Looks like this game will just have to be stuck in the shadow of other bigger titles. :`{

I guess it's another case of a good idea not quite good in execution.

@shabby329 This. I had no idea it was a full retail release. Sounds like they padded it out with unnecessary elements, perhaps in an effort to justify its retail packaging.

Too bad, because it's a really cool idea.

@Enosoma good idea, i know it's whining over chump change but i could get three "premium" wiiware titles (ie. and yet it moves, fluidity, cave story) for the price of lost in shadows. When gimmicks, albeit creative gimmicks, drive my gameplay, I prefer shorter, cheaper experiences.

Im in 6-9 floors, on medium difficulty its been easy so far. What a weak review. There is few things you did not talk about... Light perspectives for vertical & horizontal for one.

Felt excited when the first screenshots popped up, like this could be one of 'those games'; then forgot about it.

Then I saw an employee at my local knick knack pawn shop zooming through this title. I guess it was some time in November. Seemed like key card/orb collecting was being used as an agent for progression. And, like you said, the most basic kind of running and jumping was the template.

“If you can remember the last time you had trouble shoving around crates in a 3D game, you're probably remembering a PSOne title.”

Wasn't crate pushing a key component of the caves in the first Zelda DS game? I can't remember.

That was an engrossing read. I felt like I was there with you, deflating with each new disappointment.

Seriously, though, besides the weird 3D perspective issues and the pacing issues, you might as well have been talking about Limbo, no?

Saw this coming from a mile away. It looks decent, but the hype was overblown from day one. These artsy fartsy games usually get overhyped.

Excellent write-up. This game was on my radar and it's cool to see what you think of it. :)

On a superficial level, at least, the screenshots of this game reminded me a little bit of Limbo. That's good. Then the review told me it wasn't as good as Limbo. That's bad.

But I hear it comes with a free frogurt, at least.

While the idea looks interesting, this just reeks of "pretentious art game" in that Team Ico way, although without the obvious production values. Not to say that gimmicks are a bad thing, but the idea that you're only able to see the character's shadow just doesn't seem different enough from the billions of other platformers out there.

Speaking of platformers, though, ilomilo's out tomorrow. I'll look for reviews of that instead, I think :)

@Red Runner pre·ten·tious \pri-ˈten(t)-shəs\
1. characterized by pretension: as
a : making usually unjustified or excessive claims (as of value or standing)
b : expressive of affected, unwarranted, or exaggerated importance, worth, or stature

In my knowledge, Ico and Shadow of the Colossus weren't particularly pretentious. You may have meant that people that like these games a lot are pretentious, or make pretentious statements.

I dont agree with this review. IMO it is really good. It has some interesting gameplay mechanics, and the length was suitable for it. I do agree that the whole, getting to the top only to go down again thing was strange. But i loved it either way.

Ever since I got Braid last year for pc, I've been really hoping for an innovative and beautiful 2D platformer... Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of good pc 2D platformers; but Braid really stood out in how it just made me feel like I was... home. Perhaps my standards are too high?

I wish limbo was out for pc...

Called it. Hudson heavily relies on the "Ico" feel here, so much so that I had a feeling the game would suffer in one way or another.

Will probably try it though when it drops in price. I was surprised to find out it's a full game - it always looked like a WiiWare title.

This game was very high on my most wanted list. I loved the trailers and screenshots. I watched quite a few gameplay videos and thought the gameplay looked very basic and uninteresting. I reluctantly scratched it off my list a few months ago. I've gotten a lot better at discerning what games might have a new and unique gameplay mechanic that dazzles me. My backlog is freaking HUGE. I'm sorry Tower of Shadows, I don't have time.
