Due to a glitch in Bioshock 1, my game would freeze right before the last boss fight.. but it was a good game, just not a game I need to revisit. Like others have said, it was a complete game.

"Due to a glitch in Bioshock 1, my game would freeze right before the last boss fight."

That's a blessing in disguise -- said boss fight is universally considered the biggest cloud of stink in an otherwise phenomenal game. It was like a boss fight out of Devil May Cry or something; totally out of place.

I wonder if gaming blogs had been prevalent in '94 if people would have been as outspokenly against a sequel to System Shock as they are to this. And if so, if we'd ever have gotten Bioshock.

I've never seen so many people, leading up to a release, try so hard to be uninterested in a sequel that seems to be a pretty damn good game on its own, regardless of its legacy.

Would you kindly give it a chance, at the very least, BEFORE you try convincing people how unnecessary it is?

I got a chance to play the game for 2 hours, and so far I completely agree with Justin. It feels almost too much like the first in every respect. Hopefully the story will grab me.

I never knew Justin had so much to say [compared to his previous reviews].

I also forgive the fact that the mechanics won't be astoundingly different. I am, however, disappointed that the "picking up stuff requires a button" mechanic. It's probably meant to keep things a little more frantic, but it's an artificial frantic much like bad, antiquated RE controls.

Can't wait to grab this, there's been enough positive words about it to guarantee it's not a trainwreck, which is what most of us probably thought it was going to be.

It was annoying in the first game having to pick up everything with a button press, but what's the alternative? Automatically picking-up/using everything you walk over or next to? Because it would get old very quickly having to sidestep bottles of alcohol and whatnot in the middle of a firefight to avoid the effects you might not necessarily want at that moment. Imagine the shootout in the bar area in the first game... yikes.

Borderlands lets you pick up all the ammo/cash in the area by looking at one piece and holding the "gather loot" button for a second. I imagine this would work, since booze and cigarettes aren't typically dropped from battle in Bioshock.

IMO Bioshock was one of the most overrated games I have played. It felt so repetitive. It was still an enjoyable game, but to me it was nothing special.
No reason to buy the second one, thats for sure

I was interested in this when it was first announce... but as time went on, I thought the same - BioShock didn't need a sequel.

And, where BS2 has you playing the role of a Big Daddy, yet doing the same things as Jack, has no Ken Levine present annnd decided to tack on multiplayer, it seems more like the type of game you pick up on sale, rather than a first day must-buy.

Still looks great and I'm sure it plays just the same, but it just feels like same stuff, different day. Go along, get pointed in the right direction, occasionally harvest/save Little Sister, all in an attempt to stop someone you THINK is doing wrong... all in an environment you've already traversed before - so, nothing new. With that first trailer for BS2: Sea of Dreams, I had almost hoped that somehow Rapture was rising from the depths to the surface and $#@! was gonna hit the fan with escaping, crazed splicers as you played as an ordinary citizen fighting the invasion amidst the confusion and chaos of organized by Big Sisters and carried out by Daddies - just a thought.

But with BioShock 2, there's almost seems to be no wonder, no mystery, no sense of abandonment like you got with Jack... and that's what made Rapture a thrill to explore.

The original Bioshock was the most over rated game ever (at that time in history). And I was really looking forward to it as I loved System Shock 2.

I also gave up playing about 2/3s through as it simply got boring and had a horrible feel of 'no fun'. Lazy gameplay mechanics, poor gunplay, bad enemies, overblown 'story led' design all contributed to make it a game that needed another year or so spent on it's development.

It was a cool idea, I loved the premise of Rapture and some of the graphics were nice enough but overall the game felt shabby, unfinished and tedious. I'm talking mainly about the poor PC port and it's bugs/lack of proper widescreen on release etc.

It would take some major memory loss for me to pay to play anything even 'close' to that game again. I still feel bummed now about how disappointing it was after the entire industry praised it as a paradigm shift in gaming. (*cough* *Payola*)

I played it, loved the first, but this one feels like your over powered and yet at the same time limited. It is good don't get me wrong, but to me it was like walking into tim burtons remake of charlie and the chocolate factory. It looks beautiful, but we really came here for the story, and while they have contributed to the story, a little piece of you says it was unnecessary because the charm is gone. Like some previous comments have said, you will get the most out of this game if you are a newcomer.

2K if you are listening, make Sealab 2021 the video game. Include some Bioshock cameos and it'd be Bizarro!

The feeling of being exactly like Jack again, the same environment, the same....everything. Disappointing....

I got it in the four pack, and at that price, I couldn't be happier.

I got as far as the first achievement before realising playing it with my right arm in a cast ain't gonna work for frantic combat.

I was mostly expecting this game to receive mixed reviews. The fact that five development studios contributed to the making-of BioShock 2 is a pretty ill omen if you ask me. I did love the first BioShock, however, and am somewhat intrigued about the whole "twist" during the last two hours of the game, although I am not really sure I want to venture into Rapture for a bland 10+ hours just to get to it. Might just have to rent this one.

On topic with the review: I think Dead Space is another one of those titles that does NOT need a sequel, but here comes EA big bucks with their sequelitis + useless multiplayer mode afterthought. Bleh.

exactly. I am really enjoying this game, and so far the story has me wanting to know more. Did it need to be made? no. Is it a good addition to the bioshock mythology and have a worthwhile story? yes. I'm having a lot of fun with the multiplayer as well- setting traps, hacking turrets, and using plasmids is a great addition to deathmatch.

I have played it for close to 4 hours and I have enjoyed it. Its a fun and different perspective playing as a big daddy. Yet your big daddy character is definitely vulnerable to any and all enemy attacks. anyone that has enjoyed the original bioshock will enjoy

Unfortunately this is what happens to all devote gaming companies, they get taken advantage of by Corporate giants that are more interested in making money rather than making good games.

This same fate happen to Blizzard.

From a pragmatic point of view, it's a good move to release a sequel to Bioshock. The gaming industry needs hits, and sequels to hits has a track record of paying dividends. Personally, the FPS genre is so pervasive that it makes me feel like I am playing the same game in a different suit, so to speak. That said, it was a very engaging, dark story, and a horribly claustrophobic environment. But the ubiquitous gameplay mechanics inherent in a FPS just don't do it for me. I only played through half of the first one, with my friend completing it thereafter. FPS's need something different to set themselves apart from all the others. I'd like to see one where you play as a germ in a human body, ala Inner Space.

Very unhappy that the vending machines don't say anything any more... I miss the "♪ Welcome to the Circus of Value! ♫"

Overall.. very happy with the game thus far. Just got my fire plasmid and I do like the new hacking bar. Never liked the pipes that you had to link together.

For most, I believe, this game will go over well. But, nothing will compare to the 1st time in Rapture.

One of my favorite new things about Bioshock 2 is the upgrades to the melee combat. Instead of having to manually switch over to the stupid pipe, you can just hit the B button and melee anytime, like on Halo. There are plenty of cool plasmid/gun/melee combos that weren't really possible before.

I have to disagree. The new hacking mini-game is not better than the pipe-swapping. And most of the game is not on par or better than the first one. You are off your rocker if you think that. As for the story, I thought it was a bunch shittier than the first one. It made no sense at first and really only did towards the end when you hit the final two stages. Also, what's with people got shot in the head and surviving in games now? This game did it and it happens in the new Army of Two too.

I seem to be the only person that was disappointed with the game. I loved the pipe-swapping. I was amazing at it. And alright maybe I was alittle wrong when I said it wasn't on par. Cause honestly, it's pretty much an expansion pack. But I definitely think the story was not that great. For the first few levels I was annoyed that the guy survived a shot to the head. And then the build-up from the story not making sense at first took over and carried through til I hit Gil, then I started understanding it more. The game did have it's emotional moments though. Like I definitely didn't kill Grace cause I wanted to show her I wasn't a monster, but I kinda did wanna kill her at the same time. And Stan? Shit he got rocket speared. And when I realized I needed more Adam or I'd get my shit rocked, I did kinda feel bad for harvesting a sister. So the game definitely had a few moments, but I was an extreme advocate of the first one so I kinda denied the sequel at first and from the start kinda thought it would disappoint. The first one was absolutely amazing to me. The story, the controls, the environment, everything. That's partly why I'm not understanding what people are saying about this one fixing some of the issues with the first one. I didn't see any issues with it. I am biased though and I realize that. I guess had this been it's own game, I probably wouldn't have been disappointed.

The game also felt alot more linear to me than the first one. Plus I missed the funniness of 'Gracias senor' from the Ammo Bandito. Mostly cause he said it in such a white way. And 'Come back when you get some money, buddy'.

Well I can't change your opinion but for me Bioshock 2 was a 10 out of 10. To each his own then. And i was really good at the pipe swapping too, but still it began to become a nuisance after so many times doing it.

I have to agree, the first two thirds were a bit hard on me. Boring storytelling, mostly due to it being repetitive (reveal character, do as he says, choose good or evil, move on to next chapter, repeat). However, they spiced up the last third enough to make it more than worth it.
