I've been interested in this ever since it was announced at E3 2009. I've always adored that mythological element in the style of Zelda for these RPGs.

That being said, I need to learn more on the controls. My hands don't exactly see eye to eye with the DS button layout at times. And I've seen a lot of fantastic games on my DS that get watered down because of a sore hand.

I'll keep my eye out for this one.

@Shadowbender Maybe this will help you, in a previous interview with one of the co-creators of golden sun he said "We have designed Dark Dawn with the mindset that touch screen and traditional button controls should be basically interchangeable,"

Quality vs quantity argument. I'd rather have an awesome 40 hour game than a 80 hour one filled with padding.

Or an incredible 20 hour one over both.

And I can stand outside a G20 conference ranting about the demon lizards who secretly control all the member countries for hours and hours, but afterward I think I could hardly claim I contributed to a meaningful discussion about the emerging global marketplace.

Do you read game reviews for insight into the experience and design, or to listen to a fanboy big-up it in the hopes he gets a quote pulled for the GOTY edition box art? Only one of those approaches is "saying anything."

And I'm not just saying this to be a troll (okay, I am a little). But Joystiq is unique in their ethical resistance to the all-consuming power of the Industry PR Death Machine. But if the product of that integrity is writing this poor, why should we care anyway?

Valid points.

That said, "solid RPG" is one of the better ways to describe Golden Sun. Original? Hell no. But the quality is definitely there.

You get the gaming press you ask for. And if the gaming press you want to ask for is an overwrought feature list peppered with nebulous assertions of quality (or lack thereof) with absolutely no analysis of *why* any of it is "solid" (or any definition of what that actually means), then all the power to you.

But in five years when you're playing Manshooter 3: The shooter of man and wondering why there's no more originality in the field, you're only going to have these cheerleaders to blame.

For what it's worth, Rock, I completely agree that I generally read game reviews "for insight into the experience and design" (or I would like to), but I also understand that game magazines (and blogs, for that matter) don't necessarily review games in this manner, probably because game magazines (and blogs) like making money.

As far as reviews go, Mitchell's did just what I'd expect a blog's review to do, which is give a rather general idea of what the game is like, what it shares with other games in its ilk/series, what kind of art direction it has,&c &c. Since this isn't by Tim Rogers or a similar member of the "experience and design" elite, I'm satisfied.

This is completely a "cool story, bro," but Golden Sun is actually the game that made me stop not using default names. I named Issac "Alex" after myself, and spent the rest of the game assuming that the in-game Alex always had the same name as your character. D'oh.

I think this is the best review Ive read.

Thanks for letting me know you found 65 Djinni.

I know I always KNEW that there would be a secret dungeon in this one just like in GS and GSII.... But with no review making any mention of anything of the sort or giving me any idea how much of the game they saw... I just kinda had to assume they just didnt find it.

The GS games have always been 'easy', you could always get through the normal encounters just spamming normal attack.... Until you get to the secret dungeon/bosses.

but I know for a fact there is no way a 65 djinni file can get to the secret dungeon.... 65 is a damn good amount for a first runtrhough, I think I had 68 for my first runtrhough of TLA... but you need at LEAST 72 (assuming 8 characters with 9 djinni each like the precious game) to find where golden Sun takes the kid gloves off. And that thought makes me happy.

I remember reviews saying TLA was easier than GS. And maybe they were right what with a party of eight... At least until you took the secret bosses into account, and the secret dungeon. Dullahan destroyed the ghost pirate.

GSIII does have a secret dungeon. I dont know because I dont have the game... but I KNOW... Because I know the first two so well. And if it follows the pattern, it might just blow dullahan out of the water.

I did hear a lot of reviews mention this one, like the first one, takes a LONG time to get going... WHile a lot of reviews complained about it, I like it.

I dont want to be handed a world to save as soon as I flip on the power. Chrono trigger comes to mind. I didnt even know the world was in danger until a good long while into the game.

Haven't finished this game yet, and it's been a great experience, however I have to agree with the difficulty:

it has been too damn easy... random encounters are "attack attack attack", and while bosses can endure lots of hits and even Lv. 4 summons, they won't even scratch your chars.. haven't even used revive once, heck, if I use more than one healthy wind or cure psynergy, thats a lot

on the other side, exploring every town is so damn satisfying, there are a lot of clever hidden paths to encounter new items and djinnis
