Reach was definately overlooked. People don't like challenge anymore, they just want easy, casual experiences like CoD...

I wouldn't call Halo (Reach) a challange, more like a chore. Everyone who doesn't play Halo plays Call of Duty.

how is it a "chore"? it's always been relatively easy to take someone down. all you have to do is shoot them in the head. i suppose that's where the challenge comes in...

not sure how james can say the franchise is suffering from fatigue. i was hyped for the launch, more so than i was for any other game release this year (especially the now madden-like release of the call of duty franchise). call me a fanboy, but i couldn't wait to play bungie's "final" entry in the series. i say "final" because, well, wasn't halo 3 supposed to be their last?

I think he nailed it I think when he said "franchise fatigue" has started to settle in (although I'm still gaming hard in Halo).

However, I don't know why the same can't be said for Call of Duty... the series has been around what, a mere 2 years less than the Halo series? Not to mention that with yearly releases there's 7 CoD games saturating the franchise. Over a longer period of time, Halo only has 4 FPS games.

Like you said, people want a meaningless, simple, easy, challenge-less experience they don't have to think about.

How can Reach be overlooked when everyone knows about it and millions purchased it? The lack of attention certainly had nothing to do with Bungie changing the gameplay so drastically. Nah, has to be some other reason.

The key difference is that while Call of Duty has been around for nearly as long as Halo, it's only been a bona fide PHENOMENON since the first Modern Warfare (kind of like how Grand Theft Auto didn't come into its own until GTA3), whereas Halo hit it big early on.

I actually liked Reach a lot better -- I played that first before I played the first Halo. Halo: CE is not a bad game except for the final mission.

Reach to me was a bit like a more coherent COD game or Rainbow Six game.

Halo has 5 FPS titles. Reach, 1, 2, 3 and ODST. Then Wars and the Atari 2600 version.

Stupid comment, but I'll respond anyway: I'm not making value judgments here. I've barely played any of the Call of Duty games. I'm just pointing out that they didn't attain the mainstream success they have today until Modern Warfare. You can't deny that.

Has Amnesia done itself a disservice by being too scary?

Seriously, most people either aren't touching this game, playing it infrequently, or playing it in really short sessions, because it is scary as all hell.

If it was less 'good' then it'd have more sales because personally, even gameplay videos of it seem scary enough without actually playing this myself.

I didn't buy it because I played Penumbra in the Humble Bundle earlier this year. I couldn't make it past the first few rooms it was so terrifying.

When people said Amnesia was a scarier Penumbra, I promised myself to never even consider playing it.

So yeah, I agree, it probably would have sold better if it scaled back the horror, but it's a niche genre. I'm glad it's there for survival horror fans, they need all the love they can get.

There isn't any, but that's what makes the game so good. You know you can't do crap, so when you run into...them...you get this "OH SHIT" kinda feeling, and therefore making the game so fun and scary. If we had a bat or a gun, we wouldn't be as scared, so the game wouldn't be as fun.

Anyways, +1 to James for picking Amnesia. The game is truly a gem. I'm still playing through it myself.

The only teason I'd consider buying it is because of how scary it's supposed to be. I'm not scared by games, only jump once in a while , not like too spooked to play, not even close. The prospect of a game that might actually scare me is intriguing.

"no one does enemy AI like Bungie. No one."

I don't know about that. I recently tried the original F.E.A.R. for the first time, and the enemy AI there is pretty damn impressive, even now five years later.

thank you for finally giving Halo some attention! I feel like the game has gone completely under the radar, and compared to halo 3, which even on it's last limb always had above 600k users on, Reach, every time i log on, only has like 100k :O i wonder what happened to all those other people...

I used to regularly see 250k+ on at once. So where did they all go? My guess would be that CoD started getting popular and it's subsequent games started "stealing" more and more Halo fans. Not to mention all the other AAA releases in the holiday seasons (like AC:Brotherhood, Uncharted 2, etc.).

I'm glad to see some Enslaved love. I really am. I loved so much about the game. The colorful environments, the voice acting, the story, etc. It may have some flaws to it, but it outshined many other games I played this past year, and placed itself as one of my favorite games. I love my single player experiences, and can't wait to play the next game (and hopefully there will be many more in the coming years) Ninja Theory creates.

I just started playing Reach last night and calling it 'more Halo, but shinier', may apply to the multiplayer (dunno, haven't tried it yet), but that really does a disservice to the gravity of the single player campaign. Keeping in mind we know how it ends, the Titanic-like feel of what's going on is an ever present feel. It does seem like the most serious Halo to date and I'm thoroughly enjoying it so far.

You won't get downvoted because there are too many Halo fans who simply won't down vote a comment like that. I think the best of CoD was better than the best of Halo, but CoD is far more spotty than Halo. Thanks, Treyarch!

HALO: Reach definitely belongs in the top 10 of 2010. The game was amazing and a great swan song for this series as BUNGiE departs from it.

In my opinion, there hasn't been a truly phenomenal HALO game since Combat Evolved, as 2 and 3 were lackluster, and ODST alright. CE still remains one of the best FPS games of all-time, in my book, and its nice to see Reach return to that sense of discovery, thrill of combat and grandeur in its tale.

You just didn't see that with most of the series.

Not going to down vote you for your opinion like everybody else does on this website, but I do disagree! Though I only played Halo 1 and 2, didn't like either of them. Halo 3 and Reach look much better, and I haven't given them a try yet.

Seriously though, I HATED the first Halo. Worst level design EVER.
