I was watching this guy's videos both on youtube and on I believe the overclock UK forums, where he initially posted about the problem of no customization.

It's pretty amazing to watch him do his thing. Also kinda put me in my place a little bit, thinking about every time I complained about something that really doesn't matter, when I thought about how much he has to put up with just to game.

Also, most of the replies he got regarding his situation was all fellow gamers telling him how awesome he is and trying to help him out. Our worldwide community sometimes brings a tear to my eye :)

@Sordid State of Eclairs I take care of a kid with cerebral palsy and he plays games with a custom controller and it's crazy to me that he's able to play them fine even though he can't really move his arms or hands.

That's awesome :) It's amazing what will and spirit (and enjoyment of a past time) can do.

It reminded me a bit of NoM4D, watching this guy's videos. That dude who got them to patch Call of Duty and to this day has his own button layout.

How old is the dude you take care of?

@Sordid State of Eclairs

I have the same disease that Joker from Mass Effect has.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osteogenesis_Imperfecta#Society_and_culture

It seems to me that having a disability leads to developments in the brain that might not usually used. Sort of like how they say that blind people hear better. Or how Joker is this prodigious pilot but can't walk. Or using your chin to play video games.

It may be coincidence, but I ended up with a fast brain. Almost too fast. Lots of people couldn't understand me when I was a kid. I can say all fifty states in fifteen seconds, and that' how I used to talk when I was excited about something, which was always because I'm easily excitable. So, what I did was I spent most of my time playing video games, learning to write and perform music. And I think I ended up being able to do things that most wouldn't normally be able to do despite not being able to some things that I'd like to be able to do.

Regarding your point about being 'put in your place' for the trivial things you complain about, everybody complains about trivial nonsense. But it's good to understand how spoiled we are.

One of the perks of having OI was going twice a week to physical therapy because I was able to leave school really early on those days. I saw a lot of kids going there whose mobility problems were much worse than mine and I think some of them may have had conditions where they probably didn't live a whole lot longer, but when something like that happens to you at a young age or you're born with it, the same mechanisms behind the development of the brain that help kids learn at a higher rate than adults makes it easier for them to adapt to problems as well and cope with them.

What I can say about all those kids in the physical therapy class that I met was that they were just normal kids, every single one of them. They weren’t wallowing away in self pity. They were just being kids. Most people have a really high capacity for endurance and bravery, but they aren't aware of it because they haven't been put in a position to understand what they're really made of.

Case in point: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=je66DZHqtPQ

Note the part at 1:36 about the video game.

Reading such as what you wrote about yourself puts a lot in perspective. I've got it lucky, dude :/ Some times it's easy to lose sight of that.

Off topic from that, I recently learned Mass Effect is also a medical term, which must be where the docs borrowed the name of the game from. Trivia!

Regarding the link you provided, I thought the kid was neat. I won't say I can't imagine having to face something along the lines of what he was at such a young age, knowing I will probably never have to. Brave kid, though.

That's pretty cool about the music, as well :) I also play and write. Guitar, mostly, myself.

That's because the dark side of our community is too busy playing Black Ops/Reach

Yeah, I went there.

(That's not to say anyone that plays either of those games is a jackass, but most of them are)

Look i don´t have anything against this guy, he is a player and deserves to play....however i don´t understand why only handicap people is always heared when something like this happens??? i can assure you that if the complains where from a "normal" user EA would have never ever heard the problem or fixed it. So maybe he should give us a hand and complain too that the DLC for the p.c. version is not available, ohhh!!! and another extra please!!!! please complain to capcom for the stupid bug with dead rising 2 for the p.c. that doesn´t allow you to use a wireless x box controller only a wired one and that it was never EVER fixed.....

I get what you're saying, I guess.

If I had to choose between whether I had to wait for dlc or the full use of my body though, I think I can handle waiting for dlc. It's not nearly as important as Gareth's concerns.

A lot of companies listen to their fans and then turn around and screw them.

At first I thought they were adding a special control sceme for this guy and I was like "Isn't this kind of pandering?" Then I saw that it was allowing custom control schemes and I thought all PC games had that so I was equally confused for a moment.... Does it take that much work to add customizable controls that Visceral decided that it just wasn't worth it? I mean Dead Space 2 utilizes what, 15 buttons tops? Yeah, that would've been hard to open up to the player.

Remapping should be standard on consoles, too, from the system software rather than the actual games. Beyond the disability advantage - which is no small thing - there are several arcade games (Final Fight key among them) that I can't remap to work with my fighting stick.

@DokiDokiBawanga

and why he should wait??? WE paid in cash for the game too, just because we are not handicapped we should not be listened??? As i said before, companies always do this " we are good" thing with special people just to have a " nice" image, but i´m sure we all agree that even though this was a nice gesture it was done only because a person with a problem did the request..... and that´s not fair, it´s not fair in a world were we ALL should be equal. i´m glad that he got his fix, but it´s not fair that this was done only as a way to show a nice image and not really because they were hearing to the people who PAID FOR A PRODUCT, i just hope he complains about the DLC too. Maybe then viceral will make it available for the p.c.

@MLS

This dude has a legitimate reason to ask for button remapping, a feature that is in most other PC games.

on the other hand, most of us have had a broken game or system at one point and none of us have had it replaced because we are not cute cute girls. Also they drew her a cutesy comic and signed a new free copy of the game, while nice it's a bit much and easy to see through.

The Blu-ray drive broke on my PS3 and no one sent me a new newly signed PS3 and comic. should I have blamed it on my dog?

Well did your dog play a role in your PS3 breaking? Different situation. Why are you locked into the idea that "cuteness" factored in? You're framing the question to suit an ideology, that people will only help cute girls (which in this case is kinda crazy because I haven't seen a picture of her anywhere, and the language in her tweet sure wasn't cute). I can just as well say Visceral only helped this guy just because he's disabled, and it was all a big PR stunt; because big companies only care about public image and the bottom line.

Stop pretending that people don't do good deeds every now and then. I've gotten hand-written thank you notes packed with my ebay purchases before. It's not such a pain to take three minutes and draw a sketch to personalize what would have otherwise been a business standard package. What makes you think that if it had been a 19-24 year old male, they wouldn't have drawn him a picture too (only made it badass instead of cute)?

Whatever it is that makes you think that, reject it, because it doesn't help you in life, it just makes you cynical. Maybe take a moment out of your life to make someone's day better once and a while instead of judging others for doing so. Or maybe just stop whining about the plight of the healthy white American male not getting a fair shake.

What is Visceral doing, in the past week they seem to be going for the most compassionate/thoughtful/human gaming company on the planet. They may not even make sense, but I had DS 1 lying around and just played through it twice and am picking up DS 2 this weekend...I think it's because of the way Visceral seems to be acknowledging and reaching out to fans. Consumerism is real, Visceral deserves support (to bad they are part of EA).
