Psychonauts 2: Tim Schafer is 'ready to do it'

From our "It's Fun to Dream" file comes a story from the latest issue of PSM3, in which Double Fine's Tim Schafer says he's ready to do a sequel to his classic action platformer Psychonauts. So ... Psychonauts 2: Revenge of the Milkman coming fall of 2012, pre-order now to get your commemorative goggles. Right?

Not so fast, bucko. Schafer wants to make a new Psychonauts, but he still needs to find someone to help foot the bill. "It's really a question of getting a publisher who's interested in doing it," he told the magazine. "Over the years it's gotten into the hands of a lot of people ... so if all these people were going to buy the sequel it would be a big hit."

So, any of you have a few spare millions kicking around? Maybe if everybody pooled together? Let's see, we have ... $7.12, a piece of Bazooka and a marble. That's ... that's not going to cut it, is it?

@GameJackal Yes but the PS2 version was a cruddy port...... Alos, Sony can't put PS2 games on PSN as not all PS3s have backwards compatbility.

Great, time for another platformer that has to be featured in every magazine and on every website simply because no one had heard of it for a year after it's release.

Maybe it'll star adult Raz and Lili saving the world as elite Psychonauts! Oh, I'm so excited to hear that he wants to make it. Please let it happen!

This post needs a disclaimer after the title: "But not yet." Getting my hopes up way too high. Of course he's ready to do it, everyone is. That being said, having actual hope for a sequel is better than nothing!

I got $13.41, some stale pizza crusts and bubble solution I use to blow bubbles at my cat.

I hope they do it. Please.

A grand idea, but you have to wonder what publisher would be crazy enough take on such a task, for our sakes.

Maybe they can do a HD remake of Psychonauts, and use the money made from that to fund the next version. Just as long as they do a better job than the PS2 version. Sound issues, freezing, save game problems ... it was a horrible port.

@davek HD remake would still cost a fair amount of money. The sales of it would first have to pay off the development costs, then go towards funding the sequel. They are better of doing what others have said: get it on sale on XBLA to drum up interest. Heck, re-print it on PS2 (which sadly won't happen) so PS2/PS3 w/ BC can play it. That would be the cheapest way to do it.

While I agree that an HD remake would be amazing (a la Beyond Good and Evil HD), I just don't see it happening. Then again, Beyond Good and Evil is getting a HD make-over to drum up interest for its sequel and I'm not sure how or why that got approved. It could happen. I for one hope so :finger crossed:

I love just about every Tim Schafer adventure game, loved Brutal Legend, can't stand Psychonauts. No idea why.

He should tell publishers that Psychonauts 2 will be a violent shooter. That would get funding and would sell.

Or at the very least, get it on the Deal of the Week. Nothing like a good discount to drum up some business on an old game. I wouldn't mind buying the game for a third time if they did that (I had it for PS2 and bought a friend a copy as a gift).

Tim Shafer, if you are out there, I'm begging you here...Grim Fandango for the iPad. Please.

@totorototoro That has nothing to do with Schafer. LucasArts owns the right to the game. You are best to beg them for a re-release.

I still feel a little bad that I got this used, dirt cheap, years after it's release. I had no idea. I'd gladly make a day one purchase for failing to support the original!

This is news ive been waiting years for! As for the funding mby sell the games soundtrack early on or possibly have a fans section in the credits and let people buy space there for a set fee.

I bought the first one but I still haven't finished it...it's not because I didn't like the game though. What I did play I really liked! If there's a second one I'll definitely buy it. I just need to finish the original one first...

The first one is criminally unloved by the public.

Maybe he can do something similar to the minecraft guy. Put out something along the lines of a beta (like the first level) and say hey if you want more please donate said amount and you will get the game when it releases at that price.

I'm all for a sequel, if they fix the gameplay.

Oh hell even if they don't, I'll still play it for the writing and visual design, like I did the first one. But it would be nice...

Oh my gosh, thank you Tim!!! FINALLY! Just don't make it an RPG, keep the adventuring elements & comedy & you've got my money in your pocket

Oh and don't let whoever did the first one's advertising do it...in fact don't let whoever has been doing your advertising for any of your games do it. I still remember the old psychonauts ads and wondering "What the heck was that?" and Brutal Legend was very misleading. I wanted to bash everyone with that axe, not lead other people to do it for me :-p

The trouble is, Psychonauts wasn't a huge selling title. We all loved it, of course, but it's a tough sell to the mainstream. When you factor in that lawsuit from Activision over Brutal Legend (which was about funding, no less) it's going to make this an uphill battle to get this game made.

I really want to be wrong, but I believe that's how prospective publishers will look at the idea.

Loved the first game! Really did not like his recent work with Jack black.... But everyone makes a black sheep game sometimes I would buy Psychonauts 2 if it was out there.

You guys are mean.

Pre ordered...in my mind.
