NPD: 2010's bestselling game releases by platform
34
Gamasutra has obtained NPD data that puts a new filter on last year's US box-copy software sales, ranking the top ten bestselling 2010 releases for each console and handheld platform (PC excluded). Like the monthly NPD breakdowns, these rankings don't include actual sales numbers, but they do reveal some interesting trends.
By omitting Nintendo's so-called "evergreen" titles (i.e., games released before 2010), Gamasutra found that -- perhaps unsurprisingly -- Just Dance 2 was last year's top-selling 2010 release for Wii, and among six additional third-party games that made the top ten in sales for the platform. On DS, however, Nintendo games filled out half of the top ten, and Pokemon SoulSilver and HeartGold were the only titles to surpass sales of one million units each.
At first glance, PSP software sales look even bleaker, with Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep on top and, according to Gamastura, the only PSP title to break 300K units sold; with the other top ten games each falling below 200K. Of course, these rankings don't include digital sales or box-copy games bundled with hardware, so it's unlikely that Birth by Sleep (which isn't available on the PlayStation Store) was the true #1 bestseller among 2010's PSP releases -- let alone the most pirated.
What is certain is that Call of Duty: Black Ops dominated torrents, as well as the games legitimately sold for PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2010. Still, both Sony and Microsoft saw two first-party releases make their console's respective top ten sales charts for the year; though each publisher's most critically-acclaimed release of 2010 -- at least, from Joystiq's perspective -- was not present. Perhaps telling of the two console's core player bases, Madden 11 beat out God of War 3 for the #2 spot on the PS3 chart, but fell to #3 beneath Halo: Reach in the Xbox 360 ranking.
Finally, we have to wonder just what were they thinking? They, of course, being all those Xbox 360 owners that purchased Fable 3 and Fallout: New Vegas instead of Mass Effect 2. Three and a half stars plus four still doesn't add up to the Game of the Year, people.

The most interesting part of the article was that Wipeout was in the top ten. I had no idea.

@Jack Kevorkian I cringe when my girlfriend made me get it. But to my surprise it was a passable fun game. Not something I would personally get but I had enough fun playing it with her to make to worth it.
But as you can guess, is short in contect in all honesty. Still I am not saying to get it...but if your significant other makes you get it, you might not have such a bad time playing it xP

Strange that there was no legal issue concerning Wipeout: The game on Wii.

@Pure Black World Tendency why, is it not licensed by ABC?

I think he was referring to WipEout, Sony's racing game. I don't think you can trademark an everyday word. This is why all the Petz games have a z in them.

@SuperWoody64 But what if Nintendo made a Beyonce karaoke game named Halo: the game?

It would have been nice to see ME2 a little higher, but at least it was in the top 10, deservedly!

i feel like i'm the only person who hated pretty much all the changes they made from ME1. ammo, using a power initiates a cooldown on ALL you powers, fewer abilities, way fewer weapons and upgrade paths, and i could go on. it's still good, i just liked the first one way more.

I'd take either Fallout: New Vegas or Fable 3 over ME2 any day of the week, personally.

Well, apparently you aren't alone as the list shows.

I had a feeling I'd be voted down for that opinion. That said, here's my reasoning.
I felt that ME2 was a lot weaker plot-wise than its predecessor. Doing what seemed like bitchwork for my crew members got old extremely quickly and the final suicide mission was underwhelming, to say the least. I had absolutely no desire to play the game against once I beat it. The gameplay was improved but the motivation to keep going wasn't there for me. It was bad enough that I'm probably going to wait for a price drop on ME3 before picking it up.
Fable 3 was disappointing for different reasons, but I'm still having fun playing co-op in that where I haven't touched ME2 in months. And New Vegas has content to go on forever.
That said, either RDR or Just Cause 2 would have to be my game of the year. RDR was simply amazing all around and blowing things up in Just Cause 2 is fun enough to make up for the lack of plot and terrible voice acting.

@Rollins I thought the voice acting and plot in JC2 perfectly fit the mood of the game. The mood being awesome. I enjoyed the ciche Texan, Latin superman, evil dictator and Asian slutbag.

I don't often purchase my games based on star ratings or GotY awards. I purchase them based on the scenarios I want to play in. In that light, comparing Fallout, Fable, and Mass Effect is completely pointless. If I feel like playing a medieval fantasy game with swords and sorcery, I wont be reaching for Mass Effect 2 at that given moment.

I'm one of the dirty scoundrels who has not finished ME1, so I haven't played ME2.
I should go back and read the reviews, but is skipping Mass Effect 1 an unforgivable sin to get to Mass Effect 2?

What Bioware was able to do with their "interactive comic" in the PS3 version of ME2 was really impressive. They didn't have to put that in there and went above expectations. That being said, you obviously don't quite get the same scope and immersion you would with completely playing the first game. If you have a PC or 360, I would definitely recommend playing through ME1. If you only have a PS3, you still get a great experience and will learn about the ME universe and back story.

Call of Duty is an absolute monster! MW2 was still in the top 10 this year? That's craziness. For every one person that complains about the games there are about 100 other people that buy them, or so it seems.

ME2 might have been your game of the year Joystiq but it wasn't mine. RDR got that vote.

I bought Fable 3 and Fallout:NV on the 360 but not Mass Effect 2. I did not buy it on the 360 because I bought it for the PC. I bought it on the PC because I played the original on the PC. That's what I was thinking - maybe that's what they were thinking too =)

@wightlight - Agreed, ME1/2 feel best on the PC for me despite how ME2 is improved on the consoles. Still with all the press buzz on ME2 I was expecting it to finish higher. Is seems the gaming press unfortunately does not have as much sway as I thought.

fable 3 would have benefited greatly from the aggressive pricing around black friday where the game could be had for $29-39 when it was still "fresh".
Posted: Feb 7th 2011 3:25PM laser beams said
@fid to be honest- you could say that about just about any Xbox exclusive last year. i either bought or saw on store shelves, almost every major exclusive for about half price within the first 2 or 3 months of release. it's how i picked up Mass Effect 2 in late March for $26.99, new from Amazon and how i got Splinter Cell: Conviction for $19.99 at Best Buy in May. i saw Alan Wake priced at about $34.99 all over the place (online and retail) last summer. it's hard to predict what will appeal to people- and the time of a games release window probably has a major impact on it's annual sales- but i'm not sure if the aggressive pricing alone helped certain titles more than it did others.

I'm one of those people who bought New Vegas and not ME2. I loved Fallout 3, but I wasn't a big fan of the first Mass Effect. I've been meaning to pick up ME2, though, as I hear it plays quite differently.
