Homefront DLC maps to debut on Xbox Live, 'Suburb' exclusive to Xbox
74
Homefront is following in Call of Duty's footsteps in more ways than one. As Activision has done for its FPS franchise, THQ is partnering up with Microsoft to offer Xbox Live members first access to all future downloadable content for Homefront, Xbox's Major Nelson announced today at a THQ press event for the game. In addition, the Xbox 360 version of the game will include an exclusive map at launch, dubbed "Suburb."
Additional details about the map and partnership will be revealed on "Inside Xbox" next week.

Wow now I gonna buy an xbox 360 so that I can play the map first. /end of sarcasm
I dont know what these stupid developers think. Exclusive content for a multiplataform game. THQ know they are in economical problems, so I dont see how this make sense.

@Tereso An increasing number of people have all three major consoles now. Sweeteners like this are, I suspect, to get those people to chose for which platform they buy the game (and so keep them on XBL), rather attempting to get them to buy the console itsself.

@Tereso This actually gets them more money....
1) Microsoft pays them for exclusive DLC
2) they get money from the people who download it on XBL
3) it eventually comes to PSN and PC and people download it there
all Microsoft really gets out of the deal are the people who own both a 360 and PS3 and cant decide what system they want it for.

@Billlop Well to be quite fair, MS tends to announce their exclusives nearer to release than Sony, so I'm sure they have some more games up their sleeves.
On the other hand I'm glad I have a PS3, just looking at those exclusives and what games I personally want to play, I made the right choice.

There's another angle that people haven't considered when it comes to timed-exclusive DLC that comes to Xbox 360 first: fixing bugs and glitches. With multiplatform shooters statistically selling most on Xbox 360, there are more people to get hands-on with the DLC to discover possible exploits and glitches that weren't caught during pre-release testing.
Just think of it this way, PS3 and PC gamers: you're getting a better-polished version of the DLC when you get your hands on it.

I'm willing to bet that the developer makes the content, the publisher decides what to do with it.

Every year starts out like this, because Sony tends to announce their games YEARS ahead of time. MS will probably drop a bunch of announcements this E3. Not to say that the PS3 isn't looking to have a good year, barring any delays (and come on, it's Sony, you know they are coming).
Also, neither GW2 nor D3 are confirmed for this year, those are educated guesses at best, although I am seriously holding out hope for GW2.

You are absolutely right...and so I will follow and not rush out to get this game...because I do have all three consoles...but this tactic just makes me sick because I prefer to play multiplat games on my ps3 so then what do they have to say to that...smh well I thought THQ had something going their but I was DEAD wrong.

haha, i know what you're saying. i just recently got a ps3 for the holidays and good god, these long software updates are killing me. now when i decide to play a game i just start it an hour before i actually plan on playing the game, go grab some lunch, and come back hoping that it's done updating. :)
as far as these updates are concerned, i think sony really dropped the ball this time around. oh well, just griping, probably unnecessarily.

@Billlop - We don't know what Microsoft has coming out this year because they haven't announced what is coming out this year.
Yes, Sony's list of exclusives is quite impressive and will be even more impressive if they all actually come out this year (big if) but we don't know how it will compare to the 360 until Microsoft starts making their announcements for the year, likely at E3.

It makes perfect sense. Hosting DLC on PSN's servers is much more expensive than LIVE servers - this thanks to the fact that LIVE gamers subsidize bandwidth costs. They have to wait to see if PS3 gamers support the title enough through sales before they are willing to upload content.

I'm pretty sure that "Suburbs" is a reference to Justin's favorite band The Arcade Fire.

Agreed. This is precisely why I'm buying dead space 2 for ps3 ( yay for extraction). Its the add ons that make a particular game more appealing for a multiconsole owning gamer. My only problem now is reconciling the fact that most of my friends only have Xbox. For this reason I buy most single player games(and exclusives) for ps3 and multiplayer for 360. Dead Space 2 is one of these outliers as it had multiplayer now and exclusive content. I will probably buy it twice as I have all the trophies and almost all the achievements for ds1...love that game.

Not all that surprising given all the advertising the game is getting on the dashboard lately. I do wonder how much dashboard exposure helps to secure these exclusive deals. Getting your product in front of at least 15 million people daily, for what I assume a cheap price, has to move some publishers.

What a f u c k i n g sham this industry is nowadays. There's nothing "exclusive" about any of this crap for any of this games anymore. It's the status quo for an industry beleaguered by overspending, over-marketing, and not enough money and man-hours and creativity going into the actual damn games themselves.
I remember the good ol' days when one bought a game, you got that game and everything that was built for it, content-wise, on a disc.
Neat concept, huh.

@Bumblemuk Competition is healthy. Get over it. Instead of crying about it, mail Sony about not securing enough exclusive rights.
People always act as though Microsoft is the devil for securing these things. Does that not, by extension, make Sony complacent asses who don't care if their loyal user base loses out to the competition?

@Gregarious Lost another PS3 customer here as well. If people wanna see this shit stop then stop letting them get away with it. Maybe if they see the PS3 version sell like shit then they'll think twice before pulling bullshit like this again.
So another PS3 customer gone.

@Acosta02 The reason it turns this into a no buy for me is that these exclusive deals ensure the PS version will sell less, which hurts the online aspects of the game, which diminishes the overall value to me. It is not that I really want to buy those maps, it's that I want a sting online community.

@Acosta02 Actually, yes. I was seriously considering buying the game until this came out. Plus, to Gnordy's point, the MP will suck more on PS3 now. There are too many other good games coming out this year for me to feel like I didn't get my $$$ worth.

Do you understand that by not buying it you are reinforcing their idea that teh 360 is a more viable platform for specials because they sell better there?
If you're not interested in the game, cool, don't buy it, but if you think you're punishing the dev, you're really just making it easier for them to not support your console.

@Synner - Thanks for keeping this discussion intelligent. Voted up.
I sincerely hope this doesn't make the devs think the PS3 isn't worth coding for. I assume they had some analyst run the numbers on this decision, knowing they will lose PS3 customers. MS certainly did and, to your point, it might work out for both of them.
So where does this leave us PS3 gamers? We're screwed if we buy it for our system and damned later if we don't. The best I can do is post my dissatisfaction on the interWebs and hope their analysts (and Sony's analysts) are reading this too.
I still won't buy the game. My $ is my vote and there is still plenty of FPS competition out there for me to be just fine without this game.

@Gregarious Honestly though, I don't see a lot of the DLC as worth the money, especially on stuff like mass effect or other RPGs, so I think I'd be even LESS inclined to buy it for a shooter, but that's my personal opinion.
I think the game looks pretty neat, and am likely to buy it, but not likely to get the DLC. I think MS is tossing money at these exclusives that aren't really going to sway many people, it's not like this is a huge franchise like GTA was. This is a new IP, and might even end up not being good!
But if you are interested, I just hate to see people let the companies' console war BS keep them from playing a multiplat release all together.

Thing is, this whole "Console War" isn't soley based on who has more exclusive. Sony could have a billion exclusive, doesn't mean it will be good or sell well. The real "war" is who can out last the other. Sony is using their first party support while MS is using their third party support. So far it has proven well for MS as they still in the game

Actually, they might not. They might just think that it's a 3rd party title and not worry so much about it, they were already paid the licensing.
What may happen though is that they may go "see, no one bought the game, good thing we didn't try to secure exclusive rights, that would have been a waste."
Also, this game not selling well might make them not devote as much resources to developing similar style and genre games from first party efforts.
