@PreGHz ...so? This update adds nothing, oh except bring up public awareness that the PS3 can be hacked! Not sure why they even bother trying to keep running these security patches, didn't work so well with the PSP, DS, and Wii.

@mywhitenoise

But isn't it working well with the PS3?

Sure, it's possible to hack a PS3, but it's just not taking off at all like it has with the 360, the other Playstations, or the DS.

That kinda proves your point is incorrect, doesn't it?

It is annoying that it takes a while to download the OS, but I understand this is because they way Sony does it is more secure (rewriting the entire OS instead of patching it, a la Windows). It is annoying that I have mandatory installs all the time, too. It is annoying that a few people seem to suffer system problems afterwards, too.

But it is good to know that Sony's doing all they can to keep developers making money, which ultimately is food on the tables of hard working families. Pirates can go to hell. I am very annoyed that I lost Other OS, but I know the blame is on game pirates.

Stay the course, Sony. It's been really annoying, but at this point, you might as well continue doing 100%, just out of principle. The pirates would love it if you just gave up, but I'd rather you release some kind of game hacking system surreptitiously, with a pirated game, that bricked every system it touched.

I had to install it about 2 hours ago.

No new features it seems. The download is pretty quick. The install is as slow as ever though.

@spin cycle Yep nothing for the average, legitimate user. It blocks the downgrade exploit for PSJailbreak.

Pisses me off we're stuck as collateral damage, and neither Sony nor the PSJailbreak team seem to care.

Ok good cause I was scared there was a breach in the interdimensional firewall that would cause all the bad guys I've ever killed to escape from video game character hell and come crawling out of my PS3 to come seek their revenge on me. I can sleep soundly tonight.

I find it sad that mods deleted the comment which made the Ghostbusters reference. I'm sure the guy meant no harm. And those of us who remembered the line got a good chuckle out of it. :)

See that's what I thought it was, but I haven't seen the movie in ages so I wasn't sure if it was or not. And now it looks like I just commented to no one :(

Plus I didn't take it as a serious insult anyway. I kinda wish the mods would just **** out the part that needs to be censored if that's why they deleted it.

I've read a lot of comments online complaining about the PS3's mandatory updates, but they've honestly never bothered me. In fact, until just now while thinking about it, I've never noticed that it has more than my 360 does.

They're very short and only come ever couple of months? Can someone explain to me why this is such a big deal?

Xbox doesn't have big updates that you must install before you sign into Live. It only has them for specific games. There was 1 big update for Xbox dashboard late last year.

However on PS3 if you want to sign in on PSN, you have to update the console plus the game itself. It can be a pain if you just want to jump on and play a game real quick and there's a mandatory update.

@Jaclo Compared to he 360, they're not short, and are much more frequent. There has been 7 updates this year to the PS3, and 2 to the 360. (According to wikipedia.org)

Also, the 360 updates usually bring actual features, and are beneficial to me. Updates like this are just a waste of my time and a hassle.

Well, after commenting, I went to do the update. It's already finished. I just don't see the big deal.

I can KINDA understand if you just got home with a new game and want to play it, but five minutes isn't that long of a wait. Just go take that dump you've been holding while it downloads/installs.

Speaking of downloading/installing, why does the PS3 have to do each separately, while the 360 seemingly does it all at once?

@Jaclo There have been instances when people had negative side effects (including "bricking") when installing these updates. It's nothing to do with Sony. It's happened with every major OS and console manufacturer.

If they don't offer you anything new, why would take the risk?

That said, I'm just going to wait a few days before applying the update myself.

@Jaclo People complain because it's an inconvenience with usually zero benefit to the end user. I pay for my games so the fact that this prevents other people from hacking their PS3's does me no good at all. It'd be like if Kevin Butler prevented me from opening my car door in the morning for 5-15 minutes. He's not cleaning out my car or anything, just standing there telling me I can't use it yet. Sure it's only five minutes... but certainly I could just get in my car and he could stand next to it for 5 minutes later. No! he says, it must be now.

No, a more appropriate analogy would be to say it's like Kevin Butler once every two months stopping you from putting gas in your car while installs a chip in your gas cap which prevents you from stealing gasoline. Since you're not a gasoline thief anyway, it would seem that it doesn't effect you. But, since he does it for each and every car on the road, it reduces gas theft, which in turn keeps gas stations from having to increase costs to combat gas theft, which has a positive impact on your wallet. It's just transparent. Still saves you money in the end.

My problem is that with such seemingly minor updates, why do they not just save them up for a while and release fewer patches with more things like the 360?

It is a minor issue but it is still worth complaining about because it just seems dumb.

Well, all, for four dollars and some change per month, playstation plus offers the benefit of having all updates (system and game) download automatically at a time of your choosing. Seems if it's such an inconvenience that you have to bitch and moan every time an update comes out, you'd just look in your couch for the $4.17.

I mean...unless you're simply the type that just likes to whine. *shrug*

@Jaclo It's not a big deal. it's just annoying. For me, I play my 360 almost each day, and rarely see updates. When they happen they are super fast. But i mostly use my PS3 as a bluray player, and play games less often, which is why it SEEMS like each time I want to enjoy my PS3, I have to wait for a tediously long update. Plus the game update.

But, I refuse to pay for Plus, so I'll gladly live with that minor inconvenience. I'm otherwise completely happy about my PS3, minus the lack for voice chat without Plus.

If it's really a problem get PS+ Not only do you get automatic overnight patches, where the PS3 turns on downloads any system patches and games updates, applies them all then turns off, you also get $400 worth of free content every year...

Far better value than Xbox Live, and the same price.

Actually the jailbreak was closed with FW3.42 and spoofing is also been closed by a server update that check for spoofing.

This update is to stop people from downgrading to the jailbreak-able 3.41FW.

Ps there might be a 3.50 jailbreak but that could be fake....
