It's a God send. My 3-yr-old is interested in games now. If I start her off on this TV combo, I can give her the satisfaction of going to GameStop and buying her 2-3 games at a time because they're so cheap!

That's kinda cool. I wonder if the PS2 part is detachable somehow because if the laser burned out (or some other problem that broke the PS2) it would be really annoying to have to replace the entire TV just for another base.

This is why combo devices (more commonly, DVD/TV combos) are a bad idea - if one part breaks, it likely can't be replaced. And you can't upgrade just one of the items.

I know what you mean. My girlfriend recently had her TV/DVD player die on her. Luckily she had the extended warranty so she got a new, better TV out of it.

@Ospov - VCR/TV Combos were the biggest pieces of garbage in the history of consumer electronics. If this new TV has half the reliability of those old things, it should be alright.

Maybe I'm just lucky, but I've had a VCR/DVD/TV combo for probably close to 4 or 5 years, maybe more, and I haven't had any problems with it. I know they aren't the most reliable things ever though. I'm still hoping this PS2 TV holds up for the people that buy it though.

@Ospov -My sister had one before LCD's came around, and it crapped out. It was fixed under warranty, and then almost immediately crapped out again. You've gotten a good model if it has lasted that many years.

"Many of us can't play PS2 games on our PS3s right now,". It's nice to see that not everyone has given up hope, but it seems that if we don't have backwards compatibility by now, we are never going to have it. At this point, I think I'd buy a PS2 if it had an HDMI port in it. Why must you do this to us, Sony?

I love my PS3 with partial BC. I got my money worths despite it costing me $620+

Yeah, that's kind of weird. I waited a bit too long and got a fat ps3 that doesn't support ps2 games. I think everyone in my group got a little extra shafted.

Price gets brought up every time. EU, and later NA PS3s, had SOFTWARE BC. They took it out because they wanted higher PS3 game sales, not because it cost anything. (Hardware BC costs, Software would not.)

@wormania : they didn't have just software emulation though. There was still an extra chip on it. Cutting it saved Sony about 10 dollars a console in manufacturing cost if I remeber correctly.

Yeah, the PS3 games sales is part of it. But it the games weren't completely emulated; there was still some ps2 hardware in there. One thing i noticed with my partial BC system was that the fan went to full power when ever a PS2 game was loaded. It was louder than a lot of PS3 games i had. I think that it just used a lot of power. The upscaling is a nice feature though. Many games do look somewhat better.

He's right.
It still contained one of the PS2 processors, it just emulated the other one.

And chrisgrant, I hate to break it to you, but PS2 B/C on a 60gb isn't HD.

PS2 BC has barely affected me at all. I got the MGS4 80GB which I think was the last model with BC of any kind. I barely play any of my old PS2 games. Sometimes Battlefront 2 or some Destroy All Humans, but that's it.

Wow, that is cool. I would hope that this kind of trend keeps up in the future. Imagine 10-15 years from now having a 360, PS3, or Wii programmed directly into your TV. I certainly wouldn't mind having that since I'll have an archive with old games that I might want to randomly play one day.

I wouldn't kind having an emulation service on the TV either. WiiWare, PSN, and XBLA TVs? Why not? Put a usb plug and ethernet on the TV and you're set.

It's nifty, but a 22" class sceen is awfully small. Surprised it's not at least a 27", though I suppose this is perfect for a kid's bedroom, office or dorm setup.

PS2 era graphics are best viewed on a good CRT TV. Looking at them through an LCD display generally makes them look much more low res and lowpoly than they should. So then, welding a PS2 to an LCD TV? Ehhh.

Exactly. I wanted the PS3 to retain backward compatibility until I saw how terribly it did it. If Sony could make a unit that rivaled PS2 PC emulation, where a game is cleaned up dramatically, upscaled properly, and all that jazz, it would be a worthy investment indeed.

Of course, there's no money in that so what we'll get instead are crappy ports that barely do anything better than before and people will buy it simply because of the nostalgic bomb it gives them instead of what should be an improved experience.

I'd probably pay at least $150 for a system that could be a bug free, high resolution, PS2 emulator.

Neat idea, although as many have noted PS2 games will probably not look too hot on an HDTV. Kind of makes you wonder why they didn't do this years ago.

so they're still making the PS2's exotic CPU+GPU? Why can't they stuff it into a PS3 now that it is cheaper, or come out with a dongle...not that I care, I got my 60gig for less than $300....back when they were still in stores.

I disagree, that's not exactly common knowledge. Unless you're a consumer who's done a lot of research/shopping for TV's, you probably wouldn't understand that little tid-bit.

Having said that, what the heck is the point of a 22" tv?
