Are you excited to start throwing entire weeks of your life down the hungry gullet of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim? We assume your anticipation will ramp up significantly after reading the next issue of Game Informer -- the magazine contains an expose on a number of new features for the franchise. One such change is the leveling system, which no longer binds players to a class defined by a set of skills. Players can pick and choose from the game's 18 abilities (down from Oblivion's 21), which level up with use while simultaneously unlocking new perks with each level.
Enemies will still scale to the player's level, but using a more balanced metric, resulting in a Fallout 3-esque approach as opposed to the near-impossible Oblivion approach. Of course, foes will likely be easily bested using another of the game's new features: Dual wielding. Players can equip any item or spell to either hand, using both simultaneously in combat. Though, we'll almost certainly put a Charm spell in our left hand, and Fortify Personality in our right, because that is how we do.
For more info on the game's new features, including a weapon-crafting system and improved character creation tools, check out the upcoming issue of Game Informer.

@PR0F3TA you really think they won't rush it to get it out for a 'magical' 11/11/11 date ?

And you seriously think they only started working on it when they announced it?
Sure they may not have been working on it for the whole 5 or 6 years since Oblivion came out, but that's still a long period of time with which they could have been working on it.
Not to mention that you look at Morrowind > Oblivion. Morrowind came out in 01 and Oblivion in 05 or 06. They started working on Oblivion the same year they released Morrowind, so history has it with them on working on games for a long time.

I seriously cannot wait for this. Oblivion was one of the best Action RPGs ive played and Fallout 3 was genrebreaking. I seriously cant wait. I hope its combat is like Dark messiah (Best first person sword fighting IMHO).

"Oblivion was one of the best Action RPGs ive played "
I really enjoyed Oblivion, but Demon's souls was so much better, as an action RPG, that Oblivion is practically last generation. Just in visual impact and a rewarding combat and RPG growth experience, Oblivion needs to take a lot of lessons from some of the more innovative games. Not meant to bash or be a fanboy. I just recommend Demon's Souls. Demon's Souls completely lacks the world crossing and exploring aspect that really makes Oblivion amazing, and I wish they could somehow combine the action and RPG of Demon's Souls in a world like Oblivion.

The problem I had is that I got Oblivion after I got Fallout 3, and I had already gotten used to a more advanced RPG from Bethesda.
I'll surely, absolutely, be purchasing Skyrim. Cannot wait to hear more.

Oh Morrowind, so advanced. I loved watching my arrows fly directly through an enemy and not register a hit.

Splitting hairs.
More advanced in the sense of dialog, quests, freedom. There may be some funny graphical glitches, but don't tell me that Oblivion doesn't have them either.
The (now-pulled) Morrowind 2011 compilation is a fantastic example of the potential the game still has to look beautiful, maybe even modern, and, with other mods, wipe the floor with Oblivion.
Oblivion is great, but it is most definitely a step down in a lot of ways.

Only 18 skills... a damn shame. Why's Bethesda so afraid of adding new things to do to this series?
It's gonna be weird walking around viking lands and not a single one is carrying a spear and probably not even an axe... while walking around in circles, bumping into each other to talk about mudcrabs briefly, both characters with the same voice, and then going back to milling.

@wcarnation The voice acting in Oblivion was probably (mercifully? Thankfully?) the worst part. I think they really improved on it with Fallout 3, and Obsidian did it even more with New Vegas. With all the improvements they're making im sure theyll have no trouble improving upon that as well. Hell, even if they hire the same number of actors, as long as they get people who aren't awful to listen to. Man, Jauffre/Breton and Nord/Orc guy was just grating to hear. Ugh.

I don't think Skyrim will be anywhere as good as Morrowind, but few games are.
HOWEVER, There's a good possibility it'll be a great game in its own regard. I just hope it isn't as boring as Oblivion.
My main wish was for there to be loads more skills, and hearing there is only 18 kinda damped my hopes a bit. But perhaps it'll all "fit together" in in the end and play well.
We'll see.

@Androu1 The game world, the lore, the character options. All were pretty exceptionally done and very interesting.
Just look at the Game Informer plot summary of each Elder Scrolls... each game is like 2 or 3 sentences... Morrowind is 3 paragraphs.

Well... Even less skills than in Oblivion? I mean I can see how they change Athletics and Acrobatics into one skill, but other than that... Probably combine Blade, Blunt and Hand to Hand into "Melee". Maybe they'll leave out entire magic schools or something. I just hope they return levitation to the series.
Can't wait for this game. The Nord have always been my favorite people in the TES universe. Too bad Oblivion didn't feature beards for them.

No, no Khajiit is where its at. Excellent speed, acrobatics, stealth, lock picking, and of course infinite night vision - Khajiit is the perfect thief race, which IS HOW I DO.

funny story..i go into gamestop yesterday to see if the new issue is out, (as i dont buy mags usually but for Skyrim i can part ways with 6 dollars). it's not. I ask the gamestop clerk when will it be out, and he tries to persuade me to pay for a subscription, saying "why're you buying one when you can get a subscription, they both cost the same."....i tried not to but i instinctively(if thats a word) gave a o_O.since when does a 15 dollar subscription equal 6 dollars for a magazine
granted, i knew what he was trying to say, but what he said was just..completely wrong lol especially after i said specifically i just want that single issue.

So it's got a leveling system thats a combination of the Obivion's skills leveling with use and Fallout: NV's gaining perks for the skills you use. And they we have the Bioshock 2 combat... So awesome!

@Fuzunga Does dual-wielding mean I could equip two shields?

All I know is that Oblivion sucked up a 100s of hours of my life. I better schedule some time off and maybe take the old lday on a nice vacation and spend time with her before I start playing this game.
