No need to watch aging spies smoke cigarettes or take a sandwich break when it comes to installing Gran Turismo 5 -- Eurogamer has confirmed with Sony that the game will actually have a feature allowing users to install it in chunks while playing. "If users choose not to install the data straight away it will do it in stages as new areas, tracks, etc. are accessed during normal gameplay,"a Sony representative stated. The install weighs in at 6.3 gigglebytes, unsurprising considering there are like eleventy billion cars in the game and takes about 40 minutes when installing straight-up, Eurogamer reports.
Gran Turismo 5 launches in the US on November 24. No, we're serious -- no joking!

How does it take 40 mins to install 6.3GB? That seems rather lengthy considering the 360 installs a 4.7GB disc in less than 10 mins. Before anyone asks, I own a PS3 and a 360 (and a Wii) so I'm not gonna show bias. I am actually curious why it would take so long?

@Styli I may be wrong, but doesn't each PS3 encrypt the code into it's own unique language? I think that's why installs generally take longer on PS3s.

My guess is that it actually installs the files in a specific way so they're accessed faster, but the data is just plain copied over on the 360, i.e., it's just copied as an iso of the disc onto the hard drive and runs it as it would if it were on the disc.

Might have something to do with the BD read speeds. Also, 6.3GB doesn't seem like a whole lot for a game that's been in development since the 1980s (unless, of course, not everything is installed). Kudos for compression.

Some good replies. Yep, maybe it does a full install creating a file structure on the HDD as opposed to the 360 which installs a disc image. Which would make sense. Forza 3 required an install of Disc 2 on the 360 and IIRC it was just a disc image so was only a few minutes to do. So it would lead me to think that it's just the way the systems work and doing a disc image install on PS3 may not be possible. I'd still happily do a 40 min install though for GT5.

Well the 360's drive isn't that much faster than the PS3's, in terms of bit rate...
The average read rate for the 360 on a DVD is: SL 10.25MB/s; DL 7.93MB/s
The constant read rate for the PS3 on a Blu-ray is 9MB/s

As indefinite already pointed out, the realistic speed between the ps3s bluray drive and the 360s dvd drive is pretty similar. It probably takes longer on the ps3 because of encryption or decryption.

@Styli I'm not sure because my PS3 also takes a lot longer to do Title updates than my 360 does sometimes it is annoying. Also downloadable games take longer to download on playstation as well, there has to be some kind of drive write speed thing in the OS.

I wonder why it takes 40 minutes to install 6.3GB. Most 5GB game install takes between 5 to 10 minutes.

FALLOUT 3 had this "option" too right?? i add the quote marks because it wasn't really an option, it installed it the first time you loaded a new game.

I've never liked Gran Turismo and I probably won't like this one. But it sure looks cool. I'm more of a "Need For Speed" or "Ridge Racer" player, and yes, I know that makes me instantly lame. I just wish I had the skillz to play GT, it actually saddens me.

@Milf Biggenson same here (HUGE Ridge Racer fanatic). i'll be getting GT5 for sure and might do a few online races when I know i'll get crushed against the "pros"

@Milf Biggenson You know you could just play the game, over and over again. I hear it's great for learning something new. Just act like it's a real car, and you'll instantly become better. Build skill from there.

@Milf Biggenson Just get it for the single player. You'll pick it up soon enough I was the same as you until I picked up Forza. Realistic racers are the smiz once you get used to them.

I felt the exact same about how brutally I played previous sim racers (i.e. GT5) but last week I picked up a Driving Force GT wheel and holy $#!^ did racing games ever get better in my books. I don't know how I ever played racing games before using a controller. I highly recommend picking one up if you want to really experience GT5.
I got mine for $69.00 and later picked up Prologue and Dirt 2. So far everyone that has tried it has been blown away (even my 60 year old dad). In my opinion, if you can drive a car--you will undoubtedly be able to drive decently in a sim using a racing wheel. Can't wait to try it on GT5.

No, it doesn't offer the option to install "while you play" it offers the option to install parts of the data on-demand.
No matter what option you choose you're going to be waiting around for 50 minutes.

Woah steady on here. Installs?? Erm, shouldn't we just wait until the physical media is in our grubby mitts before discussing any of this? We still have another (counts them) 4 days to go before it drops and there could be another delay or something as Polyphony decide to add the voices of the Top Gear lads or put in some spaceships to race against. You know it could happen.
