@ tired dev

Sorry to hear about the mess.

Making games is brutal work, esp. if the process is going down the path to hell...

@ a tired dev

Thanks for helping me understand some of the problems you guys had to deal with. You certainly seem calm and reasonable replying to somebody who was acting like a douche. Good luck with your future projects you work on.

Douche much?

Man, you must be the world's worst server! I'm sure that's what the Obsidian folks want on their lunch break, some douchey server busting their chops over a game they are developing... and obviously having problems developing. No one wants to make a crappy product, believe it or not. All these guys wanted to do was have a peaceful lunch and they unfortunately get you as their server, asking antagonistic questions while they are trying to enjoy their meal in peace.

And so what if it was an hour-and-a-half lunch; most developers put in long days, routinely working late into the night, especially during crunch time, so an hour-and-a-half lunch when they might be putting in a 14-hour day isn't so bad.

Hopefully they left you nothing more than two dimes for a tip; honestly, in my opinion, you didn't even deserve that much.

Man, people in their mid 20s and younger really are self-important, rude douches with no manners!

Douche!

WOW! I knew this game would totally suck. I work at a restaurant
right across the street from Obsidian, I have made comments to them
about the game whenever I am their server. For instance "with the
delay, it better not suck" or my favorite "what's taking so long,
you've been done for months?" Some guys laugh others don't seem to
like my comments, but see I was right all along. Obsidian seems to
have lots of time on their hands to go out and have a long lunch
break, with steaks and brews. I think their Wednesdays could've been
spent working and not having a hour and a half long lunch break
sometimes even two hours. All that "hard work" and your game still
blows.

Man, that's harsh. The concept for this game still looks great on paper, but I've been wary about the quality of the final product ever since I saw the trailers. It's a shame; I think we can all agree that the game COULD have been fantastic.

Damn. I won't say that I had high hopes for this game, especially after seeing recent trailers, but I did have mediocre hopes for it. Even with the bar set so low, it looks like I am in for disappointment.

I like video games that have solid characters and stories, and Alpha Protocol (according to Justin) appears to fall apart pretty badly on both, yet it also doesn't have the gameplay to create an addictive feeling that keeps me hooked.

I still will rent it like I planned, but this game went off my "must-buy" list months ago when it suddenly missed its ship date and no one said a damn thing. That was something I had never seen before and instantly made me suspicious of the game's completeness (it sounds weird, but trust me that's a word). At least it saved me $60, though.

Actually, I sorta mis-stepped in my words here. Not 100% how Justin feels about the story overall outside of it being boring, I just sorta inferred that "boring" was indicative of how bad it was.

But doesn't Fallout 3 have just as much of a mess to it than this game, yet it's almost universally loved.

Or is that the last time people will accept that amount of unpolish?

After playing this game for a good several hours, all I have to say is this.

If all what you want from games is for them to be nice and shiny and wow you with pretty graphics with the same old stale gameplay package, stay away from this game.

If you want a rich, compelling shooter-RPG experience and can live with unpolished production values and technical flaws, this game is a godsend. It's the anti-thesis of Mass Effect 2, which dumbed down the RPG elements in favor of the blasting. This game doesn't have the silky smooth, streamlined shooting gameplay of Mass Effect 2, but it does offer a level of depth and complexity which is reminiscent of Deus Ex. Wonderful game thus far.

i went and payed off my pre-order at GameStop 3 weeks ago, so I'm gonna get it, it saddens me, i first went to game informer for a review and saw a 6.5, i said it cant be, so i came to Joystiq for assurance, i would never have believed this review if Justin didn't write it, I'm gonna get the game 1 for sake of things, considering i have bought worst crap before and liked it (yes, I'm talking about you Two Worlds.), so hopefully all these technical issues are fixed through patches, even though i cant think of a game where they fixed its issues through patches, but, i don't mind the whole moving slowly aspect that most reviewers gave it, but, I've been waiting for this game for a year since the pushed the release from summer 2009 to summer 2010 to work out its faults, which they still didn't seem to do.

and for the sake of you guys

TL/DR*

Bleh, damn shame. You'd think Mass Effect x Spies would be awesome too.

But WTF, the game was done 6 months ago? That's November...wasn't the game supposed to be released last October? If it was that crappy, why did they delay it and 7 months and then only work on it for one? Seems dumb.

@a tired dev:

Thank you for your insight into the development process. It doesn't make this game any better, as I have personally discovered, but the game certainly does feel like a lot of cool-sounding components that were thrown together somewhat haphazardly, without any particular direction on gameplay.

I don't think Obsidian is a bad developer by any means, since they have great past and future games to their credit. I just hope you guys learned your lesson.

I do gotta ask though, what makes this a bad game?

Are some bugs and visual issues the axiom of which to declare the game not worth the time? Is not the design of the gameplay, and the gameplay its self not worth any value?

Is an RPG only as good as its visuals?

Let's be honest though (and sorry Tired Dev this isn't a personal attack) but historically has this not consistently been the case with Obsidian? KOTOR II broken from the get go, NWN broken from the get go which MAY have been fixed in the expansions but sorry, it was so broken I couldn't go back to it. Honestly, this doesn't give me a lot of hope when it comes to their other work and that's the thing. Two products have been released up until now, broken. They release a new product and it's broken.

It sounds like there are serious managerial issues. It's obvious that the people involved in development have good ideas and are truly interested in making great games (as evidenced by the comments of the tired dev) and some of the ideas they come out with but consistently they break their products and it makes them nigh unplayable.

Wow, Justin, way to overreact. Can't get past a few minor bug issues to enjoy a fairly satisfying core, huh? Who cares if the AI is dumb - I'd rather they be easy and fun to kill than complicated and frustrating. Do those popping textures REALLY take you out of the game for the all-of two seconds they appear for? And the dialogue stands up better than the dreck that came out of Heavy Rain, or better than most other games for that matter. And the combat is passable.

This is why I'm starting to despise reviewers, I mean really not bothering to read them anymore: one stray opinion tosses the game out the window. You focus so much on the technical aspect that it just obliterates your opinion of what may be a decent overall product.

"A game with great promise for a PC CRPG but delivery was multiformat the whole way" (tm)

Multiformat is killing gaming. Devs are being pulled in to many directions.

A recent survey showed the average console gamer was now 32 and the average PC gamer 38. Yet we had more intelligent mature games in the non multiformat market of 10+ years ago than we do now, with titles like The Longest Journey, Planescape Torment, System Shock 2, Sacrifice, Giants, etc. Now it seems like all games are multiformat and are written for the lowest common denominator, meaning Dragon Age has couples making love in their underwear and the most hard boiled Sergeant Major in a game will never swear how ever much you muck up! We get disney style games based on adult movies like The Godfather and it seems the only thing that publishers will go for is copious amounts of violent, bloody combat in practically every game!

The very genres that allowed for non violent gaming, deep CRPG's like Planescape Torment and the Adventure Game genre, are in the process of or have been dropped by the mainstream games publishers. You'd be hard put to find a game released in the last 5 years, outside of the Sims (which happens to be the biggest selling game of all time - is there a message there?!) that does not progress the story through violence.

If the market doesn't change, then were heading for another collapse. You cannot have games being written as though they are for 13 year olds and then expect 30/40 something adults to keep buying them!
