Runic hopeful Torchlight 2 will come to consoles
43
Runic Games' long-sought goal to port Torchlight to consoles will come to fruition when the game is released on Xbox Live Arcade as part of Microsoft's "House Party" promotion, beginning in mid-February. Depending on its success on the platform, Runic could look to quickly port the sequel to consoles, too, following its launch on PC this spring.
"That will hopefully get to the consoles, as well," Runic CEO Max Schaefer told MTV Multiplayer. "Depending on how [Torchlight on XBLA] does ... we're excited to get Torchlight 2 onto consoles. Hopefully sooner than how long [Torchlight on XBLA] took. We've gone through the exercise, we know what it takes."
Additionally, Schaefer priced Torchlight on XBLA at 1200 Microsoft Points ($15), though a representative for the studio later said that that price was not official. "It will be set by Microsoft, not Runic Games," said the representative, "and we cannot confirm it."

nope, it's currently $20 on steam. of course it goes on sale often, but it will eventually go on sale on xbl as well...anyway, don't see how $15 is unfair.

Yeah, that's crazy. So if a developer wanted to price their game lower in order to increase sales, they're still subject to whatever MS says. I've only seen screenshots and vids for Torchlight, but unless the demo is mind-blowingly awesome I am not paying $15. Since there's no multiplayer, I'll wait for the inevitable sale.

@Faenix Developers set their own prices all the time. Penny Arcade purposely placed their first overpriced game at $20 and Space Giraffe was set at $5 by the dev. max is lying through his gray teeth.

It also depends on who's publishing the game.
MS is publishing it thus they have a big say in how much the price will be.
If another publisher does it then they may give more choice to the developer over how much it is going to cost.
And if the developer self publishes then they'd get full control pretty much.

Heck, with the way the industry is going, it wouldn't be surprising at all if the sequel came to consoles and NOT the PC. With the success of the consoles, EVERYTHING comes to the consoles.
Yeah, guess I'm just bitter at the snubbing of PC gaming by the industry. I guess I'm not butthurt considering how many games I buy, how much I support the format but too many of my brethren pirate for me to make a difference. Guess people like PSP gamers feel the same way.

Meant to say butthurt, not "not butthurt".
But its 99.999% certain the sequel will come to consoles, it just feels like a stupid question to ask in my opinion. The problem is always if a certain game will come to the PC, that's always up in the air, for consoles, its a no brainer.

I agree with you, but in this case the developers were working on a PC only MMO, which is what prompted them to release this game to get some funding and a feel for people's reactions. I think they'll stick with PC, especially with the success they've had, and may have with the MMO when it arrives.

If you haven't played Torchlight already it's a must buy.

You're just talking nonsense. MS has repeatedly set pricing. There have been numerous instances where developers have wanted to release new DLC and MS wouldn't allow that to happen. You're extremely naive if you don't think MS has the ability to set prices or otherwise strongly encourages certain price points.

MS sets the prices if they are the publisher of a game/it's DLC.
If someone else or even the developer publishes it then they control the pricing.

@Vidikron Then how on earth have I downloaded free dlc dozens of times? MS gab them a pass? People who say MS forces them to charge for dlc are so full of their own shit it is laughable. What's funnier is the people who buy it.
Again, MS is very comfortable in it's bad guy role.

hopefully torchlight 2 wont be 360 exclusive after being announced as multiplat and PSN will get it.

@Gangplank i mean in the console sense, the same way the 360 has "exclusives" that are also available on the PC (ala mass effect, kotor, some halos, etc). (im not trying to hate on PC, i have torchlight on it. its just that my PC is crap and crashes for no reason so id rather play this stuff on consoles)

I really want to play this game resdesigned for the 360 controller, but I bought it for $5 a year ago. I can't justify $15 for it now, I'd *consider* that price if it had multiplayer.

Seriously am I in hell? Every story about Torchlight has someone crying about MP we who are gonna get it don't care that you don't want it or even care why you don't. Sheesh they arn't gonna add something because you disapprove!!

No multiplayer makes so sense at all to me for this kind of game.
But whatever...(still waits for Diablo III...will probably go grey first.)

Those who complain about it being $15.00 let me tell you first hand that the game is high quality and that they could easily sell this game for $30.00. You aren't getting ripped off. Once you play it you'll see. :)
I own the pc version and it plays better than a $50.00 game.
