. We're more the wait-and-see types, so we plan on waiting and, shortly after that, seeing.

I'd prefer a reprint of ICO with better boxart.
also, 60GB PS3 is superior to all other versions.

My 160GB edition says you're wrong. Know why?
Because it's got Nate The Goddamn Drake on the front!

Hardware is overrated. The software emulation works just as well.

Give us the Japanese boxart for ICO, please. The American cover was ugly and horrible and completely missed the point of what sort of game it is. It easily falls into the category of the worst game covers ever. The Japanese cover is MUCH better, as one of the best box arts ever.

i wish they'd reprint Ico in america. It's almost impossible to find at a reasonable price now.

Hope they release it in the cardboard box, with the art cards and making of footage. like they did with the intial PAL release.

I realize I will not only be downvoted for this, but most likely banned from Joystiq and possibly incarcerated for saying this, but I really didn't see what was so great about Shadow of the Colossus.
I found SotC's controls to be clunky (steering a horse and shooting was way to difficult), the framerate was all over the place, plus I felt the novelty of fighting nothing but bosses wore off pretty quick. imo, it really had nothing on Ico, which is a pretty great game.

How someone could think Ico is superior to SotC is beyond me...
But to each their own.
Also, SotC is a prequel to Ico. If you missed the reference at the end of SotC, then there's no helping you.
I won't down vote you though, since it's you're honest opinion. Instead I'll vote up.

Eh, we all have different tastes in games so you shouldn't be lynched for disliking Shadow of the Colossus.
They should remaster these games just like the God of War series, I'm sure they'll end up pulling quite a lot of money and it will satisfy the mass fanbase. Everyone wins!.

Oh yeah, I did catch that reference - which was pretty sweet.
Overall, I felt that Ico did a better job of playing with light vs. dark, plus I preferred how the gameplay of Ico was more focused on the relationship of a boy and a girl, rather than man vs. beast (although, admittedly, that was for the man and woman relationship). I did love the environment and atmosphere of both, but, personally, I preferred the lonely feeling of the castle vs. the lonely feeling of the fields.
In some ways, I think the PS2 wasn't powerful enough to really capture the vision that SotC was going for. I can't quite place my finger on it, but I think the wide open areas of SotC could have been done much more effectively on a more powerful system.
However, I'll admit, in both games, I would like to have had both games tell a bit more of the story. I realize the angle they're going for is for the player to fill in the blanks, but I think both were hands off to the point where the impact they had on me weren't to both games full potential.

For the record on horse controls, they were intentionally a little off. You're riding a horse, not a car. The controls aren't going to be 100% responsive because real horses aren't always 100% responsive. And if you get all twisted around, just remember on the horse that Left and Right are always Left and Right, no matter the camera orientation. The game developers went and rode some horses a bit just to get the horse riding right.
So the horse riding was awkward, but it was also realistic.

I finished Ico and SotC for the first time in the last year.
I have to say I don't hate them, but they are overrated. Ico is near impossible to figure out without a FAQ. And SotC has such huge frame rate problems it's a real drag. You can say the lack of controls responsiveness is because you're on a horse, but the real answer is the game just runs slow. Which is weird, because the graphics are poor too, the textures look like a PS1 game.
SotC would be much improved by a PS3 remaster. A faster frame rate would improve responsiveness and make a huge difference.

A PS2 reprint for the generation that doesn't have a backwards compatible PS3? I guess Sony just wants to sell more PS2's.

Shadow Of the Colossus is my all time favorite game ever. I love playing that game no matter how many times. I wish this was an HD remix though because I already have the game and wouldn't mind an upgrade to hold me off until The Last Guardian comes out.

Seriously, I wouldn't mind spending $40 on HD versions of 2 or 3 PS2 games in a series that have aged well, this being one of them. Hell, Ratchet & Clank, Going Commando, and Up Your Arsenal in 720p at 60fps with anti-aliasing and trophies (and maybe a couple of gameplay tweaks)? That'd easily be worth $40, especially when Xbox Originals cost $15 a piece and don't have any upgrades in any way shape or form what so ever.
As as aside, since all three titles came out before the first GOW was ever released, I don't think it's unreasonable to charge $40 for all three games compared to the GOW Collection which was just two. It's also worth noting that GOW I & II are both $15-$20 still while the R&C titles aren't.

I'd pay for for those 3 together. Put all 3 Sly Cooper games together (and fix the camera on #1) and I'd buy that too.

Agreed. Jax & Daxter is another serious that could use a re-release. Much like Ratchet: Deadlocked, just ditch Jax X cause nobody really liked either of those games, lol. Honestly, I have no problem paying a premium for upgraded content. Ports on the other hand gotta be dirt cheap or I wont buy em.
It's the same reason why I've bought PS1 Classics for $6 and wouldn't buy N64 games from VC cause they're $10 a piece. Maybe that's justifiable for Ocarina of Time, but literally no other N64 game is worth $10 under any circumstances. Just like Original Xbox games aren't worth $15.

I picked up the GOW collection the other day and while playing it I started thinking about Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. How nice it would've been for them to get the GOW collection treatment. I think those games might do well all spruced up for PS3, I would've picked them up.

Since when has the PS2 been terrible? I'd get PS3 hate a little, but the PS2 was the best console of the last generation.KotOR and Windwaker aside, all my favorite games of the last generation were on PS2.

I saw the PS2 last generation as the console that was lagging behind. It was the only console that had only two controllers instead of four, and you had to buy an add on if you actually had more than one friend to play with. And that only worked in some games. I'm going to be downvoted for this because people love it, but I also thought (and still think) that the dualshock controller was/is outdated. Sony is the only console maker that doesn't put the left analog stick front and center where it belongs. The controls in most games have you using the left analog stick and the face buttons more than anything else, shouldn't the analog stick be level with the face buttons, in the most comfortable position? It made sense when they added the analog sticks to the PS1 controller since most games still didn't support analog control, but now that it's the main way you interact with your games it needs to be right under your thumb instead of off to the side.
That said, the PS2 had some great games, so it doesn't really matter.
