Selected in December as Mod DB's annual "Best Upcoming Mod," Dear Esther is actually a remake of a 2008 Half-Life 2 Source-engine mod by the same name. The original mod was developed by indie studio thechineseroom (at the University of Portsmouth, UK) and was "stumbled across" by Robert Briscoe, a former level designer at DICE who had worked on Mirror's Edge. While "far from perfect," Dear Esther had both intrigued and inspired Briscoe, he wrote in May 2009, describing it as "an interactive painting or story, told through the eyes of a dying man on a journey to try and make peace with his tormented mind."
"The whole thing is enveloped in deep mystery and hidden meanings," he continued, "I had the idea of taking the groundwork for the mod and develop [sic] it into a fully fledged, production-quality product." Briscoe took his idea to the original creative director Dan Pinchbeck, who "was very enthusiastic about it, giving me his full support on the project."
21 months of steady development later and the Dear Esther remake is on track for a commercial release this summer on Steam. That's right -- Pinchbeck and Briscoe approached Valve, which was "impressed enough to grant a Source license for a full independent release," recounts today's announcement (oddly dated July 30, 2010) on the just launched dear-esther.com. "Rob was creating something so extraordinary," Pinchbeck told PC Gamer UK in the new issue (via Beefjack), "[that] it deserved a wider audience than we could give it as a mod."
You can get a glimpse of Briscoe's recreation in the June 2010 test footage postead after the break.

The narration and music made the game. When I first started playing it I totally didn't understand the purpose of the game. Especially getting towards the end, it's extremely atmospheric and amazingly done.
One thing I noticed was that the graphics held it back particularly in the open world exploration bit, which wasn't quite as open or interesting as I would have hoped. The sense of isolation is still very much there though.
Here's a link in case anyone wants to play the original mod: http://www.fileplanet.com/196430/190000/fileinfo/Half-Life-2---Dear-Esther-Mod-v1.1

I really can't see any way this remake can't be amazing if they keep basically all the same stuff from the original besides graphics. Unless no one can run it of course; I've never seen a source game even close to this detailed before, even Portal 2 falls way short of those caves.

Ooh! I played the original and it had problems but the atmosphere, music, and narration propelled it from what could have been an annoying experience to something unforgettable. Bring the remake on.

Hold on hold on hold on!!!
So this Robert Briscoe character was looking around the internet and found a decent mod. At which point he stole said mod and started to make it into it's own game?
Whoever wrote that article did a terrible job at explaining just how Briscoe acquired the permission to remake the mod.

I wish I had been able to play the original, for comparison's sake, before it was taken down from ModDB. I love the idea of telling a suspenseful story in first person without having to eventually resort to combat. The atmosphere of this game looks incredible, I'm really looking forward to it.

not a single space marine in sight, and surely they could spruce up the narration by throwing in "dick-tits"...the dude-bros will not approve.

man this game looks pretty. reminds of a source remake of the first half life, i think it was called black mesa source, anyway this has gotten me excited for Half life episode 3, really really hope there is an announcement for HL3 somewhere on the portal 2 disc.

Dear Esther was one of only three post-2001 games included in the book I'm writing on the history of game storytelling. It's absolutely incredible. Narrowly constructed, and certainly not for everyone, but there's nothing else like it in the gaming sphere.
I was bummed that the original was taken down in preparation for this re-release, but it's understandable. I'm definitely supporting the upgrade.

It's times like this I'm reminded why I love Valve above all others. "Hey, we've got this awesome idea for a game Valve, we want to buy a license to use Source in it." "Buy? This shit is awesome, have it for free!"
Now if only they'd get Ep3 out the door and do some more L4D2 content.

why does everyone keep saying the original was taken down? I found it within five seconds of googling. Now if only I had some idea of what the hell was going on
