Ace Combat: Assault Horizon represents 'rebirth' for the series, coming 'later this year'
36
Ace Combat: Assault Horizon is not Ace Combat 7. In a lot of ways, it isn't an Ace Combat game -- outside of the branding and the fact that it's got planes, it's unrecognizable from its predecessors. AC: Assault Horizon is a more visceral game, doing away with the open-air, long-distance dogfighting of the series' roots and exchanging them for closer encounters and more environmental interaction.
Executive director and producer Kazutoki Kono describes the game as "a complete rebirth of the franchise" and it's immediately evident in the brief bit of gameplay Kono showed off at Namco's Ignite 2011 event in San Francisco. Dogfights are a lot closer now, with the camera zooming in over the shoulder of the player's plane to give them a better look at their target. Because of this new system (aptly titled the "Close Range Assault System"), the game's combat has shifted away from an emphasis on missile locking in exchange for a more machine gun-heavy scheme, making for some jarring combat -- planes erode and explode under fire in a fantastic display of shrapnel fireworks. Flying around a metropolis, Kuno was not only destroying planes, but flying between buildings and a massive crane at the center of this seaside city.
The game takes place in 2015 in Africa, where a new type of WMD threatens the world. Players will assume the role of William Bishop, whose job it is to stop the impending mass destruction -- though Kuno promised players will also see events unfold through the perspectives of other characters. AC: Assault Horizon will feature real-world locales and is set to launch on the Xbox 360 and PS3 "later this year."

Did Namco wake up or something in the last 2 days?

Seriously! It all makes sense and feels like a huge evolution, yet I'd have never come up with this result for gameplay. As someone who hated how the series got to the point where you picked off targets before you could even see them, and someone who used to purposely fly low to the ground to see if I could avoid all the buildings, this is freakin awesome!

@Shockwave Modern jets got to the point where you picked them off before you see them. And F21 will never be in a dogfight as represented by is game. It could, but then it failed in it's purpose. Ace Combat was good at balancing arcade with realism. This game looks like a departure from that into pure arcade. Call of Duty in the sky if you will.
We will see how it goes.

Probably a typo, but F-22, not 21.
And yeah, the F-22 has failed if the enemy aircraft can even see it (physically or on the radar) before it is destroyed.
I'm surprised they don't have the JSF (F-35) in there as well. One of them looked similar but it was carrying missiles on the wing.
It would also be pretty cool if Namco stuck the YF-23 in there since it was a neat looking jet.

@PSORngr yar a typo.
namco is usually pretty good about putting prototypes or non combat production jets in the game I am sure we will see a few.
The thing that made AC6 online cool was it was really class driven team warfare. you had long range snipers, fast run and gun guys who could bait people into the middle and mid rangers. AC6 was one of the first online games I really got into I'd like something other than who can do the most loops to get behind the other player for a missle kill.
like i said, i hope its good I just dont see how making everything close combat will help any flying series.
Also: Its not an AC game if you arent flying through an oil refinery.

@PSORngr That was the F35. It can be fitted with more payload on the wings if need be: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ec/F35ctolstores.jpg

@lastspeedbump Its hard for me to spot the differences in appearance between the two jets when they are in motion. Probably designed for higher payload versus speed I would think. The F22 doesn't really have a place in the wars going on today IMHO. I am sure there are clandestine battles going on though where it does.

There's not really any dog fighting going on these days. It just basically allows the US to keep air superiority. If you have something that can fly it needs to be able to drop massive payloads, like the F35 can, as well as fit on an aircraft carrier. There might be some time in the future when we need a plane such as the F22, but only time will tell. Other than that, it's just amazing to watch it fly...jet eye-candy at its finest.

I'm as big a Ace Combat fanboy as there is but I am not so spure about scrapping long range. The weapons are what the game is all about. Still, I am in regardless.

I could never get into any of the other Ace Combat's but this one, I'll have to keep an eye on it. Possibly a first-day purchase.

@TheHungryPanda lol my friends seriously thinks this is what it is like to be in the Air Force.
Anyway the games are ok, I honestly like flying all the way up then stalling in cockpit few until i hit the ground. That's all I ever do in their games lol.

@syrik zero I know seriously. I've never actually played an Ace Combat game (aside from some demos), but every time a new trailer comes out for this it gives me chills and my doubt about whether or not I want this fades further and further into nothingness. This game looks sick.

STEEL CARNAGE
So many explosions. I was almost expecting the pilot to eject and pull out a machine gun and start shooting as he was parachuting down as a new gameplay addition.
It's definitely going for the Split/Second crowd of a more arcade than simulation feel. Look cool though.

Give this game as good an ost as AC5 and I might just be making my second purchase into this series.

Shame to see them feel the need to go even more arcade, as the AC series was hardly realistic to begin with (I presume the handling on these planes will be ridiculously unrealistic, as I doubt they could make the gameplay work any other way), but it is a sign that gaming is becoming ever more mass-market, and that's a good thing :).

@Axe99
I think they logic is sound though. I'm not sure there is a big market for a hybrid like that. For the most part people will either want a simulation or something very close, or something very fun with lots of explosions and faced paced gameplay.

@Deschain Agreed, it makes good commercial sense. And I'm not dissing arcade flight games - I'm a huge fan of Afterburner:Climax - but the old AC games had enough depth to make going back and playing the different levels with different planes a different experience. This feels like it'll be a bit like CoD - a blast for the first few hours, and then a bit dull after.
Deffo wish success for the series, and will deffo be picking it up (hell, I even played HAWX 2!)

Hmm, I'm honestly not a fan of the new camera. Yeah, it's cool, but if it's going to slow-mo zoom on every plane like that, it's going to get really tiring really quick, particularly when I'm trying to focus on other things. It's like a Camera Navi. "HEY! LOOK! HEY! HEY!" The oil doesn't help, either.
Aside from that, the visuals are even better than AC6, which is saying something. The new environmental damage is a great touch, especially considering how AC has traditionally rendered the ground. Looks great, and I'll day-one it like I have every AC since 5.

i love flying game and wish they made more, but someone said it above this is going to be nothing more than Call of Duty in the skies, and will have little replay value. The whole point of Flying games is to have total control.

Never playied a AC before, but this I can't wait. Looks like a whole lot of fun! Hopefully a great multiplayer open world game or something!
Still dog figthing with afterburners seems to defeat the point of dogfights or even having a stealth airplane.

I'm not sure how I feel about this one. As stated before, it looks like they went too arcadey but I guess we'll see. And the camera system looks like it will get old really quickly...
