Sony Online Entertainment, in an attempt to capitalize on the madness that stirs men's souls to purchase in-game items with real-life money, recently added three colorful Everquest 2 mounts to the Station Marketplace. For $25, you can purchase one of two versions of the mount: a Fierce Prowler, which improves its rider's combat abilities, or an Arcane Prowler, which boosts spellcasting abilities. You can check out a video of the mounts over on Shacknews.
SOE representatives claim the mounts were added to the storefront due to "player demand," which, if true, means the world has gone entirely bananacakes crazytown. We're going to go buy an economy-sized pallet of water bottles, board up our doors and windows, and go hide in our mattress fort.

I personally have no problem with MMOs selling vanity items such as pets or mounts, unless they have stat boosts to them. The point of an MMO is to always be better than those around and is killed when people can just buy items to make themselves better than others. I think if EQ continues stat improvements with items that cost money, than they will see there player base decline.

The stats from the mount are pretty much worthless. +5 to your dmg skills isn't something i'd spend $25 on, or even a plat on. Most mounts *even ones you buy for just plat, not faction/quested/ect) have way better stats. Its really kind of weird that they even added it. The only thing I can think of is that SOE is trying to break us into buying important gear later?
p.s. You can buy ok gear for your chars in EQ1 all ready...

It still blows my mind that players "demand" this stuff. Couldn't we demand something more exciting?

Meh. If you spend 20 hours or more per week in the game, a twenty-five dollar piece of bling doesn't seem unreasonable. So long as it isn't cooler than stuff you can earn legitimately.

I *like* my pretty pony, thank you very much.

I read all the comments here. I think its funny to read these. Everyone here defends their game like they do their college team, or pro team in any sports. Yankees > Red Sox... Or whatever you want to use as an analogy. I actively play BOTH games: WOW and EQ2. WOW does have a younger audience in general. I have done all levels of content in both games. WOW IS easier than EQ2. I know people will complain and say "No its not", but it is. That makes it more popular among the lesser mature audience, because that is more fun for them. EQ2 is not ALL older people, BUT, I rarely met anyone under 18, if even under 20ish. EQ2 is a fantastic game, and so is WOW. They're just different. Its like Badminton and Tennis. Similar games, but VERY different. Bet you didn't know that Badminton is the second most popular sport in the world. You probably said Badminton, WTF lol (LOLZ if you're a wow kid). Anyway, people are stupid in masses and will defend ideas more than they will actual property. So go on everyone, keep flame warring each other so I can enjoy knowing that my intellectual state of being is a bit deeper than those of you who defend your honor without being able to accurately explain why. :) .... NOTE: Not everyone is like that, some of you have excellent comments, but the majority... LOLZ?

Oh, and one more thing. To clarify why more people play WOW. Advertising. Sony owns EQ2. Sony has MANY more sources of income. Blizzard has WOW, and its other games. Blizzard doesn't have all sorts of electronics, nor does it have its own record label etc. Think about it people. More people playing a game doesn't make it a better game. Monkey see, Monkey Do. :)
