PS3's Torne could give you Trophies for watching TV
91
Surely, you deserve some award for sitting through a season, nay, an episode, of Heroes. Torne, a new DVR service for Japanese PS3s, may do just that. A new report in Famitsu (via 1UP) suggests that Torne will offer viewers Trophies. "It's compatible with the PS3 trophy system, and you can get trophies for things like watching final episodes from a lot of TV series, for example," SCE's Kiyoto Shibuya told the magazine. Being able to unlock Trophies should make the Sony's DVR offering a "uniquely PlayStation product."
We've already brainstormed a few possible Trophy selections. How about a Gold "Otaku" Trophy for watching all 366 (and counting) episodes of Naruto? Here's an idea that could save network TV: a Bronze Trophy every time you refuse to hit fast-forward through the commercials?

How about a crap pile trophy coupled with a permaban for watching over 20 hours* of anime in a single day?
Yes, I'm talking about you, Naruto fans.
*The rest of the time they're masturbating thinking of Naruko

I would gladly sacrifice any would-be trophies to not have to have my eyes raped by ads every few minutes.

I would get the trophy as well. Don't feel bad, though. If you enjoy a certain show/hobby, and it isn't detrimental to you or anyone else, how can it be bad?
Note: I said as long is it isn't detrimental to you or anyone else. Wanted to reiterate that before people came in with ridiculous examples of bad hobbies. Though they still will anyways.

Wow, way to compromise the integrity and meaning of your achievement system, Sony.
Giving people achievements for sitting on their ass and watching television? The idea of trophies and gamerpoints, is that you typically have to achieve something to get them.

You deserve an award for continuing to watch Heroes after the first season... or an unmerciful death if you are enjoying it.

Let's trade. PS3 can keep the trophies for watching tv and just give me back hulu. We'll call it square.

Seriously, you guys don't know how good you've got it over there, especially on your consoles (at least we have PlayTV on PS3, BBC iPlayer on PS3 & Wii and Sky Player & BT Vision on 360 I suppose, but gaming-wise we are the once who get shafted time and time again)

What happened to Heroes?
I watched the first season, and it was pretty cool. And back then everyone was raving about it.
Then I moved overseas, and I couldn't watch the other seasons.
When did it get bad? Should I watch season 2, or just leave it at season 1?

While it likely would mean each show (or channel) would have it's own trophies...I could see this working if they instead set it up to be for the overall service.
For example: You build a profile of your favorite shows, networks, or genres, and from there it determines how your trophies are set up.
So while one user may have "Watch 3 different animated series in a week", another may have "Watch 3 different dramas in a week". Meanwhile both people have the challenge to "Watch both the season premier and season finale of your favorite show" (with the favorite being selected by the user themselves)
And then depending on what you don't like, they may have the one "tough" trophy being related to stepping outside your typical viewing tastes.
If they can keep it generic/tailored in that manner, it may be a pretty fun bonus that doesn't make people feel like they're being pushed to watch more TV than they actually want to.

Am I the only one who thinks trophies are the most useless thing ever? I have yet to get excited about a trophy.

No, but a lot of us got sucked in because we were there when they became part of our gaming. I want to lose interest in the trophies... There is no way ANYONE will catch up to number 1 when Hakoom is playing 10 hours a day and only doing it for trophies anyway. personally, if Sony removed the trophy system, I really wouldnt miss it. Despite what I said in a previous post, trophies have all but ruined gaming for me, and I would be happier with my gaming if we never got those damn things.

this news makes the knowledge that PS3 users in the USA will never see this product, hurt THAT much more.

Wait... what? Why would this be a good thing? I'm not saying TV is bad, there are many great shows out there. But it takes no skill, practice, patience, etc. to watch TV. If this comes out, and people get tons of trophies just for watching TV, how does that justify gamers who work really hard to get gold and platinum trophies?
I hope that these tv trophies will at least only award bronze trophies...
