Now that our whole intro is shot, we'll get right to the point: Ben Heckendorn has used his Frankenstein-like ability to create new life from old, defunct consoles to make handheld console out of the Sega CDX, making the dream of subterranean Sewer Shark possible. As you can see in the image above, it's quite small -- the portable taps an old camcorder battery for power, a gutted Genesis pad for the controls and a four-inch LCD screen for the display. It's an impressive mod (as the majority of Ben Heck's work is), whose creation is documented in the video just past the break.
Ben Heck builds a portable Sega CDX

Remember how when you were a kid, your parents would see you playing video games for hours and force you to go outside and "get some fresh air," whatever that meant? Remember how you would then sneak down into the sewers and pretend you were playing Sewer Shark? Remember that? Uh, you have no idea what we're talking about, do you? Great, now we look like a bunch of weirdos.

@Chanka How exactly is this useless? Since when did the PSP start offering the SegaCD library? No seriously... SegaCD was the best system evar and I'd love to play Supreme Warrior, Snatcher, Lunar, Sonic CD, Road Avenger, and Double Switch on a PSP.

I think a couple of pictures of the thing would have done just fine =/

CDX is already portable. It already ran on batteries. You could keep it strapped to you, plug in a Genesis controller, plug it to the TV, and play.
It just didn't have a screen.
CDX consoles are incredibly rare today. Brand new they will get around $300. It also played Genesis games. So you had a portable Genesis, as well.

I would assume the terrible battery life prevented the CDX from being a viable portable console, after all Sega consoles were infamous for their battery consumption.

alkaline batteries were definitely a must for SEGA's old handheld though they were expensive. But batteries overall sucked in the 90s I opened up a Game Gear rechargeable battery pack to find it only had a 1300 mAH Ni-Cd battery inside, no wonder you would be lucky to get an hour's play off of it. I refitted the battery pack with a 2400 mAH and haven't had a need to recharge it since.

Don't any of you see? It's a cry for help. This guy is very talented but extremely bored and needs something meaningful to do. He is running out of consoles people!. Can we get him a job at a cool company please? Or at least in the employ of a superhero or supervillian?

Eh, I won't be impressed with Ben Heck until he turns a Sega Nomad into a fully functional armoire.
In all seriousness this is awesome and I now have an overwhelming urge to dig out my copy of Dark Wizard.

When I was a kid, I bought Sewer Shark because it was 25 cents at FuncoLand.
It may not have been the best use of my 25 cents, but I still made worse decisions over the course of my childhood.

Am I the only one who enjoyed Sewer Shark? Sure, the gameplay was mediocre, but the cut scenes were Grade A camp (if you can call a B-movie anything grade A).
Other favorites:
-Silpheed
-Ecco
-Wirehead (starring the guy who got his nose bitten off by the Penguin in Batman Returns)
-Road Rash (starring Soundgarden)
-Lunar SSS

I miss SILPHEED. I wish they would remake that with a current console. That was one of my favorites. I think as it was so bleeding edge tech at the time, so many polygons when you would shoot a ship.
Fond memories of ECCO too.

Some beauty shots of the completed device would've spiced up the video in a "Pimp My Ride" kinda way. Still, the ending is hilarious.
