@Granger
But there's still a way to get old saves and profiles onto new HDD, right? I mean, I'd be pretty pissed if I lost my gamerscore and saves when upgrading to a new HDD.

Yeah, you have to buy the proprietary 14 dollar HDD transfer cable.

Something in my reply wasn't allowed or something, hope I haven't been banned...

120GB HDDs came with a transfer cable that you hooked to the highpowered USB port on the back of the 360. It took about an hour and a half to transfer a full 20GB HDD to it, and it wipes the old HDD of all data. I don't know if they still come with them, or if the 60GB HDD comes with a cable either. I know when you upgraded to an Elite you could get a free transfer cable (had to have an HDD model console registered and register your new Elite), but I don't know if they still do that.

If you want to transfer selected data you have to use a 360 Memory Unit.

120GB units have mostly disappeared from the retail channels. The 60GB HDD pack was targeted as a 'Arcade upgrade', and so didn't come with the cable. And Microsoft no longer provides the cable for free, even when you upgrade to an Elite.

I've been using one of those 64mg memory units to do the transfer since we got an elite...and let me say that it blows big time! (BTW Broken, your gamer score is also online, so as long as you have signed into live, it has been uploaded. It won't be wiped out.)

I only install games that I'm currently playing, and then delete them when I'm finished. I'm playing through Mass Effect 2, and I have the first disc installed but I will delete it when I get to the second disc.

Yea, because a 2.5" SATA HDD in a 250GB capacity isn't sold for $50 on most major online retailers or anything. >_>

well, if you want to involve logic.

You're also paying for the board that communicates with the xbox.
The casing
and recouping cost on man hours and other business costs from developing the hardware, and running the factory to produce and assemble and test all of these.

Yeah you can just buy an HDD and put it into your existing case, or buy one off dealextreme for $10. Comes out to be $60.
How is MS justifying $180? Thats more than THREE times what it costs them (probably cheaper since they buy it in bulk).

@ Cheesus Crust

You can crack open a 360 hard drive case and swap a regular ol' 2.5 incher in there?

If you know of a good how-two guide I'd appreciate sending it my way. I know it's more then simply buying a stock drive and swapping it in since there's quite a bit of system data on every 360 hard drive.

250gb hard drives will soon be the standard for 360 and PS3, and 500gb will be the premium. Meanwhile, the Wii will maintain its 512mb Flash.

I actually made my own 250gb hdd about one month ago. It's not very hard guys, just a little scary to anyone who's convinced opening their pc will cause it to explode, catch on fire, break, or electrocute them.

I even upped the speed to 7200rpm so install games load noticeable faster (Mass Effect 2, I'm looking at you.)

Total cost? A little over $60 which includes shipping to Worcester MA

They only ban fake memory cards not HDDs, you just need the right firmware on there though.

Microsoft would make an even bigger profit off these new HDDs if they just sold them bundled with the transfer cable for about $80. That's a perfect price point for high school and college students to pay/get their parents to pay for, plus it's not too bad for the person doing the 9 to 5 during the week.

They can justify the cost because people will pay for it. They may complain about it, but they will pay for it. If Microsoft continues to make a profit from selling them, then why should they care?

Also, I need a new HDD. I'm just about done with 20 gig :-(.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet but seriously, look on eBay. There are sellers in China who are selling HDDs for a *lot* cheaper than you'd get it at a store. That's how I got my 250gb HDD and it's working perfectly.

What the friggin chicken!? How the heck are they releasing a 250GB hard drive in the land of the rising sun before USA? Japan does not give a shit about Xbox 360. Gamestores are offering low as prices for 360's because they are piling up and no one wants them. They think a $170 hard drive is gonna sell there... LMAO what a joke.

This just in, Microsoft thinks horrendous sales with drive hard drive sales due to the fact the system itself is almost non existent in Japan. I dont get it seriously!
