Super Mario All Stars was in the charts over there? Bloody hell, that sets a really bad precedent...

I'm excited at how well western companies are doing, especially European companies. I LOVE Japanese games, they got me into video games. But even in my favorite Japanese games, I find myself rolling my eyes. Sometimes, the cutscenes just don't translate over into english and no amount of professional teams of Japanese/English translators will fix it.

Heck, FFXIII is a perfect example.

I never understand this numbers. if the p.c. sells this amount on steam then the call it a failure, piracy, etc....
But if it sells this on xbox then it´s a success...... even for japan those numbers seem very low and more for the ps3 which has a bigger audience in japan..... but for consoles they always call this numbers success.......

I guess it's official. Call of Duty has the potential to take over the industry (if not the world). How long before even Pokemon and Monster Hunter Get delayed because Call of Duty is releasing the same month?

Unlikely, at least for Pokemon. They sort of have a set release schedule. Japan in September, US in March. CoD is a franchise that strives its hardest to be out for November 11 each year.

Does Microsoft charge for XBox Live in Japan? They shouldn't, they need every edge they can get over there.

Yup they do and I have to admit, it is total trash! Seriously, make a Japanese account and look at everything, it is worse then the Wii on a bad day.

I don't know if I'd call Black Ops a major cultural phenomenon. Star Wars was a major cultural phenomenon. Black Ops is a popular video game. Then again, I suppose only time will tell.

@Mr Esc is the namesarcasm is my

I think it would need to make an appearance in something outside the normal market share. Video games being referenced in a cartoon parody magazine is pretty typical. CoD being referenced on Sex and the City or the Food Network would prove its a major cultural phenomenon.

Nice to see you're judging a game you haven't played based on false assumptions.

That's to be expected from gaming forum denizens, unfortunately. The ones who aren't complete idiots are in the minority, that much is certain.

If you've played Cod4, you've pretty much played - 4,W@W, MW2, and Black Ops

considering it's an fps and it's a sequel to COD games it's very safe to assume that this doesn't have much strategy in it. It's like saying in a final fantasy topic that you're disliking games that don't have hardcore quick action. You may not know anything about the sequel, but you already know how the game is going to be, even if it is better than the last one.

@Tereso I wouldn't even play that kinda game. To much thinking makes my head hurt. 

As someone who has finished the campaign, I think I'm qualified to say that there's nothing even remotely resembling strategy in Black Ops. The hill in the Khe San level was a nightmare of trial-and-error.

Sad to see such an unoriginal game do well. It's a good game, but why not just buy COD4? Almost an identical game.

@GuardianLegend

Yeah, the Japanese game market absolutely HATES unoriginal sequels.

Except for Pokemon 36, Monster Hunter 27, Final Fantasy XV, and Dragon Quest 22.

Other than that, they're all about original games.

@GuardianLegend they're both about unoriginal games....

So it basically has everything to do with yours. You say you're sad to see it do so well and he sarcastically makes the point that it's not surprising that it does well seeing as how many unoriginal sequels the japanese eat up.

@chimpsmith If only they could be like us enlightened Western kings and play such brilliant timeless games like Madden 2011

Being a sequel has nothing to do about a sense of originality

@wcarnation I never said we didn't have tons of sequels like that, but I was explaining that guy's point.

My problem isn't with sequels being unoriginal, it's with entire new series' being completely unoriginal.

128k in Japan is actually great. Numbers in Japan are different so what looks as a failure over here, is actually a success over there. Glad to see the Japanese open up to other games other than their own.
