If EA and the Steven Spielberg couldn't pull of a first-person hybrid built on "escape gameplay" and driven by an emotional co-op dynamic, featuring an AI-controlled partner -- spoiler alert -- from the future, whose character evolution was to be determined by non-verbal interaction with the player, then who could pull it off? Probably no one. "LMNO," as this project was code-named, was officially canned by EA last month -- and it's been dead for at least a year, according to 1UP's new in-depth investigation into the game.
The report -- and definitely read the whole thing -- is a compelling tale in and of itself: the inside scoop on a big-budget experiment (a "hyper-replayable" 2- to 3-hour game with no multiplayer) that would later morph into an Uncharted clone (complete with "an alien version of Megan Fox"), dubbed The Escape Artist, before being canceled altogether. But the LMNO story is also a striking reminder of just how inflexible AAA game development has become.
EA tried admirably to invest in new IP several years ago, but its actually released games didn't provide the returns the publisher had expected from consumers. Had it come together as original designers Doug Church and Randy Smith once envisioned, LMNO could have been EA's most ambitious original IP to date. Instead, it fell apart as the industry fell back on iteration (you know, "sequelitis") and made jaw-dropping investments in socially-networked casual gaming as the path to future profitability.
LMNO once carried the heavy burden of being the video game that would finally "make you cry." Assuming that the industry has yet to recognize this milestone as having been achieved, the mission now seems better suited for an indie developer with nothing to lose; one free from the concerns of the corporate goliath: namely, staying in business.

Without a central focus, developers can't afford to step out of the box too much, its unfortunate, but money and time restrictions strangle creativity :(

I wonder if they could release a "demo" on XBL like Dead Rising: Case Zero and charge for it. They could make a little return money that way to put into another project. Maybe?

It's not that there's no money to underwrite the project (this is EA after all), but that they don't expect to make ENOUGH money on a new idea (this is EA after all!).

Exactly! Put it out as downloadable content to test the market. Their is no excuse today for canceling a new project like this. Develop the gameplay for a brief section, polish the graphics, provide feedback and pre-order options in the demo, and put it out there to prove out the idea. Either it will sink or swim but EA would know unequivocally.

The only tears I cried during Heavy Rain were tears of frustration at how the story got so dumb so fast.

I uh teared up a little at the end of my first playthrough of Dragon Age. It depends on the choices you made up to that point but the ending of that game can really pack a punch.

This is kinda like when people say "imagine if lived and how they would produce such magical ". If Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, or Janis Joplin were alive today they would probably be producing crap just like Pearl Jam, Bob Dylan, and Jefferson Airplane did in their later years.
This game can give people a chance to speculate that "what if" the giant evil corporation didn't kill the artist vision. Yeah it could have been magical but there is a much better chance that it would have sucked.

There are games already that have made me cry, too late.
The ending of Out of This World is one really that got me. SPOILER. Seeing him carrying your body after you had died (left up to the player to decide whether you died or not.)
Hell, even the ending of Conker's Bad Fur Day, while not making you cry, was a "Aww, hell no" moment.

I would be crying if I tried to make it all the way to the end of Out Of This World/Another World, too. That game's difficulty level is absolutely insane.
Though, in a way, this game sounds like kind of a modern reimagining of the concept, minus the obscenely frustrating trial-and-error gameplay.

Sandwich, no, I am not emotionally fragile. You need to know how the game went. If you haven't played it, or are never going to play it, skip the next bit of text if you don't want the spoiler.
You are in an alien land. You are found by a squad of aliens. One alien doesn't shoot you when he sees you. Instead he appears to be simply curious about you. For this he is locked up with you, and sentenced to die. Over the course of the game, you help one another in getting out of things. At the end of the game, you finally escape, and die. He picks up your body, and carries you off. There is no talking, it's all silent.
As for Conker's Bad Fur Day, which I did not cry, it's mean to be a sucky ending. It's a parody of Conan the Barbarian. The ending rather sucks, and it's one Conker knows sucks because he broke the 4th wall.
gatotsu, yes, Out of This World was hard. Almost instant-kill on everything. There was an unofficial sequel for the Sega CD called Heart of the Alien.

SPOILER - ///TROLL COMMENT///
Hey guess what Spielberg; I don't want to cry when I'm playing a game, in-fact I don't even want to cry when I'm watching a movie.
Anyway, this game would have been interesting to play & it's great when you can get a group to pursue an excessively ambitious goal. It's also impressive that they reached a point where they knew they could not continue /or were aware it was the right time to stop. Many teams just keep pushing forward until either a) they 'fail' or b) release a product which performs badly in the market.

But this game -did- already make me cry, simply for being canceled by a bunch of monkeys in suits because it wasn't similar enough to last week's big seller.

EA is all about rereleasing FIFAs, NHLs, Need for speeds and the like that are all exactly the same. The creativity died in that company decades ago. Not surprising this would get cancelled... They should have changed the company name to Electronic Businessmen, the Arts part is long gone.
