EA's Darkspore – which takes all the cuddly out of Spore and replaces it with a massive dose of Diablo – will crawl out of the primordial development ooze at Maxis for a March 29 release date, as revealed at the end of the latest developer diary, which explores the game's hero editor.
Pay close attention at 1:15 in the video to see what's flashing when discussing the region of the hero's body which represents "offense." Odd. We haven't thought about underwear as offensive since the time we saw a grown man wearing Dora the Explorer Underoos (it can't be unseen).
This looks like a great twist on Spore. I always had so much fun in the creature and vehicle creators! I'd be wary of raised expectations regarding anything spore-related. It looks like it'll be a decent game, but I've been burned before!
besides that, I don't think Maxis has ever done a game remotely like this (correct me if I'm wrong), where as Diablo 3 is... well... THREE. Blizzard has some experience at this sort of thing. Plus they are sure to delay diablo 3 another six months so they can polish insanely small details like making seven different blood spatter patterns for when your character steps on a rat or some crazy idle animation that people will only ever see if they leave their character standing in one spot for an hour.

actually tho, i don't think you can customize the hero's actual body, at least from what I understand of Darkspore. there are a whole bunch of pre-made heroes that you can customize. I kinda hope I'm wrong though.
...I somehow managed to avoid all media regarding this game until now. This looks a bit interesting, I hope there's a gameplay demo at some point, as all that creativity could go to waste without some solid dungeon-crawling to back it up.
It seems really silly to me that they're focusing on the "parts" as somehow being innovative and new, when they are exactly, EXACTLY, like equipment in any other game ever. I guess they have to, because it's Spore.
One thing I'm unclear about is how you utilize the multiple creatures. If you can switch between them at will, that would be pretty neat.
In the end, as much as I want to like this game, I have serious doubts. I like the style a lot, and I'm a huge fan of a good hack'n'slash, but I'm not sure the gameplay will have anything to lift it above its competition.
Maxis, what happened to you. The game looks like decent fun but you used to make much more than decent fun. As a comment above says, parts are really just standard equipment. The dude is emphasizing that the UI lets you compare stats? Oh my god. And in a previous dev diary i saw a guy raving about different part rarity that basically amounted to white, green, blue and purple items. Yeah.
Now im pleased to hear that it will be released soon which means its basically complete. Now start making SimCity 5. Or SporeCity or something.
