Lost Levels, a website dedicated to pulling unreleased video games out of the void of obscurity, recently obtained a pretty epic find: An alleged prototype build of the original, Famicom version of The Legend of Zelda. What's different about this early build? Well, apparently, while the retail version of Zelda was responsible for crushing the spirits of many a lesser gamer, this prototype build was designed to be played by sweet, little babies.
The difficulty of the early version of the game appears to be fairly reduced, as the prototype features a much more liberal rate of rupee distribution and an easier palette of enemies compared to the retail release, as evidenced by the screenshot comparison above (prototype on the left). If you've got the right emulator, you can download and play the prototype right now -- or, if you're not in the dungeon-diving mood, you can check more details about the Zelda prototype on The Cutting Room Floor wiki.

@Co - Or something? You can get the GBA releases pretty cheap - that with an old gamecube & the gba player work pretty well - not as cheap as WiiWare, but there's no need to kill in that case.

As someone who is firmly against piracy, when it comes to systems that are long gone, and especially games that were never released here (Zelda FDS), I don't see it as that bad. It's not like you are stealing a sale from this.
And adding in the fact that this is a PROTOTYPE of a game unreleased here, I don't see it as that bad.
I own Perfect Dark. If someone were to give me a copy of the beta ROM, would I feel bad? No. I own the final product. Would I go distributing it to a massive about of people? No. Nor would I go sell the beta ROM. So if you happen to own a version of the original Zelda, that should make you feel less bad.
And I don't think a story about it would be that unethical. Unless you can somehow convince Nintendo to sell you a developmental floppy of a Japanese-only system with the prototype of one of their biggest hits on it.

Ah, I hated those blue knights almost as much as the blue warlocks or wizards or whatever they were.

Alleged of Zelda.

Since this is an alleged prototype version, it is no more ethically gray to play this than a hacked rom of Super Mario Brothers. Even if it weren't, most games from the NES era could realistically be placed into the category of abandonware, and you shouldn't feel bad about emulating them (Zelda may be an exception. Is it on the Wii?)
