We just saw Criterion's creative director Craig Sullivan at the launch for Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit a few weeks ago, and so when he showed up on this weekend's VGAs red carpet, we congratulated him on the game and its addictive Autolog feature. "It's been phenomenal," he agreed. "It does change the way people play. People are playing the same event ten, fifteen, fifty times, and you don't get that in racing games. It's a very big deal for us and we're really glad that people are embracing it and having fun."
The social service doesn't do what most implementations have so far done and share stats out to Twitter or Facebook. Instead, it keeps the sharing inside the game, and Sullivan says that's the way Criterion designed it. "You get information about Need for Speed when you're playing Need for Speed," he says. "That was really key to us." Criterion is also seeing in-game comments used more than expected, though it "usually degenerates into a load of swearing."
As for what's next, Sullivan says DLC is the current focus, though Criterion wouldn't mind making either another Need for Speed or Burnout title, or any other genre for that matter. "We made Black before, and everybody wants us to make Black 2. As long as it's fun and it suits the strengths of the studio, we're interested in making any kind of game. We always joke and say we'll make a game about jelly, or make a game about horses, or tennis or whatever it is. If it fun and it fits with what Criterion stands for, then we'll pretty much make anything."

Only if they can figure out a way to integrate the crash mode from the previous games. That's the only thing I miss from them. Really really miss.

The attitudes of Criterion and Naughty Dog are where their great games start. I bet it is a blast to be employed by them.

My only gripe with Autolog is that you can't post your photos to an image hosting service like Flickr, or even Facebook, or one of the many services Twitter users have available. I'd love to show off some of my shots to people who don't play the game.

You can save the images to your hard drive from the website and then upload them to wherever.

I stand by my personal belief that Criterion are the greatest game development studio of all time, with Naughty Dog and Rockstar tied for second

I've been following Criterion since the first Burnout came out, and I've loved all their games. They honestly know how to make fun games. I complained about Paradise before release because they were going to actually try making an open-world game, but they did it right. I thought they were going to screw up NFS, but they made it better. Seriously, whatever game they announce, I know it will rock.
So make Burnout Revenge 2 !!!!!!!!

I would have bought this game at full price on day 1 if EA hadn't spammed me about it TWICE after I played the demo.
Autolog seemed great until EA showed me it's really an excuse to build up a database of people to spam.

@spin cycle Do you realize that you can block email addresses so they cant spam? Did you also accidentally click the box that said it was ok for them to spam you when you played the demo? It's a shame that ignorance is going to stop you from playing a wonderful game.

@ChrisSTL No, I didn't accidentally click the box that says I want to receive spam from them.
I would say it's a shame that more people don't feel the way I do, because if they did, EA wouldn't dare spam us because they would know it would kill their sales.
Treat your customers as well as you can, not as poorly as you think you can get away with.

I would love to see the Criterion tennis game where the players are horses and the court is jelly.
