You can expect another firmware update for your PS3 this September. No, it won't add PlayStation Move support to the system (you already have that, folks!); instead, it will add support for 3D Blu-ray movies -- of which there's currently only one.
As with Blu-ray movies, Sony is using the PS3 as a Trojan horse for pushing new technology. 3D is a major corporate focus for Sony, as evidenced by plans to support not only 3D movies and games, but 3D photos as well "later in the year." SCEE senior director Mick Hocking has also promised support for 3D broadcasts through the Europe-exclusive PlayTV service, as well. Additionally, "YouTube will be supporting 3D content over the next 12 months as well – and you'll be able to watch that on the PlayStation 3."
Hocking also believes that many of us will adopt 3D cameras of our own in the future. "And as you start taking 3D pictures of your family or 3D camcorder movies, you can play those back on PS3, too," Hocking explains. Hopefully, that means we'll be able to use our PS3s to share 3D photos taken by our Nintendo 3DSs.

I think that being skeptical about a new product is a lot more practical than just jumping on the bandwagon from the start.

I probably should've been more clear about my rage. It was really directed more towards Sony and YouTube and the overall endless shoving of 3D down the public's throats.
I still enjoy reading the Joystiq articles.

There are at least five 3D movies, not one:
- Coraline
- Ice Age 3
- Monsters vs Aliens
- Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
- Grand Canyon Adventure (IMAX 3D)

What dude below you said... But Monsters Vs. Aliens is the SHOWCASE 3D movie at most electronics stores (at least in Canada, every BB and FS have it on display).
Coraline is not actualy stereoscopic 3D yet, but that's one that I would be all over getting 3D for. It's so far the ONLY movie that was incredibly impressive in 3D, everything else has been mostly unnecessary, although the depth it created in Avatar was probably the only thing that made the movie exciting to watch.

@WC @andsoitgoes This is, actually, incorrect. Coraline has been transferred to 3D Blu-Ray already, and is being demoed by Panasonic (Saw it with my own eyes. Full feature, not trailer). Don't actually remember if it's their Starter Kit movie, but think that in some regions it is.

Coraline and Ice Age 3 are currently Panasonic exclusives (much like Monsters vs Aliens).
To the person who first replied to me, every movie I listed has a blu-ray 3D disk. I think you need to do some better research before trying to cite inaccuracies in my post.

There is only one 3D movie available for purchase on Amazon.com, and it is, like Joystiq reported, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Amazon.com is also selling Monsters vs. Aliens in 3D, but only as part of a Samsung starter kit.
http://amzn.to/bUjVxw
Whether there are 3D versions of other movies out there or not, if they're not available to purchase, it doesn't help.

I wish they'd put effort into getting some of the PS3 features working better, like a browser that doesn't suck and maybe update the XMB. And the store could use a facelift, too.

*Sighs* I wish Sony would stop updating the PS3 with things that only focus on their agenda, and give us features we want. I feel that the PS3 is a great machine with some serious potential but Sony, w/ some bad decisions, is holding it back.
I can understand they can't give everything consumers want, but it feels like even some smaller requests aren't being delivered.

I can't see why anyone who owns a PS3 would complain about the addition of 3D Blu-ray play back. Even if you don't plan on using it anytime soon, having the option in the future is always nice.
I can see why people complain when they take away OtherOS, but adding features/options is pretty much always good.

The problem I have with is it's lack of usefulness. I mean think about stuff like custom soundtrack for all games, a lack of multitasking certain media features, no improvements on the music player in general, multiple account log-ins. Basically anything that's useful for right now isn't used in most, and anything that's (for most people) is useless, like 3D BD/3D Youtube is getting incredible support.
Basically any feature Sony brings to the PS3 is half-ass with anything interesting depending only on developers who don't even know about it until it's released on retail PS3s. Save for trophies, Sony hasn't promoted any existing features to most developers and/or made them mandatory so people actually get some use out of them.

In one year? Talk about short-sighted.
In the U.S., HD TV penetration isn't even over the 50% mark yet. And those have been out for a while now. 3D TV isn't going to take off until it's free from the glasses, it's more affordable, and the programming is more broad.
All of that stuff is not happening in 1 year. I'd be shocked if it happened in 10.

Speaking as someone who has been consulting to content providers and delivery platforms (ie Studios and Cable Providers) for the last 2 years on 3D experiences/UI, I think most people on this list are taking the short view of 3D. I I have experienced many tech and content demos that will knock your socks on their asses. The inability to see potential in the future does not bestow expertise on its viability. Many 3D haters will be eating their words 1 year hence, believe it. You will never want to watch sports or concerts on TV in any other way after you've done it in 3D, and there's a lot more in store for sure. What many people are seeing as "new technology" now has actually been in the works/R&D for years, it's just that the results are only trickling out now - there is a deluge in the works, and Sony is just getting lined up for the inevitable.

3D doesn't seem like a legitimate technology at this point in time. It's expensive and it really doesn't add much to the experience. It is however a way to make bad entertainment look slightly better by adding fancy effects. I can't wait for the sequel to Jaws 3D....

I gotta say, i was turned off by the whole 3D Phenom because i found 3D movies to be contrived and corny. Adding the 3D element to a video game, however, admittedly catches my attention. Video games are already an immersive experience, add the 3D element and motion controls and that immersion is ten fold.
It isn't confirmed, but the idea of playing Child of Eden with Move + 3D, just sounds mindblowing. Don't give a damn about 3D movies, i do care about 3D video games. I'd venture to say that all the 3D naysayers at E3 were singing a different tune when they tried the 3DS.
I'll wait for 3D TV prices to drop, the prices seem kind of arbitrarily inflated because it's new to market.

The MSRPs are actually pretty much in line with the top of the line TVs from the 2009 model year. These are just getting a lot more attention is all, so people think they are inflated.

Sweet. I've already uploaded a few of my 3D shorts to YouTube; if PS3 will allow them to be played on new 3DTVs, so much the better.
BTW, Have you seen the prices Coraline and Ice Age are fetching over $120 each on eBay?

Aint getting anywhere near this bug-a-boo because it aint 3D!
It is Stereo-Scopic. Until someone gets a 'Star Trek: Next Generation' monitor, we will Never have a True 3 Dimensional screen. In case you're wondering what the fudge I'm talking about~
Scene in Question with Captain picard on bridge:
One [And Only One] scene in the early seasons showed him talking to someone on the main screen. Usually we get to see picard facing the camera- than alien facing the camera- But~ Then they show picard in Profile facing alien... Who is Also in Profile!!!
Best example is if you wished to see the other side of an object you'd just need to go the the other side of the screen without needing to press buttons or joysticks to do it~~~~
That's THREE DIMENSIONAL even the latests Game Informer wrote about the stereo scopic screen on the 3dds

Go ahead and wait to enjoy your version of 3D in 3 or 4 hundred years. In the meanwhile leave us alone with out stereoscopic 3D that's been around for the pas couple of hundred. While you are at it, why not sell you car as well, because that's not transportation, it's just locomotion. Being converted into electromagnetic radiation and then sent to materialize on another planet, that's TRANSPORTATION.
