Reggie articulates what's compelling about Nintendo's 3DS launch games
73
Just as Super Mario 64 DS ushered in the era of the original DS system, it seemed fitting that a 3D-enhanced version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time -- the cherry on top of last June's "E3DS" scoop -- would be the linchpin of the 3DS hardware launch this March. Except, it's not going to happen.
Footnoted in a vague announcement that more than thirty 3DS games would be released between the system's launch and E3 2011 (in early June) was the equally ill-defined update that Zelda: OoT 3D was still "in the works," along with other triple-A Nintendo iterations for the new handheld, including Mario Kart, Paper Mario, Animal Crossing and Star Fox -- not to mention the ballyhooed Kid Icarus comeback, Uprising, which did impress at last week's preview event.
"Mario, Zelda, all of those titles are coming," Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime told MTV Multiplayer. "From our perspective, we like to launch titles when they're ready. And so they'll be ready. They'll be ready soon -- just not in that initial time period of late March to early June." In other words: "after E3."
That leaves Nintendo with a somewhat dubious 3DS launch "window" lineup (we still don't know exact release dates) of first-party titles -- three to be exact: Nintendogs + cats, Pilotwings Resort and Steel Diver. You could make a case for those first two serving strong supporting roles in the hardware launch; and Reggie, off the top of his head, said that the Nintendogs and Pilotwings franchises have combined to sell "tens of millions of copies," despite neither being a particularly prolific sequel bearer.
Steel Diver, on the other hand, is an unknown (it began as a tech demo for the original DS) and stars ... a rather drab submarine. Astutely sensing our apathy for the game, Reggie explained that "from a compelling standpoint, we think it's awfully compelling."
If you're not buying it ... you could just buy Street Fighter IV again.

Yeah, I think it was a dumb mistake anyways to not release Black and White on the 3DS. The graphics almost make it seem like it was built with the 3DS in mind but they wanted to get it out as soon as possible. Every new Pokemon generation should be on the next gen handheld.

For me, the only compelling thing about Nintendo lately is what ARS TECHNICA said about the company... "Nintendo as a company seems to excel at defining the future by looking backwards". It's mind-boggling how they can remain "in the black" with their conservative business model of both finances and product in the tech world. Friend codes? Limited Online Services? Rehashing of nearly twp decade old titles? Outdated functionality?
Whatever it is, I'm damn envious that it's possible -- and that I haven't done anything similar, haha.

Why the hell do you people always insist on focusing solely on the things that they did not decide to do (which, frankly, is almost always irrelevant crap like higher screen resolutions or gamerscore/achievement systems, ugh), whole conveniently forgetting about all the technologies with which they stuck their neck out, while their competitors waited, watched and then followed behind them upon success, like a bunch of sheep?

Why do "they" focus on that? It's just a guess-- but probably because the amount of "normal" hardware features & software accessibility Nintendo *doesn't* put in their products easily outnumber the supposed neck-stuck-out "innovations" their devices provide. It wouldn't be such an issue if these normal features were difficult to implement or weren't cost effective. Features such as increased on-board or add-on HDD space, overall online accessibility (...how Nintendo continues to fumble on this, I'll never understand. Given their dedicated fanbase, it's an untapped cash-crop), and their multimedia interfaces. I understand that even Iwata himself reported that their machines are for gaming first -- I welcome that, but if their machines have the multimedia outlets (USB, SD card, et.al) and their games clearly "could" use them, why shouldn't they?
Hell, as an owner of a 3D HDTV, I'm impressed (and glad) that Nintendo is releasing a glasses-free 3D experience. I'm just hoping it catches on enough to sway other companies to do away with the glasses.
Heh, "you people". XD Generalizations are fun.

I'll be all over this system when some games come along that really do it for me. Short of a new 3DS zelda coming out with the first gen console ..... I think I'll wait for a 3DSi.
Not that I think the 3DS is going to be anything but huge, just doesn't have enough to persuade me to pay the premium to become an early hardware adopter.

I was really excited about the 3DS when it was shown at E3. As is nears launch, I can't help but feel underwhelmed by the details being leaked out.
I find myself asking if it will really replace my iphone on the subway as my gaming device of choice?
The stylus based touch setup just seems so "palm pilot' oldschool.

Haha, pretty much it right there. That almost sums up the N64 experience. They would release an absolutely amazing game and then there would be nothing for another 6 months. I'm glad that they recognize and acknowledge this and have said that they want to make sure a steady stream of games are available to support the 3DS, even if the launch titles are a little lackluster.
Nintendo would survive, but in order to truly succeed with a higher priced handheld now, they can't do it on their own. They must have strong third party support and I'm glad that they know it, too.

Maybe that'll come later. They're done with SSFIV as is, so not as much of a problem with porting it to a new platform. MvC3? They'd probably want to finish it on the two current platforms before thinking about moving it to a new platform.
I'd be all over a portable MvC3. I'd be happy with a portable TvC, too.

Hey if you guys don't mind another Nintendo system with another launch comprised of 95% of rehashes then by all means buy it up.
At least they had the guts to bring back Kid Icarus; Pilotwings is a bonus.
Now where's a Pikmin sequel? Or Earthbound? Or RC Pro Am? Or Excitebike?
I love Mario and Zelda like the next guy but FFS Nintendo, can you devote some time to the other titles you've done in your life?

Plenty of Star Fox?
Do you realize how few Star Fox games are actually around?
Star Fox, 1993
Star Fox 64, 1997
Star Fox Adventure, 2002 (Not an actual traditional Star Fox game.)
Star Fox Assault, 2003 (I think) (Again, not completely a traditional Star Fox game)
Star Fox Command (Semi-traditional, but stages were broken down into tiny areas, and limited)
We haven't had a "traditional" Star Fox game since Star Fox 64, where flying and shooting are the primary objective.

I'm bitter about the 3DS launch, the game lineup sucks... I mean really sucks. How could they not even get the Zelda port completed, that would have sucked way less.
Preordered my system a few months ago when the local EB/Gamestop let me, was expecting at least Zelda and Icarus or maybe Professor Layton.. But here we are, nothing..... I mean nothing. Nintendo has made me a sad gamer, so excited to get my paws on new hardware, but alas I will cancel my preorder after work and maybe pick one up this summer.

@Scuffles You must have been sarcastic because I'm not sure I was too level headed on that.
For example I'm sure it doesn't 'suck' for everyone, Nintendo has their market research and they know that virtual pets sell! But, I wonder who the early adopters are, hardcore gamers or more casual? Or who has more available funds just after the holidays, children who's parents will buy the unit or children who can buy it themselves (adults like myself who refuse to grow up)?
Then there is the fact that I admire Nintendo because they are not normally willing to rush crappy software out to make a buck, so they are probably tweaking Icarus based on the control feedback we've seen and want to make sure they nail Zelda given it's one of the highest rated games of all time.... But they rush out the 3DS to meet a revenue target and will update it through firmware updates and such, totally contradicting what gamers look up to them for.
I'm a bit bitter and confused, but more than anything I hope this launch doesn't hurt them as I agree, I think the unit will be awesome and I can't wait for some of those killer A games to be released on it.

Perhaps the internet has scarred my brain for life or something but I really didn't read too much angst in your original post. Possibly because I feel from the sound of it the exact same way and I'm not off kilter about it either.
You were disappointed in the launch titles so your canceling your preorder but you know its going to be a solid system once it gets off its feet. So your content to pick it up later, when it has the guns to back itself up. Seems like the logical approach to me :)
I too hope that this lackluster launch doesn't hurt them in the long run.

Since there are no new Zelda or Mario releases I'm not really interested in buying a new system just for a rehash.
Which I can understand, I'm going to hold out on the 3DS until it releases some decent new games as well. No sense in spending the premium to be the first to adopt new hardware if there is little to no software your interested in at release.

If they brought out Mario or Zelda they would get bashed for not doing anything new, if they do something new like Steel Diver they get bashed for not sticking to their big franchises.
People are so impossible to please.
I would state that I am also hard to please and somewhat disappointed by the launch line-up, which to me feels too full of shooters and X360/PS3 games alongside stripped down (Madden I'm looking at you) versions that feel like features were left out so that there was something to tout next year.
Pilotwings Resort looks interesting, but I don't expect I'll be getting anything else from the "launch" lineup unless the reviewers are really surprised by something.
