According to a report in the New York Times, Sony will announce today that PS3 users will gain access to live streams of Major League Baseball games. By week's end the console will enable subscriptions to the MLB.TV service, which provides access to out-of-market contests, but not local games or others that are broadcast on TV.
The NYT doesn't have the scoop on pricing, but a web subscription to the service will run you between $100 and $120 annually, or $20 to $25 per month, depending on the features. Count on more details when the official announcement drops. Sony has been considering new subscription services for PSN since the end of last year.
Update: Here's the official release, though it doesn't have much new info. The PS3 app will be free, according to PlayStation Blog, but it requires an MLB.TV subscription to stream games.
[Thanks, Ryan G.]

Wow. This announcement came out of left field.
See what I did there?
Seriously, as a baseball fan who owns an 360 and a Wii but not a PS3, I am jealous of this. I am a U-verse subscriber, and I love U-verse except for the lack of Extra Innings.

The only thing I still have the basic cable hooked up for is to watch the braves, i would use a service like MLB.tv for my iPhone and iPad, but since i cant watch the games in my area there is no point
Please remove the blackout and i will pay again!
On topic. I am glad this is coming to the ps3, another great feature for a great system

Its less than a dollar a game, I can't get NESN, and I can't get the TV package because of Direct's exclusive deal. Sign me up!

I guess if it broadcasts in HD that would be cool, but otherwise I don't really see the use for this. If it would work on PSP, that might convince me a bit more towards getting one.

On the PSBlog they posted this it has the pricing on it:
You must be an MLB.TV subscriber to fully utilize this app (some features, such as the calendar schedule, are available to everyone for free). There are two annual packages: MLB.TV is $99.95 and MLB.TV Premium is $119.95. If you aren’t already a MLB.TV subscriber. The site to sign up will go live later today. Once you’ve subscribed, link your MLB.TV subscription to a PS3 (via the app), and enjoy the season!

This is good news, I have MLB.TV for my Mac and My iPhone so I can watch the Red Sox since I no longer live in Beantown. It will be nice to add it to my PS3 now, good move Sony! Albeit I am surprised MS didn't make a play for this, seems like a feature the 360 would have over the PS3. Either way I am stoked, just hope it doesn't take too much PS3 game time away....

The sport has to be popular for you to like it? Wow, thats deep...
I'm not a big baseball fan either but this seems really cool and I'd love to see the feature come to other disciplines.

This is pretty awesome and sets a great precedent - instead of purchasing a "Season Pass" from the cable company, we can buy one for the internet and run it across our computers, smart phones, and now a game system.
A lot of us do not live where our teams play, so...about time! It's a good day for all sports fans, just that baseball fans get the goods first.

The iPhone app is nice because they give you highlights of all the games, pitch by pitch sequences, home and away radio feeds for every game, one free game a day and the ability to buy any game ala carte for a buck. It's a cheaper alternative to spending over $100 bucksva season.

While this is of no immediate interest to me, it does get me excited for future useful add-on apps on the XMB.

Sonos, I always knew that someday, someone would say something stupid enough that I would be obligated to finally post here. Thanks.

Sounds a lot like the subscriber packages cable providers offer that let you watch certain parts of the season or follow certain teams.
