Activision still pushing Shred, believes Tony Hawk (the man) has staying power
40
Tony Hawk Shred's bad start at retail still has Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing, doing damage control. In a recent interview with IndustryGamers, the executive stated that Tony Hawk, as a figure, has "relevance and tremendous appeal for people." Hirshberg described him as a "lasting icon," and explained that the company needs to make "smart moves in terms of innovation to see if [it] can recapture people's imaginations" with the game franchise.
While Hirshberg feels it's too early to say that Shred fell crotch first onto the metal handrail it was trying to grind, Activision will "keep the pedal to the metal" through the holiday season, hoping to score a hit with kids and potential gift-givers.
Clearly that Vans boost across the asphalt (proper metaphor!) does not include any focus on making sure the game gets reviewed and placed on Metacritic. Developed by hard-hit Robomodo, it has only one professional review listed across three platforms. NPD results will be out this Thursday, so we'll see then if Tony Hawk Shred picked up from the 3,000 sales it had in October.

So, after this fails, will they make an excuse, then make a Tony Hawk Shred Grind Olley and say that one will hit it big?

I miss #2, I played the that until my controllers broke on 2 different platforms. Everything since then sort of lost it's magic for me.
The new board based games are just trying to go after Skate from a different angle, and the sales pretty much prove no one cares, and especially no one cares when it costs a ton extra to buy in with a peripheral that doesn't really work...

I've been to several different gamestops since this game released, and all of them had stacks of these things cluttering up the store, I'm not certain they could give these things away. Way to keep up the poker face though!

I think it really comes down to the peripheral. I've read numerous places that it just doesn't work well. Make it optional or get rid of it and more people will jump on board, so to speak.

The problem is right in that statement. They believe that having Tony Hawk attached to a game is what will sell it, when in reality people care very little about that and would gladly take a good game in it's place whether or not it had celebrities attached to it.
I think skate. is a great example.. while it does have pro skaters throughout the game, they're not the main focus and the core gameplay is just plain fun.

Wait a game that's old as dirt has yet to be reviewed? If I were Activision I would accept that stupid skateboard as a gimmick, take 2 years off, and develop a bad ass Tony Hawk game with the old control scheme.
It's never too late to make a comeback Mr. Pro Skater. It just might be too early.

@CBA25 Activision knows it better than most. Infinity Ward and Treyarch each get 2 years to develop the next Call of Duty, Starcraft 2 took something like 10 years to show up, and it's been 2 years since an expansion to WoW was released. Don't get me started on Diablo III

Distinction needs to be made here. Activision just recently took control of Blizzard ("recently" in the scheme of things). The development cycle of Blizzard's biggest titles can't really be taken into consideration in this example. However, Blizzard's original intention was two more expansions for WoW after Cataclysm - at least, that was their intention before the acquisition - so if we see more than that, we know whose influence that is.
But you're right about CoD. That is the best idea a publisher can have, in my opinion. It is more expensive, but ultimately you maintain your branding, can continue a certain level of quality, and have the opportunity to be more experimental with your franchise. This last point is more observable with the Metal Gear and Final Fantasy franchises, which both maintain multiple releases by different teams. EA and Activision are great examples of the other, less inventive benefits, what with Madden's two development teams and CoD's

Activision definitely needs to get behind Tony Hawk, he's happening, he's now and his game is all the rage!! Wait a sec... Oops. I just came out of a 10 year coma and my wife tells me it's 2010. Sorry, ignore that first part!

For the love of God Activision, just remake the THPS, THUG series in HD and put them up on XBLA and the Playstation Store and rebuild the name that you sullied.

If they'd just start cranking out arcade downloads of Pro Skater through Underground 2, they'd finally make money off the franchise again.

Tony Hawk had appeal and relevance a long time ago to me. Now he is just a guy who is forced on us nonstop and just works to sell products with his name on it. Hell, I even have to hear him on Faction radio on Sirius - which is honestly one of the worst radio shows ever. He offers no entertaining discussion whatsoever. Really - stop pushing Hawk on us so much and maybe he could become interesting again. Right now he has overstayed his welcome.

I've come to think Activision as having much more shrewd business sense than this.
You've got to know when to hold them, and when to fold them.

They may not be 'official' numbers but VGChartz is showing that it's shipped right around 100k units combined since release. That's the sum of all 3 systems. Incidentally, it's sold 3x more on Wii than it has on 360 or PS3. Either way, if those numbers are even close to the truth I'd say the Tony Hawk franchise is still in very big trouble

Yeah, which is why I said 'If these numbers are even close to the truth'. I'm not sure where their figures come from either, I suppose we'll find out on Thursday what the situation is, but having seen tons of these things littering shelves at multiple retailers I'd say it's pretty obvious that sales are not going well at all.
Now I think I'll boot up Tony 2 and remember the glory days for about 5 minutes, then hold a funeral for the series. :)

It's absolutely ridiculous that games like this do not get reviewed, regardless of how bad they are. Many sites seem to review and skip reviews for the same games. We have enough Black Ops reviews. It's obvious that Activision won't send any copies to prominent game review sites, but, yes, some sites should take the hit and buy, or at least rent, the game to review it. All games should be reviewed (even Wii shovelware) so there is an accurate and complete record for the history books.

I know bro, was just clarifying myself that I don't put much stock in their numbers either. Sometimes they're.....in the ballpark. Sometimes not. Thanks for saying that though. :)

I'd assume tony hawk would have staying power so long as you strap the franchise down and beat it mercilessly.
Not a sight of pity in activisions eyes as they churn out crap after crap squeals not understanding the love of the franchise was from its fun and goofiness.
You'd think a online Tony Hawk 2 or 3 with open world skating would have a nice vast skating community. Watching each other do tricks or skating through the city. But once again that's all just in my mind. I just might be a crazy fellow here with these thoughts.
