Want to get a sneak peek of some of the subject matter that'll likely be the focal point of Jane McGonigal's PAX East keynote speech? Well, the most thorough way to do so would likely be to read McGonigal's newest book, Reality Is Broken: Why Games Make Us Better and How They Can Change the World -- however, the fastest way would be to check out her interview on last night's episode of The Colbert Report.
She's got some pretty stellar ideas about how video games and the people who play them make the world a better place -- though Colbert can't help but take some jabs about both. Get all the "driving over hookers" and "Cheetos dust" jokes you can handle after the jump.

Yeah, I saw this today. I'm glad nobody else was in the room with me, or I would have ended up facepalming hard. She goes on and on about how great games are without once explaining why. She says that gamers should be encouraged to act in real life the way they do in their games - um, what? Has she ever seen someone play Grand Theft Auto? Or played even a single game on Xbox Live? Seeing someone on TV who was supposed to represent gamers say the phrase "epic win", though, had to be the worst part for me.

So an entire book she wrote and got published she should just explain? For one, not only is it difficult to do that in 3 or so minutes while still being comically jabbed at by Colbert, but it's also stupid because then you'd have no reason to buy the book.
I trust that the statistics are true, but the schema you use when actually reading those statistics may be a bit off base. She never clarified how strict the definition of gaming is so it could include very casual games like you find on app stores or on the web. Games may even include things like Wii Fit or something.
Also, while she may really mean it, I think the point about utilizing in game what you do in real life is more or less certain generalized skills, such as logic or communication, depending on the game you play.
I don't like her comments about time wasting and productivity, because there are still a decent number of human beings who don't get shit done because of video games, or could get more shit done wasting time on video games. Maybe my concession to that, however, is that the amount of hours she wanted the world to play was based off of a huge number of people playing for like, 1 hour, so I'm sure she understands that you can waste time, but I hope she actually makes a point about that.
If I'm going to pay attention by something supposedly backed up by science and proper statistics, however, I'd prefer a more academic/scientific-minded book, I'm sure her book is catered more to convince people rationally that games are not a loser's hobby.

In her book, I believe she specifies that co-op games being played in person with others are the most beneficial, and I think you'd agree that these are generally a better atmosphere than the typical XBL matchup.

Um, yes, she should explain her book. I watch Colbert every day, and plenty of his guests have managed to effectively summarize the content of their books over the course of his interview segment in such a way that they are actually communicating something of substance while still inviting viewers to buy the book. In this interview McGonigal communicated nothing of substance, merely out-of-context statistics and unsubstantiated (and unjustified!) claims.

Oh, geeze... I am happy she is trying to help us out and all, but c'mon. She is making it worse. I have never felt self conscience or embarrassed to be a gamer, but after listening to her, I think I should be.

@WMcPete why would you be embarrassed after listening to her?... cause she said a lot of people play video games?

gaming is one of the most productive pasttimes? She said it, not me. I like playing video games and all, but the increase in time she thinks the world should dedicate to gaming sounds a little weird to me. Listening to her from a non gaming perspective would make her and her ideas seem a little batty, I think.

@WMcPete Also, one of her main examples of positive game-related activities was a "game that helps cure cancer". I'm pretty sure she's talking about Folding@home. Which isn't so much a game as it is a program that happens to run on a PS3. So I'm fairly certain most of her facts are pretty skewed.

Sorry to go against the comment trend here, but I don't really think she did a bad job in this interview. She had 3 minutes to try to summarize the concept of her 20 minute TED talk, and she hit all the major notes while deflecting the playful jabs that Colbert is known for.
Watch her TED presentation, its fascinating:

I thought the interview was fine, but I always get shifty-bad-guy eyes when people like her laud gaming and use examples like the game that "helps cure cancer," or other experimental and scientifically funded games.
It always feels like justifying a Playboy subscription with the articles.

Judging by your avatar, I have to assuem you play a lot of JRPGs, now you can't expect a group of varied miscreants to fall out of the sky for you to form a group that will undergo many trials that will test your friendship in a very long and memorable journey to take down the bad guys ruling Russia.
I put Russia because I know your Russian. istalku

Defending games and praising their good qualities is an admirable thing to do, but she comes off as a video game fanatic. It was like watching a bad infomercial. Games can cure cancer! Games can make you a better person! And that's not all, they can julienne your fries while you sleep! The whole thing was a little embarrassing. Colbert is still the man though.

All the games she mentioned in her TED speech, which I think is an abstract of sorts of her book, are all ARGs, at least when she refers to games that are actually helping (like Evoke). I think she makes a bit of an unfounded jump when she apparently links those to games like WoW.

Everything Bad Is Good For You is a much better book that's written about the same exact topic years ago. Her explanations are kind of...off.
I really don't want people to act in the real world how they act in video games. Her perspective on people and video games are much too optimistic and unrealistic.

She isn't saying "GTA will make you a better person in real life" I saw her TED talk and she talked about educational games. She was saying something like Roller Coaster Tycoon will teach you how to build a theme park. She never said anything about FPS's. She also said 'epic win' so damn much, it was so damn annoying.

This is exactly the community that she wants to reach, but cant with your thinking. Although I'm going to get flamed and such I'm going to post Evoke, her last game.

There where to many jokes, but her main point is that if you look at life in the same way point or quest based manner and retry when you fail, you will accomplish more.
