Kinect Hacks: DaVinci drawing interface, flying machine

Two more crazy Kinect hacks have been captured on video, making a nice thematic pairing. First, Razorfish's DaVinci software has been ported to Kinect, allowing users to draw onscreen by making gestures, and then interact with those drawn objects Crayon Physics-style.

Second, researchers at UC Berkeley's Hybrid Systems lab mounted a Kinect on an autonomous quadracopter, allowing the machine to sense its surroundings in 3D. You know who else invented a crazy helicopter thing? That's right -- Da Vinci! We told you there was a theme.

Check out both videos after the break, and ponder the question: if Kinect can now fly around on its own, why would it want to stay home and play MotionSports with you?

Something like that DaVinci software would actually make the kinect interesting. This helicopter is a sick demo but not as useful in actual games

This has nothing to do with games. Kinect hacks are about the applications of the hardware outside of it's purpose, being gaming.

Lol sweet. Loving the helicopter based one. Amazing the amount of cool uses it has outside of casual games.

And looking at the drawing software it reminds me. How long until they develop a game based around a hero with telekenetic powers???

@styleznma And I guess that means that the Star Wars game currently in development for Kinect, that allows you to play as a Jedi with full control of your force powers with Kinect, is aimed at Wii people too?

That flying thing is terrifying.

Kinect is actually scared of heights and terrified.

Da Vinci thing could make for a fun XBLA game, Kinect needs something fun and clever like that.

And I don't want Kinect to be my pilot anytime soon.

Wonder if MS & devs are watching these videos. They could really use some innovation for Kinect.

Man, Microsoft missed out.

They could have implemented the kinect to their operating system instead of making it xbox only.

I don't think they've missed out on anything. All these "hackers" are still *buying* Kinects & websites can't get enough of the projects that are being done with new reports are being made every other day on every tech/gaming website (free press anyone?). Beyond that, people are all doing tons of free research & footwork on what will clearly eventually be released as a PC device ("Kinect for Windows...").
It's all win / win for them really.

Rumors are they plan on doing something in windows 8 with it.

Microsoft needs to pick up on this. I would have so much fun drawing things... on my TV!

I'm trying to be optimistic about these robots, but the most I can get out is "We're doomed."

I do. Come 2012, providing we make it that far Kinect is going to be scary good.

During the "bounce" demo, it looks like the hands are crapping. A lot.

That helicopter is a little too close to Skynet air squads for me to be comfortable.

I'd be hard pressed coming up with a mature comment for the first video @ 0:30.

That aside, I can see plenty gameplay opportunities in it.

The drawing/Physics project got me thinking about superhero games for the kinect. Be kinda cool to throw a car at a bad guy using your hands like a real superhero with telekinetic powers.

I can't wait to feel like Guy Pierce and Russell Crowe.

i totally forgot kinect was supposed to be about gaming.
