Game Informer has rolled out yet more Skyrim coverage, this time discussing some of the technology behind the upcoming Elder Scrolls sequel. Of particular interest is Bethesda's new Creation engine, which replaces the aging Gamebryo engine used to craft its recent titles Fallout 3 and Oblivion. Bethesda rewrote "every major system" for Creation, improving draw distances and lighting in the process.
The game features an "overhauled" foliage system as well, with the article noting that artists can now manipulate the animation properties of trees, allowing them to whip around in the wind, for example. A new precipitation system will also facilitate realistic snowfall, something you're likely to see a lot of in Skyrim, a much colder land than Oblivion's Tamriel.
Character animations and interactions have been upgraded as well. Oblivion players will be happy to hear that the game world no longer freezes when a conversation is begun. Now, instead of entering a one-on-one closeup with another character, the usual camera angle is maintained while the character continues to go about his business while conversing. As an example, a bartender may clean the bar while talking with the player.
Skyrim also utilizes a new "Radiant Story" quest system, which allows the game to personalize side quests for each individual player. Rather than simply offering a prescribed list of quests in certain locations, the game can tailor quests to each player based on where they are, which characters they've met and what their skills are.
Finally, Game Informer has released the very first screen of Skyrim. Chances are good that you already saw it before reading this far down. Check out Game Informer for more details on the tech behind Skyrim.

Reminds me of Infinity Blade for some reason. Anyway, looks MUCH better than Oblivion's engine. Now let's hope it runs smoothly too.

It's as big as one, though. I mean come on, I'm Snorlax for Christ's sake.

Oblivion was a 360 launch title up until about two weeks before release. It got delayed to March. I'm expecting a delay similar to that for this one.

Yeah it is like all those Law and Order episodes where nobody in New York stops to talk to the cops about a murder investigation. Apparently everyone in New York has to keep working at all times.

@Singuensai Cyrodiil's part of Tamriel too, so you could just say that Richard meant the part of Tamriel we saw in Oblivion

I hope I get the new game informer soon, that screenshot seems a little too little to judge the graphics on, but just with that I'm leaning a little towards the disappointed side. I'm sure that the other screens will wipe away this concern, but even if they don't the awful animations and voice acting didn't keep me from 300 hours in Oblivion, and all the amazing stuff they're adding in this one, slightly less than astounding graphics won't either.

FAQ writers are gonna have a field day with the game tailoring quests based on all those variables!
Posted: Jan 17th 2011 5:31PM Uracat said
That's all well and good, but what about the stuff that really matters. When an npc is starring out a window on a cold night, does their breath fog up the glass? When you strike a rock with your sword is there a chance of it breaking in half and then striking your character in the skull for massive damage? When you eat food in the gameworld does your character grow increasingly larger to the point where he has trouble fitting through doorways? These are the main issues that people should be focusing on.

It really speaks to Bethesda's ability to build a compelling universe that I adored Morrowind and Oblivion so much in the face of such techncial deficiencies.
I hope they don't lose focus on the mythology and richness of the universe as they invest in new tech - it seems like an easy pitfall to produce a gorgeous, bland game.

@CrumbBum See, I don't actually feel like the Elder Scrolls universes are that compelling at all. I'm a huge nerd, and I usually dive really deep into whatever universe the thing I'm enjoying is in. Mass Effect, Halo, Dragon Age, all of them I've read books, read the codex's in DAO and ME, read all kinds of conspiracies and stuff from Halo, but I can tell you next to nothing about the mythology of the Elder Scrolls.
Nords are vikings, orcs are orcs, elves all descend from one kind of elf, dark elves are bad, and daedra are some kind of thing. That said, I think the gameplay itself is just so incredibly compelling even with all it's faults, that it's just incredibly engrossing. Maybe it's just because there aren't really any other kind of game like them, but there is just some magic to them that I can't stay away from.

Four years I’ve managed to lurk this blog without registering, but this comment is too much! While I understand it’s pretty easy to just play the game without taking time to read the lore (it is open-word after all), some of your statements are just plain silly (I admit it was mostly the darkelf one that got to me). The Elder Scrolls has more lore and written history than pretty much all the game series you mentioned COMBINED. I’ve been playing the Elder Scrolls for nearly nine years now, and I’ve barely scratched the surface of the lore, there’s a ton I couldn’t tell you about the TES universe. But trust me, if you invest some time in reading up on this stuff you’ll be well rewarded, TES has one of the richest lore libraries out there and you might be surprised at what you might find (even the moons have some crazy lore behind them!). Here's a few sites where you can read up on Elder Scrolls lore without having to hunt down information in-game:
