Mass Effect 2 on PS3 outfitted with Mass Effect 3 engine
92
Mass Effect 2 will have "improved graphics" on PlayStation 3, BioWare claims on the most recent company podcast. The improvement isn't simply a benefit of the PS3 version being released a full year later, but also stems from the fact that the PS3 version employs Mass Effect 3's version of Unreal Engine 3. "We actually created the engine for Mass Effect 3 and used that to make Mass Effect 2 on PS3. So we took the content, the story, and all of the other assets that made up Mass Effect 2, and we put it into the Mass Effect 3 engine," producer Jesse Houston explained.
He added that the controls have been update with the PS3 controller in mind ("you can switch it back to the old Xbox [layout] if you'd like"), and the patches that ended up on 360 and PC will be "rolled up" into the PS3 version (faster planet scanning ahoy!). Also, if you were worried about a possible launch delay for whatever reason, the BioWare folks noted that the game on PS3 has "gone gold" (read: it's done). And if you're still on the fence about ME2, well, you're a crazy person ... but you'll also be happy to know that a PSN demo arrives on December 21.

Nothing much really transferred over you know. I mean you remake like the two major decisions through a speech part segment at the beginning of ME2 with Miranda.

Not to sound like a fanboy (although I know I will), but this is the first time in a long time that I've been jealous of something on the PS3 that is cross-platform.
On a side note, what about the PC version?

You do realise that Mirrors Edge, as well as Dead Space and a quite a few other games, were developed FOR the PS3 and then ported to 360. So those games are better on the PS3. In fact, most good cross platform games these days are developed for the PS3 and then ported. Makes more sense.
And ME2 has been out on PC for months. If you asking if they will update it like the PS3 one then it wont happen. They arnt just upping the texture sizes or something, they have moved all of ther assets onto a new engine basically. Its not an easy thing to do.

PS3 owners get the best version of the game this time. Of course, Im still glad I got it on Xbox 360, because by now Id have heard all about the plot and that would ruin a lot of the story.

Wow, you know, you're right. I remember back in the prior gen that most games were developed first on the PS2, and then ported to the XBOX and Gamecube with lower res texture, lower framerate, and less features. Right?....................
Oh wait. No that's not right.....I mixed that up huh?
They ported to the Xbox and GC from PS2. And (the Xbox 1 at least) pretty much always ended up w/ the better product - higher res, better framerate, etc..
Point is, porting from the PS3 to the 360 does NOT mean that the port is the inferior version. It is often done that way because it's EASIER and more COST EFFECTIVE for the devs than the opposite. It's much more difficult to develop first for the Xbox and then port to the PS3. Traditionally, it was more difficult when you were converting a port from a more powerful system to a less powerful system (ie - porting from Xbox to the PS2). It took a more powerful system to handle the bloat from porting code from a different architecture.
In the case of PS3 and 360, that point is now largely moot. Many dev tools these days (ie - UE3) are able to create games for both PS3 and 360 in parallel, with each being properly optimized for their respective systems, without porting. That's why multiplatform games tend to be so similar.
As far as ME2 on PS3, it's awesome to hear that Bioware's doing this. I wish more devs put that much effort into bringing existing games to new platforms. It's clear that they expect this to be a top seller on PS3, as it should. AMAZING game.

If being developed with a specific platform as lead doesnt offer some opportunity for improvement over a ported platform then why would any developer trumpet it as a feature? Just say it's developed on a neutral platform and that all versions are equal, because it's not always the case. In some cases these days with hyper powered consoles, yes, the differences are going to be minimal, but in others perhaps not. It means something at least to the developers. In the end maybe it's just the level of optimization or something the end consumer has no awareness of but there is a reason they say it and in some of those cases the evidence is apparent.

@Billlop I feel like I remembered hearing that the PS3 game would allow saves from the PC version to be carried over, if that's true then that sounds like a plan. However, if it's not, you should definitely soldier on with ME2 PC, the decision transferring is one of the best parts of ME2

As a 360 owner, this is getting kind of annoying. Didn't Bioshock do something like this too? I've already bought your game (and I bought 4 copies of ME2 to get all of the preorder bonuses), why can't I get some updated graphics and shit.
Posted: Dec 16th 2010 6:50PM TheDarkWayne said
@Rhamsey whoa? 4 copies? You must have like, returned them sans bonus, right? I just bought most of the bonus cards of ebay, but because of EA/Cerberus Network's ultra terrible account linking, lost all of them when I transferred by HD data to a slim 360

I returned one, sold one, gave one as a gift and kept the last one (collectors edition) for myself.
Also, i just updated to a slim 360 on Monday, and although I couldn't download the ME2 stuff from the download history, when I popped the game back in it lets me do it from their menu.

You got to play the game a year before PS3 users did. It would be unfair if the game was brought to the PS3 with no enhancements whatsoever.
Sorry to pick on you specifically, but I've seen this type of comment many times, and it reeks of entitlement. For having to wait as long as they did, PS3 owners are going to get an updated version of the game. You've had the opportunity and the privilege of playing Mass Effect 2 for a year now. It's akin to being upset when a DVD is released of a movie with additional scenes and effects; companies want to give those who waited or were otherwise unable to see the original some incentive to check it out now.

I'm just butthurt about Case Zero. I really wanted to play that and my 360 is on the fritz. Plus PS3 is going to miss out on the initial New Vegas DLC.
But let's not forget awesome arcade classics like Super Meat Boy and Comic Jumper. Sure would be great to play those!!

Sorry to pick on you specifically, but I've seen this type of response to that argument many times, and it reeks of entitlement and hypocracy.
You believe you are entitled to a better product because you chose to wait for it to come to a console it wasn't initially slated for? And how dare someone say that those improvements be offered to the early adopters... the people that made the game the best seller it is.
That is ludicrous. I understand where you are coming from but get off your high horse. You are no better.

Well this is actually kind of disappointing, because the jump from ME2 on the 360 to ME2 on the PS3 graphically isn't as impressive as the jump from ME1 to ME2 on the 360 was.

That's just a symptom of a leap in tech and production value from ME1 to ME2. I don't think the jump from 2 to 3 will be as pronounced as the jump from 1 to 2.
I don't really see how it's disappointing. In fact, you need to explain that deduction and why that makes this news disappointing because that doesn't make much sense. I could just be daft.

It's disappointing because I would have hoped that each iteration of their engine would lead to a similar jump in graphical fidelity, but it seems (from videos of ME2 on the PS3) that the difference between the engines for ME2 and ME3 is barely noticeable.

ME2 is a gorgeous looking game as is.
They could just make ME3 using the same engine and it would still look as good as ME2 did (nearly) 2 years earlier.
