Certainly not, but I think that speaks to the ugliness all the more.

DS Lite and DSi are so pretty. Why did that need to change?

I agree. The tapered top half, tri-tone color scheme (quad if you count the black around the screen on the inside of a non-black model), and non-matching analog stick make for one hideous machine. As I've said before, I'll have no problems holding out for revision 2.

It's sold more pre-orders that the Wii, and it has almost 8 weeks to go until it's launched worldwide (3 for Japan).

Nintendo are releasing 4 million units in one month and people are predicting massive shortages.

Good luck with your prediction.

Right. Because there's no difference between a movie in a theater in 3D and a portable glasses-free 3D device. None whatsoever.

to me it reminds me of a burger . . . a burger with a dark top bun (lots of sesame seeds) and a light bottom one, and some whacked out patty in the middle. It's pretty exciting. Now I have to get it. But I'm just afraid - if I do purchase this system - I'll find myself hungry everytime I play :O

Everything seems normal when it has a justified reason behind it for some reason. For example the whole Dark -> bright colour thing doesnt annoy me anymore now that i know its there to symbolise the screen, buttons and LED's and finally any symbols or lettering on the very bottom.

Now that its been explained to me the idea of not having one colour per console seems alot less..... stupid.

The first two colors i can handle, but 3? It doesn't look that pleasing to the eye. Are they doing this for the blue colored one too? I really like the tapered edges though, makes it look a lot better than the basic looking DS handhelds

IMO the edge view - that shot above - with the three colours looks really great, at least for the black one shown. Very stylish. You can really see why they thought it was a good idea; and it's quite original, compared to other current electronics. And the different size of each layer is interesting too.

I'm sure the battery cover is great and the top of the system (complete with new anti-fingerprint layer, apparently) is nice as well...

So, the only problem really is that as soon as you open it up, it's an ugly mess. :)

Still, it's not as ugly as DS Phat.

And some of that ugly isn't the designers' fault; you can tell they did things to make it easier/nicer to use rather than visually appealing. For example, the thing in that interview about the six LEDs being placed logically instead of in a line which would look nicer. The bit where they carefully avoided saying in public, wtf are you thinking with six LEDs, can we get rid of at least half of these please - oh and while you're there, we totally do not need those extra buttons below the screen - and - etc. :)

@FireRisinWith1n

When I first saw the early E3 shots of it and they were two colors my first thought was, "Uh... why is it two colors? Why can't it just be one pretty solid color?"

Now that I know it's three colors, it's just... yeah. It looks neat in the image above, but I wouldn't want any of my devices to be multicolored like that. I don't mind using a slightly different color to highlight certain areas (like recessed portions with buttons), but two have a device that's black and gray when you open it, and then a batter cover that's a third shade of gray just seems odd to me. Could just be cause I'm already used to seeing solid color devices so much and this difference is too foreign, but me not likely so much.

Coloured first-gen GB's were nice.
First (and only ) gen GBC was nice.
First GBA was nice, they all were.

It's just the DS and 3DS that are ugly. Your little formula is WRONG.

I do, the DS Phat is what I think of when I think of a DS. Though I personally use my black DSi. The original GBA and GB were hideous, but I loved the hell out of them. The more attractive refined younger siblings didn't seem as memorable.

The problem there is the iPad actually has a long battery life. So do the new Macbook Pros (10 hours fffff).

Now if you said you were typing it on an iPhone or iPod then you'd have a valid point.

You can't have a gradient color scheme while also making an intermediate layer thinner/less wide than the next. That's one of my problems with this thing's look: Aside from it already not looking solid, it looks uneven.

If they took an Oreo approach to it, making the top and bottom layers the same color with a lighter one in the middle, that /may/ have been acceptable, given that the bottom half's face part fits inside the back part (like a mint tin turned upside down*), but the gradual color lightening clashes with the large-small-medium progression of the chassis.

And then there's the matter of two different colors around the screens. My DS Lite has it right, where the interior is all the same color, with the outside (in its case, the top's exterior) taking a different color. It's much more consistent, and helps to bring focus to the screens rather than their framing.

The 3DS looks, at best, awkward to be, and I'll definitely be holding out the see if they come out with something that looks more solid.

*If anything is related to a mint tin, that already docks some points for thickness/sturdiness confidence.
