More like holy crap, didn't see that coming.

I loved Guitar Hero. I wish Activision had never gotten a hold of the franchise.

Its not like Activision doesn't make piles of money off of CoD, then to add in owning Blizzard Entertainment and their MMO mammoth World of Warcraft that currently pulls in over 2 biullion a year worldwide on its own too? Geez!! I understand cutting the losses of individual IPs if they are not making money, it is a business afterall, but I mean.....seriously Activision?

Nope, first couple GH's are good but 5 and beyond are horrible. World Tour was the last good one.

True Crime on the PS2 were two of my favorite games on the console. Sure they had issues but they were awesome games, not to mention the first one featured two songs from my favorite music group of all time. I was really looking forward to True Crime HK and it sucks if it really is cancelled. However, United Front's Mod Nation game was rediculously hard so if True Crime Hong Kong would have been too, then I guess it's a good thing.

@DWilson8504 True Crime: Streets of LA is one of my favourite games ever. I still have the Gamecube version. New York was a massive disappointment, but I was more hopeful of Hong Kong.

As for Guitar Hero's death... good.

Don't hate on DJ Hero. That was a fresh take on the genre that required some creativity in its music selection/creation.

Hope we still get a DJ Hero 3.

@DWilson8504 And DJ Hero?

I personally consider DJ Hero to be one of the best recent new series. It's not been disgustingly milked (yet) and it's miles from where Guitar Hero is.

Calling World Tour the "last good Guitar Hero game" is so far from being true that it's not even funny.

I have played every single Guitar Hero game and spinoff, and World Tour was easily the worst. It was Activisions's shoddy attempt to rip off Rock Band, and they messed it up bad. However, GH5 improved on it greatly, and it's probably the best Activision-made Guitar Hero game. Warriors of Rock was enjoyable as well, with a good setlist, but Rock Band 3 was so much better than it that it's hard to even compare the two.

True Crime New York was not a dissappointment at all unless you do what most gamers do and over hype yourself. I am never dissappointed by games. I don't waste time overhyping myself, instead I enjoy them for what they are.

With that said New York had the better story and better structure of gameplay, yes it was glitchy but it wasn't unplayable by any means. It was an awesome game. I would however, put the two True Crimes on the same level of awesomeness.

As far as Guitar Hero, I am talking merely music here. The gameplay has remained largely the same and I never used any of the other features so I don't care about those. I'm talking merely, get some friends together and play some awesome songs. Anything beyond Guitar Hero World Tour had crap music in it for the most part so by default the games sucked regardless of anything else.

As for DJ Hero, there was potential to be great however, DJ-ing is a niche, very niche hobby/job/whatever you want to call it so I'm not surprised they aren't nearly as popular as GH series. Yes DJ Hero is a new take but again the music sucks in it. The mashups make no sense for the most part and most of the music is crap anyway. Or they put a lot of great songs with crap songs so IMO it ruins it.

@Ample Salty

The real question is what happens to those bands that signed exclusivity contracts with a now-dead series, like RHCP and Soundgarden, which caused previously licensed songs to be MIA for Rock Band 3.

Maybe Activision will sell the rights for all the Guitar Hero stuff to the holding company that fronted Harmonix the dough? With the position of "We are the only ones that make music games, at all", that market would be a lot more stable.

I think that the holding company in question is probably still dealing with sticker shock. I could see them grabbing something that could provide a major new venue stream (like DJ Hero and its content), but a bulk purchase of GH music licenses would probably not bring in enough revenue to justify the cost. Many of the people who are into the series enough to buy substantial DLC already have both the relevant GH and RB games and wouldn't shell out money to play content they already own in another game.

@BleachMan Look at the wording. It's not dead, they just stopped leaning on Guitar Hero like it was a license to print money. The 2011 edition is cancelled.

Ugh, this is why you fail, Activision. Stop annualizing everything now before it's too late.This and Tony Hawk, you saturate genres you own to the point where people have no interest anymore.

You do realize that recently, you put out SO many Guitar Hero games, that you actually gave out as a preorder bonus for a Guitar Hero game yet ANOTHER new Guitar Hero game, right..? And you wonder why there are "continued declines in the music genre". You killed it, you killed it with your fat greedy hands!

Huh. The Guitar Hero part may be great news for Harmonix. Rock Band and Guitar Hero have been cannibalizing each other's sales for years with 90% similar products. If Rock Band is all that's left standing they won't be able to climb back to their old sales for the franchise, but it will give the series a much stronger chance at survival.

Guitar Hero was milked and beaten to death until the fun was gone.

And by Activision standards, killing the franchise off means giving it a year or two hiatus before the milking continues.

Even knowing this, why am I still sad to see it go?

So the developers get laid off and the people that killed what was once a great franchise not only don't suffer any consequences, but they'll still be reveling in profits and simply move on to kill the next milked franchise, make MORE money, and cost more people their jobs.

I don't believe capitalism is evil, but stories like this make you wonder.

@False

Yeah I don't think Capitalism is good or evil. It's a mechanism.
Unfortunately, this mechanism often incorporates greed, which in term leads to unsustainable growth, and ultimately, collapse.

Like others said, GH should have been put out to pasture a few iterations ago.
