The map has proven to be the most popular custom gametype on the European Battle.net servers, and is now available on the U.S. servers as well. Check out the tutorial video posted after the jump to learn the rules the game before jumping into it -- a smart move, considering player death in Star Battle is permanent. (BUH BUH BUUHHHHH)
StarCraft 2 user-created map takes the fight into space

While most of us would consider StarCraft 2 to be a space-themed strategy title, very little of the game actually takes place in the outer parts of space -- you know, the parts where no one can hear you scream. A custom map by the name of Star Battle fixes that oversight, pitting two teams of six players against one another in a massive, DotA-esque encounter. Only, instead of controlling fantasy archetypes, you control gigantic spaceships, which we think we can all agree is way cooler.

Hardly the best example of what the user created content has to offer. But it's still pretty awesome.

I don't dislike Star Battle or anything, I just like other ones a lot better.(Nexus Wars, Risk, Hero Siege ect...)

Really? Because I've played Starcraft II since it came out this summer and this is the very first custom game that was compelling at all.
Nexus wars was fun for half an hour, everything else was trash.
So far there has been nothing like the great Helms Deep, Minas Tirith and Heavens Last Stand team based custom games that Brood War and Starcraft 1 had.

I am still waiting for a fully developed version of cat and mouse for SC2.

Just as I'm waiting for a fully developed Helms Deep or other team based hero controlling defense map.
There were so many great versions for Brood War, why the hell are there none for SCII?

Glad this game is getting some press coverage. The game is so polished and addictive it's almost a reason to buy Starcraft 2 on it's own.

I find DOTA repetitive and pointless as well, but this game is quite compelling and very team-based.

I'm kinda confused. I was playing this a month ago or so on Battle.net US servers. Why is it news now?
The map is actually pretty fun, and it's actually smart for letting you control ships that have users that left the game or are just afk for too long.

This currently is my favorite custom map. So many different ways to play.
Nexus Wars is also a blast. These games offer a nice break from the stresses of 1v1.

How to create a space map in SC2.
1. Replace ground texture with invisible texture.
2. Only use flying units.
3. Have a space backdrop.

I forgot that because all of you people have known about it means everyone has. I would have no idea this existed if not for this post, so why comment "This has been available forever" or "Why is this news" because obviously it's still news to some. Add real conversation, not "Old news, you suck"
