APB in-game voice chat will be ad-supported

"Calling all Cars! Calling all Cars! Robbery in progress at the Old National Bank on 3rd and Vine. Three suspects, armed and extremely dangerous. Hostages taken. Please respond. Also, why not stop by Burger King for an order of juicy, fall-off-the-bone short ribs, available for a limited time this Summer. Ribs are filling and and extremely delicious, and go great with an order of Burger King's beloved fresh french fries. Repeat, delicious with fresh french fries."
An APB beta participant recently noticed a "VOIP Premium" option in his account management page, which promises to keep ads off of the in-game chat program in exchange for real-life monies. Developer Realtime Worlds was quick to clarify the terms of these ads -- they'll only play when traveling between Districts, and only if the player hasn't heard an advertisement in the last three hours. Sadly, surreal broadcasts like the one presented in the above paragraph will never come to fruition.

I've always liked Burger King's fries way better. It doesn't matter though, because Arby's fries are better than both of them.

@Ezio Auditore da Firenze Huh. Maybe it's a regional thing. The fries from Burger Kings around here are just.. garbage. Mushy and tasteless.
If I'm not pressed for time, I'll usually go to BK for a burger, and then go next door to Wendy's for some fries, since they have the best fries around here, at least in my opinion.
McDonald's is good, too, as long as you get them hot and fresh. Otherwise, meh.
Good call on Arby's fries as well. The Waffle fries are near the top. =P

I never understood the hate on ad placement, I mean the game devs are making money , and there are tons of ads in the real world so it's not like billboards shouldn't exist in game worlds.
Don't get me wrong, cutting off your friends chatter to hear an ad is pretty extreme and that kind of ad placement is not acceptably.

@Coffey : The hate on Ads is because there SHOULDN'T be billboards and commercials and radio spots EVERYWHERE in real life, let alone in our video games.
I made a point two years ago to get rid of Cable TV, stop listening to the radio, and try my hardest to just generally avoid advertisements in general. Two years later I can not stand any form of commercial. If I'm at a Doctor's office and the TV is on and a Colgate commercial comes on I feel uneasy inside of myself. Once you realize how perverse and overwhelming the advertisement industry is, you can't unseen it.
But ultimately, I play video games to escape from real life. Putting ads in games just takes away from that and is just further proof that our beloved hobby is going down the drain.

I think all these ads may just be a cultural thing.

@Sally : If I wasn't already married, you'd have just won my heart.
@ch3burashka : I didn't say I've completely stopped watching television or movies, I've just started taking the route of Sally above. Netflix Instant Streaming is amazing because of it's ad-free-ness. Torrents are great as well. When I go to see a movie in theaters, which is rare (because most are junk remakes/sequels/exploitation/etc), I don't mind sitting through an ad or two if they're before/after the trailers. They may be advertisement, but I do like trailers. A really well made movie trailer is enough to make you forget about the movie you're seeing. But I digress. I'm not cutting society out, just as much of the junk as I can.
@Tenacioustoaster : Yes, I have seen some of the Kevin Butler spots, some of which I actually looked up on my own, namely the Uncharted commercial. I think that some advertisements can be acceptable, and I'm not just saying that because it's video game related. Any advertisement with a sense of self-awareness and strong wit can win me over. At work earlier tonight I caught an ad by a big insurance company that stated the most common element in the universe was Hydrogen, and the second most common was advertisements. I gotta admit that it made me smirk. Not enough to make me change my insurance, but it's good to know they're aware of themselves.
Next up on Saint's rants: Modern music and the kids who listen to it.

@Saint43 man, i couldn't agree with what you said more. it's sad that gamers have come to accept advertising in their games, and console gamers have come to expect it and willingly pay for content that should be free. i too stopped watching television via cable, when i am forced into watching commercials at someones house or visiting parents it makes me CRINGE. it's such a heavily funded part of america and people just keep eating it up. they want to be told what to buy even if they don't need it and seemingly the majority never researches anything anymore. in game advertising is such a horrible thing. you summed it up best when you said these are game dev's, a great game sells itself! not figuring out ways to create microtransactions.
this game is extremely sub par for a number of reasons, they introduced their pay to play scheme VERY late in the development stages, then tacked on pay for voip? i mean if this doesn't set off red flags that the company is in trouble i don't know what it would take.
really it just makes me sad that game developers are at the mercy of extremely rich business folks who keep pushing these bad features, and pushing games out before they are in fact completed and well tested. instead we get to be the testers and it's really made me lose a lot of interest in gaming over the past years.

I think this model is tolerable, even if it takes the player out of the experience somewhat. As with Hulu and internet video, the ad model is still in its experimental stage, and I think it's best if the consumer and advertisers work together on a compromise instead of them forcing ads down our throats and the consumers vehemently opposed to them.

"ahh it's only 10 seconds during a loading screen every few hours, no worries, we already got ads on billboards and stuff, what's the diff?"
"pfft, a 25 second ad before i zone? what do i care, the game has to load anyway..."
"30 second commercial before the game starts and a couple ads while the game loads, so what, cable companies have been running ads for YEARS..."
"holy shit, 2 and a half minute commercial breaks between quests and missions?"
say NO to ads in your game. sure, i believe that game devleopers deserve to get paid, but i don't think they should be getting paid to find new ways to deliver advertising to consumers, they aren't in the market as an advertising agency, they are in the market to make good games... and guess what, if you have a good game on your hands, it'll make money with or without product placement.
I don't care if the ad is once a day for 5 seconds, i do't want to hear it buzzing in my ear when i'm trying to talk to my friends online... EVER.
Especially considering this game requires a box purchase, and a monthly fee... subscribers shouldn't have to put up with that shit. This is the kind of stuff F2P mmos do... not retail games with monthly fees.

The ads wouldn't be a problem if the game was F2P. In fact, I think we can all agree that if we're getting something for free (online video, email, videogame service, for instances), the presence of advertisements isn't a big deal (at least, not for me). The big problem with APB, it seems, is that they are placing advertisements on top of a subscription, which is absolutely ridiculous, no matter how you spin it.

Ageed - if it was F2P, that's just a price to pay so the game can survive, but this is inherently screwed. It's basically bolting on a new revenue stream (whether it's advertisers paying for the commercials or player paying to not hear them) to an already pay to play game & is a bad precedence to set.
I've followed the game a bit, but likely wont be playing. If the core audience that visits their boards & are the ones pre-ordering & buying are not up in arms and throwing an absolute fit, then something is very very wrong.

So, let me get this straight: a game that I have to pay a monthly fee for is going to mix advertisements in with the voice chat? There goes any interest or curiosity I had about this game. I was considering trying it for a couple months when it came out, but forget it.
This is absolutely ridiculous. I can only hope that consumers will vote with their wallets and make it clear that this type of thing isn't going to be tolerated.

As far as I'm concerned there is nothing wrong with ads in games IN PRINCIPLE. The way it is done in Burnout Paradise for example is fine; there are passive billboards strewn throughout the world as they would be in real life, which are unobtrusive and can be mostly ignored (and to a certain degree increases immersion by making it seem more like the real world).
Things like this however, not so much; it reduces immersion and, for me at least, will put me off buying the game.
Other bad examples include Wipeout HD which added ads during random loading screens. It's not THAT bad, but the fact they were added retro-actively pissed me off - if they had been there from the start I may have resisted buying it (held off until a sale or something). If I wanted advertising I'd go on the 360...yeah, I went there. No Xbox hate intended, but I really dislike MS forcing me to see their ads whenever I power on. I really don't care what game you want to sell me.

...man am I glad I live in the UK with the lovely ad-free BBC :).

@Alphathon I never even thought of them as ads in Burnout Paradise (even though they obviously are), they just feel like part of the world - like the locations in (the original) Crazy Taxi (at the time did, at least).

@KeenCommander Which is why they are good - they aren't rammed down your throat. Ads that are so obvious and in-your-face make me want to buy the product less since they are annoying, so in my case at least don't even work (I'm sure I'm not alone, but unfortunately in the minority). The ones in Burnout at best subtly condition you to like Slingbox or Burger King (or make somebody think "I could really do with a burger right now), but I doubt they make anybody actively hate the brand they are advertising, so they are arguably more effective.

You will receive a short audio ad once every 3 hours. HOWEVER ads will only be heard when first entering a district.
So for example:
1) You start up the game and enter the social district.
2) You will hear a short audio ad.
3 You stay in social for 2 hours and then switch to an action district.
4) Upon entering the action district you will NOT hear an ad.
5) You play in the action district for 5 hours and do not hear any ads.
6) You exit the game.
7) You start up the game at a later time and enter a district.
8) You will hear a short audio ad.

People, read before you bitch and moan. THIS IS NOT THAT BAD!

A lot people "bitching" have read how it's being implimented. The point is, is not okay to put an audio ad into the game or make you pay to not hear one, for a game that you are already
1) buying upfront
2) paying some sort of fee to play (be it monthly or the time purchase)
Whether it's once per play session (if you time it just right, like your example, which assumes you're not going to change districts around the 3 hour mark, or are just going to quit out...) or once every single three hours isn't the issue. The issue is that it's just plain wrong to do on principle alone..
How, in your eyes is it a GOOD thing?

Strangely, all I'm hearing about APB lately are the funny ways the devs want to make money with it. No monthly subscription fee? Why not? Guaranteed revenue.
The idea of having to deal with ads, buying incremental play time (or other microtransaction schemes, in other games) only reinforce my belief that only monthly subscriptions are the way to pay for an MMO. If I play a certain MMO regularly, I have no problem paying for that, because IF I play one, I'll play it nearly to the exclusion of everything else. And if the game fails to keep me interested, I cancel the subscription and that's it.

some times ads can be a bit unbearable. Like recently I noticed youtube has placed a short few second ad in front the video you try to watch. It seems fine at the moment because those ads pop up only once in a while. But I've tried other video services where if you try to watch a series of shorts made by an indie group and 15 sec ads pop up between the beginning of every video then that just gets unbearable.
