Kinect Hacks: World of Warcraft gets moving
40
Avid World of Warcraft players are always looking for that special something to incrementally boost their in-game performance -- little did they know that the greatest boost wouldn't come in the form of a legendary item, but rather a motion-detecting Kinect hack from researchers at USC.

hmmm...so, if you can play a game like world of warcraft that requires you to move and use spells and attack and all this stuff, how can you not use kinect for a "core" game? i suppose that only time will tell if codename d and draco and all that stuff will be able to deliver the way a lot of us want them too. pretty cool technology...

@Liquidfingers.
You COULD play a game like this with the Kinect, or you could just use a mouse and keyboard which would be 100x easier. I can't imagine many WoW players standing up and moving around for 10+ hours every day, although it may make a lot of them more fit.
I think it's also a matter of Microsoft selling the Kinect as a casual thing rather than trying actively to make hardcore games out of it.

Oh sorry about that..just read something realy funny! Wel you do know that most core games and especialy World of Warcraft have realy many functions in it?
I would realy like to see Kinect movement on all those functions..but hey...I like your optimism but im afraid you are dreaming ;)

Standing itself won't make them fit, but perhaps making certain actions in game extra hard to perform might.

wow, i didn't think i was gushing with bubbly enthusiasm or anything, but thanks for being a dick about it. seeing as i don't even own a kinect yet, i think enthusiasm is all i can really have for the product. i really WANT something "core" that's "good" to come out for it, and what's wrong with that?

@Liquidfingers Did not mean to come out as a dick on your post, but I actualy thought it was fun to read. That said I have read so many post about people hoping Kinect wil make it's way in to the core games when most of us know the limitations of the system.
Thats why I think its so funny..not that you are a idiot or a dick like me. Its perfectly fine and a good thing to be optimistic about a product.
Happy xmas! :)

Hmmmm...
I could see this working if you could actually make hand positions for specific spells.
Fire ball would be shoryuken.
Ice blast would be RAISE THE ROOF.
...I guess you'd run out of positions fairly quickly...

Kinect hacking is probably one of the best things to come out of the console world in a long, long time... This is pretty awesome though. We'd need a scroll of healing or something to learn all of the techniques... kinda of like the scrolls in Avatar (TV show) to learn bending. That being said though I don't think I'd last in a 3-4 hour raid if I had to gesture flash heal or renew 5000 times.

I can understand the technology being used to help someone in a therapeutic capacity, but I still have yet to see anything that Kinect can do to entice me to purchase it.
If it had potential for more than shovelware and a better sensor and an HD camera as it was previously reported to have and any real, solid use as a gaming peripheral, I might be inclined to feign interest in it.
I take issue with posting anything negative, and for that reason have refrained from posting on anything else Kinect related, but I'm having a really hard time biting my tongue right now. Sorry, I'll go post about something I do like, rainbows and cotton candy.

I actually think this helps prove that Kinect has real promise as a gaming device. These guys just proved that fairly accurate real time movement in a 3d space is realistically possible with Kinect without having to run around your room.
I could see this being applied to something like Madden (I.E. - lean a direction to move your player, left hand pointed to proper receiver and throw motion to pass, palm out motion to tackle/stiff arm, etc.) or any number of 1st/3rd person shooters (I.E. - again, lean to move, one arm to aim/move screen, other hand in closed fist to fire, weapon selection via non aiming arm pump in a set direction, etc.) to make them more immersive once developers start using the potential of this thing.
Also, people forget that no one ever said you couldn't use a controller along with this thing at the same time...

I see where it could be used in some of those games, I just feel that using Kinect in any shooter, be it online or off, will leave you either with a huge disadvantage to those using a traditional controller or will leave you with an inferior game if it is designed to be used with it.
I keep trying to figure out how you would turn, strafe or make other movement actions that wouldn't turn out awkward. You could make an on rails shooter where you only need to look forward, a little to the left and a little to the right, but still it isn't anything I would be interested in.
Madden, while still relevant to some, is something I haven't bothered with in the last 10 years. That too I can see Kinect being useful for, but a slower, dumbed down version separate from the normal release.
I'm sure some people would be interested in something along these lines, but again, I'm speaking of my own likes and interests.

One thing this proves is that a Kinect game doesn't have to be an on rails type game. You can move around it looks pretty easy with different body motions. Performing different actions also looks easy enough to accomplish and could turn a routine event where it was boring fun.

Dont worry guys, I reported him to the WoW GM's for heavy modding.
I loved the first comment in the thread by liquid fingers:
"hmmm...so, if you can play a game like world of warcraft that requires you to move and use spells and attack and all this stuff, how can you not use kinect for a "core" game"
If WoW was an XBOX game, not a PC game, and if the people that made the damn thing had done so for it instead of having some guy hack it, then I could say it was possible. As is, its simply not doing what it was made for. I guess thats the defintion of the word hackers though isnt it? Using tech outside the parameters of its intended use?

The only thing unintended about this is platform choice. In terms of actual purpose however it's doing exactly what it was made for, controlling WoW game play without a physical device. Not as well as a KB/Mouse obviously but hey it's a first step. Applying this to an Xbox game is simply a matter of proper programing by a developer.

Kinect has some neat potential but I sure hope it's not used to use semaphore commands in games.
Isn't this kinda like just wiggling a Wii controller different directions for commands.

Looked amazing and I am impressed with what they are able to do.
It'd be absolute torture, though if you had an amazing burger (or two!) drink and fries sitting beside you though and you couldn't make a move to eat it halfway between casting because kinect would be like "wtf you tryin' to do, fool?"

Very innovative but just the wrong Genre/ game to use for the demo...
Play play play is the focal point but, there is a reason you sit down...
-Farming ( for materials, reputation)
-Standing around waiting on your group for a raid/dungeon run.
-Auction house, shopping/ selling.
I can go on and on...
Another attempt to get Blizzards attention ( i guess) or just the masses in general by using a popular medium. Nice and fail all at once.
