Smedley: DC Universe Online is SOE's fastest seller yet
46
DC Universe Online appears to be off to an excellent start, as Sony Online prez John Smedley stated on Twitter that the game has been the company's "fastest selling game ever." Smedley also tweeted that the MMO has had to add servers, and SOE is currently working out supply chain issues. We previously reported DCUO topping the UK sales chart (though it has dropped significantly since then).
Speaking with Joystiq, Smedley elaborated on the game's current sales split between console and PC: "We're at 52 percent PS3, 48 percent PC." He explained that if NPD data ends up showing the PS3 version outperforming PC, it's because the tracking service doesn't have access to the Steam sales, which he tells us have been very strong since launch.

I've enjoyed it pretty darn well. Don't know if I'll stick around, but I'll certainly get a good, solid month out of it. It's also gotten me reading more DC comics

good choice, DC has been putting out some pretty good stuff as of late. it's also a great jumping on point for Supes and Batman (all titles).

Saying it's the fastest selling without giving some good numbers? That's usually good and bad.
Publishers usually like to tout numbers when sales are really good.

Galaxies sold well. So did the EQs.
I won't say that speaks to their quality, but that's not the point.

well stated. maybe they're just spending some time with it before posting a review. at least i hope that's what's happening. i checked metacritic and DCUO is at 64, but i would prefer a Stiqview of it. i trust these guys a bit more.

It could also be a multi-sku thing. FFXI/FFXIV are the only real precedent for MMOs released on console and PC, so they might be playing both for some comparison.
I hear neither version takes full advantage of its platform.

so a game for two platforms that is selling like hotcakes and the sales are almost 50/50 when many companies cry for the lack of success on the p.c. market??? well, not bad for a dying platform .........

Been playing since launch on the PC end and I'm still loving it. Really looking forward to the monthly updates and expansion of the game's license use.

I just have a feeling that this might turn into APB... Ill give it a few months to see if its still kicking.
Its bad enough having my APB disc became useless, i dont think i could handle having two disc that are useless.

How can it be APB when it worked during beta? Being APB to me says that it is broken in beta and continues to be broken in launch. Lack of content or something could be an issue, but that's every MMO according to WoW players(gee, a new MMO doesn't have as much content as one that's been out for 5 years? Ya don't say?).
APB is being busted on release. And this is from someone who played the Euro alpha. I remember actually asking one of the RTW devs when they'd fix the cars from having slip and slide driving. They said it was lag, then the NA beta started and it was still happening. then they said on release, and well.. yeah.

Sony keeps almost everything running. Look at Star Wars Galaxies, for Christ's sake.
And Vanguard.
And EQ.
And EQ2.
And Pirates of the Burning Sea.
And Planetside.
SOE is the Island of Misfit MMOs.

damn realized i forgot too add, I wouldn't try to play city of hero's cause i can imagine the controls would be difficult for me so DCUO on PS3 would be right up my alley !
Also forgot too add this game for a list of PC games ( Oblivion / Morrowind )

Every time I hear the name John Smedley, I can't help but also recall the names Brad McQuaid and Gordon Wrinn. I then begin to tremble, clutch my knees to my chest, rock back and forth, and repeatedly babble, "Three hour corpse run - working as intended, seated insta-crit - working as intended, monk bag nerf - working as intended, in-game mini game to blunt the mind-rending tedium of the game - working as intended..." and on and on.
Where's my Ambien?

self-ful·fill·ing proph·e·cy
[self-fool-fil-ing prof-uh-see]
–noun, plural -cies.
1. a prediction that directly or indirectly causes itself to become true, by the very terms of the prophecy itself, due to positive feedback between belief and behavior.
(e.g. Gamers not picking up a game they would like to support because they're worried it won't be popular enough to survive in the market)

I enjoyed playing the Beta, it was easy to control and fun to meet other players .. it was my first MMO really i had a blast i will buy it when ...
1. The Disc becomes cheaper ( paying $15 a month sucks but i will pay it when i get to buy the game cheaper then the $15 a month won't be so bad )
2. when i have close to nothing or nothing at all in my back log ( right now stands at 7 games ( The Saboteur, Ghost Busters, Overlord 2, Singularity, Mod Nation Racers, PoP: The Forgotten Sands And Brutal Legend

((Regarding Ps3's port))Good game for what its worth, since its "new" in the MMO playing field new ideas and fixes should be available over time w/ patches, hopefully. Other than that, the only Cons i see in the game is its depth of play.
Button mashing for hours on end gets repetitive. Not comparing this game to another MMO but adding little things like:
- some type of barter system (yes like the "Auction House"")
- player made items
- notification when a "friend" logs on (Ps3)
- maybe a less laggy more recognizable User Interface
All this can be improved with time, good show SoE, Jim Lee and Dev's

They have a broker section in the watchtower and the game tells you when friends log on. You have to friend the person first.

Played the beta, bought the CE edition and have been playing enthusiastically. It's my first MMORPG and the only one I've ever been interested in due to the real time battles. Sure it's not the deepest, but the more you play, the more you realize simple button mashing won't do you much good. There is strategy involved in the fighting system. I will definitely keep this one afloat for a few months at least. It's an ambitious project and quite well done as far as I'm concerned.

Fastest Selling compare to which titles?
Posted: Jan 25th 2011 12:40AM UnSub said
@hiruuamon Compared to SOE's other titles.
The last new boxed game they launched was Pirates of the Burning Sea. Maybe Clone Wars Adventures had a box, but I'm not sure.
The funny thing here is that it looks like DCUO is selling about 150k per platform in its launch week, so that although the overall title might be selling quickly, on a per-platform basis it is a lot less impressive.

Check the forums. They already said that the 150K number is wrong. The same website published Cataclysm numbers and was off by a million. Literally, 1.2 million.
