@Kevinsilhouette You mean Dreamcast and also Sega really didn't kill it they had no choice because the PS2 killed the dreamcast with all its Toy Story 2 graphics lies.

@GTThaAceman Sad but true. If Dreamcast would have released a year earlier it may have dug a little bit of a foothold. I was there 9/9/99, loved my DC and was a late adopter to PS2. I'm happy to see some of the games coming to light.

@Faenix PS2 became a great system, but it wasn't particularly great at launch, especially compared to the DC. PS2's game library at launch was pretty small.

I worked at a Gamestop during that era. It was amazing the amount of customers who wouldn't buy a Dreamcast simply because they knew the PS2 was right around the corner.

DC was a great system. PS2 had tons more games in the long run, but considering the size of DC's library, it had a huge number of great games compared to bad ones.

I don't get who made up the crap about Sony killing Dreamcast with inflated PR talk but its really ridiculous. Who pays attention to what Sony says at gaming conferences? I bought a PS2 over a Dreamcast because of Madden. I would say 99.999% of people who bought a PS2 never heard the Toy Story reference. Nobody but Sega really made games for it because they all got burned by Sega producing 5 different systems in the late 90's.

Genesis
32X
Sega CD
Sega Saturn
Dreamcast

If I was a publisher, I wouldn't make a game for a Sega system because they are probably going to replace in maybe a year.

Sega looks at publishers not wanting to publish, easily pirated games, and then Microsoft with a lot money coming into the market and makes the right decision to focus on making games. Sega would be screwed if they had their own system now because they can't even make first party games that would be a system seller.

@GTThaAceman I felt the same way and held a resentment to Sony up to this gen. Bought a 360 first because it had better game when they first came out, but now the story has changed and the PS3 has the better exclusives and a system that unlike the 360 hasn't died. I will forever carry the memories of my DC with me, but Sony finally won me over with a fantastic system, more exclusives, and over all a much better value this gen.

First off, the Genesis was released in the late 80s, and the Sega CD and 32x were released in the early to mid 90s. Hardly the late 90s... Besides, that was about on pace with Nintendo's hardware output.

Secondly, the Dreamcast died because a majority of consumers and developers/publishers believed the hype about the PS2. Sony said it would have a hard drive and a modem, but were slow to deliver on the promise, and really, it took the release of the original Xbox to get them to follow through. In the meantime, no one bought Dreamcasts and no developers made games for it (most famously EA, probably because NFL2K was better than Madden) despite the fact that it was online capable on day one and did everything Sega said it would do.

Really, the PS2 is the best example of hype triumphing over a better product I can think of. Sony tried it again with the PS3 but failed, thanks to a revamped Nintendo and real competition from Microsoft.

@FriedConsole man.. madden wasnt that big of an issue either.. if you remember correctly.. they had this little series called nfl 2k.. look at nba 2k right now.. just like people buy ps3s for the show.. i bet people would buy a sega console for nba 2k... also, the sega cd (which came out in 1992.. not the late 90s) was actually quite successful.

the real thing that killed sega was its terrible internal management. publishers werent worried about the saturn and 32x.. ea actually got in a feud with sega because nfl 2k looked so good and was a threat. its documented that a big wig at ea told sega that if they went ahead with their 2k sports line.. they wouldnt support the dreamcast. the dreamcast was the most successful launch in console history..

what really killed sega?

the 32x was sega of americas idea, while the saturn was japans. they had stopped communicating properly because sega of japan was bitter that sega of america was able to make the mega drive a success. then.. sega of america decides to secretly launch the saturn. they dont tell publishers or retailers (which strained segas relationship with walmart and kaybee toys) of the launch.. and also launch it at 400 bucks while the playstation will be 300. they also stopped supporting the genesis, while super nintendo had games for a couple more years.. making consumers a little weary. bernie stolar, sega of americas president in the saturn era had a stupid policy towards 2d games.. some of the saturns most popular japanese games never saw localization due to this... at that time, japan was still the top when it came to video games, and the saturn was actually really successful in japan. sakura wars could possibly have been a big hit.. it was the 2nd most anticipated title in 96 in japan.. only behind ff VII. so yeah.. all that coupled with the fact that ea was threatened by nfl 2k made the dreamcast doomed to fail.. even though it was just as good of a console as the ps2.

on top of all that.. sega had no other source of income.. the only console manufacturer thats survived off of video games alone is nintendo. if msft and sony didnt have their original businesses.. they would have died making the ps3 and 360.

I said Sega was producing 5 different systems in the late 90's not released them. Maybe they weren't still producing/supporting 5 different systems in the late 90's that were introduced in the early 90's. Maybe that was the problem?

Please stop while you're ahead. They weren't all released in the 90's. Period.

Lastly, what is your definition of "late 90s"? Because if it was 1995 when the Saturn came out, yes there were a few systems technically out (not supported) like the Sega CD, 32X and Genesis. But most people here would peg "late 90s" at 1998 and 1999, which at that point, the Saturn was dead in America, the Dreamcast was released in 1999 WITH NO OTHER CONSOLE COMPETITION FROM SEGA... meaning the Genesis, 32X, and Sega CD were also gone at that point.

The only people Sega really had to compete with was Sony and themselves, and they failed at both.

Fine wrong on dates. I don't want to go into a stupid argument on what the hell is mid 90's. Still doesn't me wrong on the point that Sega produced too many systems before the Dreamcast.

You seem to want to get me on a semantics without addressing the point that Sega produced way too many systems in a short period of time and that was the biggest factor in the failure of the Dreamcast.

@FriedConsole still.. sega only had 3 consoles out in a 10 year period, and thats pretty standard when it comes to consoles. the genesis came out in 89, the saturn in 95, and the dreamcast in 99. now, if the saturn had come out in 94.. sega would have been right on track to follow the usual 5 year release schedule of new hardware.

take nintendo 64 in japan.. there was the 64 in 1996, the 64DD in 1999, the gamecube in 01, and the wii in 06.. so thats like saying nintendo released 4 "consoles" within a decade.. but we all see how well the wii has done. sega just didnt know how to manage their business.. or else the dreamcast would probably be getting ports of guitar hero and call of duty too.

I thought it was the CD Burner that killed the Dreamcast? Seeing as how you could go to Blockbuster, rent the games, copy them, and then play them with out any extra bells & whistles.

How can you count the 64DD but not the 32X or Sega CD?? Really? If you count the Japanese 64DD you got let me count the Sega TeraDrive and Sega Pico.

Sigh, almost didn't have to read that again...

It wasn't. It didn't help things but the sales were going pretty strong up till the PS2 was released. There's hard evidence everywhere that points at the trend declining as soon as the PS2 came out.

Piracy is just anecdotal. Just like it is today. It hurts, but I suspect used game sales take a much bigger chunk out than they few people who pirate that would actually buy the game if piracy wasn't around.

Sega decided their own fate after their many missteps after the Genesis. Sony's PS2 just buried the coffin for good.

@FriedConsole that was my point.. if youre counting 32x.. youre counting 64DD, or the famicom disk drive for the original famicom.

and lol at really stretching to bring up the pico and teradrive. one was marketed as a toy and didnt even technically have software.. and the other was a pc that played megadrive games. once again... by your logic.. we'll have to count sony's net yaroze (the ps1 dev kit available to consumers), and psx (sony's dvr that played ps2 games).
