*whispers* y'know, the whole ironic celebration of communism thing is only popular in this country, right? The people who actually lived through it...not so nostalgic.

Your average person doesn't even know what communism is. They just think it means dictatorship or oppression or something.
Not only that, the places that usually are called communistic are pretty much so in name only. In fact, I'm going to assume that what you refer to as communism is anything but that.
The US has tried to spread lies about it, and they damn sure succeeded. Anyone with a damn brain would realize that all the crap people complain about in Russia and China has nothing to do with communism. Censorship, for one thing, has absolutely nothing to do with communism, yet still communism constantly gets blamed for it. It's like blaming capitalism for rape.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to be be downvoted for being the voice of reason.

@Mehbah actually the adverage person does know what communism is. I for one know that the idea of communism is perfect, on paper. But it can never be put into real life because of human nature. Thats why communism fails because it's always broken from the begining and corrupt. Communism does lead to censorship because people see the corruption and speak out against it and get silenced. The US has corruption too but we as a free democracy have the power to choose who we want in power and also to speak out again it. Obviously communism has its draw backs thats why the U.S.S.R. failed and look at North Korea a huge amount of their population are starving and poor. The US hasn't spread lies about communism, communism damned itself. If you don't like the global out look on communism move to north korea and get shut off from the surrounding world, starved, tortured and analy raped by the amazing communist leader Kim Jong Il.

@Mehbah Yeah, I know a few Eastern European intellectuals who lived under Soviet rule who prefer the term "Red Fascism." It's really far more or an accurate term. However, I still use the term "communist" to refer to Red Fascist states in general conversation because people know what the hell I'm talking about. I usually find that people with a college education or better know the different between Soviet communism and Marx's ideas, so the context usually defines which I'm talking about.
antv bringing it up in the context of this article made it pretty clear that he meant "communist" in the context of the self-defined former government of Russia. Chances are he doesn't need to be schooled in the proper principles of Marxism and he actually knew what he was talking about to begin with. Living under communist as inaccurately defined by the Russians sucked.

@Xero Theory
See, you're full of shit. You prove it by saying that communism is the opposite of free democracy. There is absolutely nothing that stops a communistic government from being entirely transparent. Once again, you fall for the lies and spread them further. Censure can just as easily exist in a capitalistic society; just look at your beloved US. It certainly isn't anything like China, but censure definitely exists. You just prefer to pretend it isn't there. And for that matter, why do you think a communistic society can't elect their representatives? Yet again you blame communism for something unrelated, like dictatorship or monarchy.
The more I look at your post, the more I get disgusted by your crap. "It's flawed, and it's proved by the fact that it failed" is one of your argument. And once more you blame communism for all the crap that happened in Russia or China, despite pretending that you actually know what communism is just sentences ago. Not only that, you use meaningless arguments. If I start a school and teach correct math, does it mean my math was wrong if the school gets shut down for any reason? It would, if your logic held water.
"Communism is bad because people in North Korea are starving!" You know where else people are starving? Everywhere. You know where they starve especially much? In dictatorships led by incompetent morons. If North Korea actually HAD something even similar to real communism, then those people wouldn't be starving. But no, why blame dictatorship and incompetence when you can put it all on communism?
"The US hasn't spread lies about communism." Yeah, totally not. Because you clearly haven't proved that you don't even know what communism is. Your average American on the net definitely doesn't use communism is a synonym for bad. Hell, your post full of outright lies got upvoted, which further proves the people don't know a damn thing about communism.
And what was that? "If you don't like it, move to North Korea." That's like something taken directly from http://derailingfordummies.com/. "You don't like lies? lollololo move to some stupid place you stupidhead! lol I sure showed him!"
@BrianReal
So, you choose to perpetuate the inaccuracies about communism by taking the easy way out and never correcting people. Not much for truth, are you? Or do you just value truth differently for things you like and things you don't?
If I have a white car, I can call it black all I want. It still isn't black. Apparently this logic doesn't apply to certain things.
@Nova17899
Rape exists in capitalistic societies. So does racism. Do you see people blaming capitalism for that? No? But then why do you do similar things against communism? What's that? Because those things also exist in communistic societies? What a coincidence, because corruption and censure exist in capitalistic societies as well.
Let's make this clear: dictators love to claim they're communistic because they can use the excuse "we're taking your money and rights so we can give them back to everyone to improve everything." But since they happen to be dictators, they don't do that. They just keep it for themselves or waste it on crap that doesn't help the people. And this is where the average dumbass fails to see through the lies. A dictator is going to be a dictator no matter which sort of economy he pretends to have.
Essentially every counter argument I've gotten here is based on http://derailingfordummies.com/#true. But it's true, communism is dictatorship! But it's true, communism leads to censorship! Not once do you use your damn brains and realize that, shock, you're blaming communism for unrelated things because you have been essentially brainwashed to believe it. While we're at it, why don't we blame math for the existence of fraud and stealing? If no one could count at all, they wouldn't realize that stealing something gives them more of it! Math is evil! Ban math!

Oy vey. You're killing the fun of my favorite snarky videogame website. I hope this doesn't spread - the next thing we know McElroy will be bringing up Gramsci to review the next Cookin' Mama game.
Let's end it at this, a graphical depiction of the communist party:
http://laughingsquid.com/wp-content/uploads/communist-party-t-shirt.gif
The clear sense of liberty felt by Marx versus Lenin's clear seriousness and disdain for Marx's feelings are quite telling, as is the placement of other "communist" leaders behind Lenin, not Marx. Additionally, Stalin's placement as a wall flower shows he doesn't fit in at the party at all, creating a strong metaphor for the complete lack of any connection between the Soviet states and any form of true communist principles after Lenin's death.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go get my hair did.

@Mehbah Lol, you finally got downvoted for being the voice of reason.
I just want to say that I find your arguments very compelling and I must say, I truly agree with what you have just remarked.
Being a Russian myself, and having a Russian mother along with Russian grandparents, great-grandparents etc. who saw the rise and fall of the Soviet Union, all this poppycock about horrible Communist oppression is sheer nonsense.
Plus, if the Socialist regime in Russia had such a tough censorship, how come in the USSR Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn remained unscathed by word-filtering? Hm hm, and living in Germany, there are many non-vulgar things you cannot say or do in public, and there is a ban on certain political parties; except for the Nazi party, which is still allowed in Germany - but heavens forbid you don't feel like killing a Communist, in which case you must be a filthy Commie-Conspirator.
Alas, I will also be undoubtedly downvoted, and then told that I wasn't downvoted on account of being a supporter of the voice of reason, so to speak, but because whatever I say is untrue and I'm presumably a stupid bigot.
inb4 unreasonable counterarguments

You'll be down voted not for being the voice of reason, but because pretty much all you said is untrue. Sure censorship isn't communism, but it is a side effect of it. Communism isn't a dictatorship, but the fact is most communist countries were dictatorships while communist.
