Update: Dead Island publisher Deep Silver states that, contrary to earlier reports, the rights to a film adaptation of Dead Island have not been sold -- though it claims to have received "a vast amount of inquiries" following the game's buzz-building trailer.
"We are looking for quality above all else for a movie based on Dead Island," says Klemens Kundratitz, CEO of Koch Media (parent company of Deep Silver). "We want to do it the right way as film realizations of games (or vice versa) usually fail to deliver what the fans were looking for." The goal, according to Kundratitz, is to "work with someone who already has a proven track record with blockbuster movies." That doesn't necessarily rule out Union Entertainment, which was rumored to have already purchased the rights, but it sounds like the IP-holder is still evaluating all potential silver-screen suitors.
As mentioned in the original story below, you're not likely to see any Dead Island movie (if there is one) until well after the game's launch later this year. How about holding your horses for a bit, Hollywood?
Original story: Though Techland has already gotten a popular film out of its upcoming Dead Island game -- it was called "the trailer" -- one can presume that Hollywood's looking to sell something a bit longer (and more chronological, the test audiences will insist). The Wrap reports that the movie rights were already secured by the Sean Daniel Company and Union Entertainment in 2009, years before the zombie-infested horror game stepped back into the spotlight.
Union Entertainment, a talent management and production company focusing on video games, helped facilitate the creation of the first game based on The Darkness comic book series. It was also involved with The Red Star, a PlayStation 2 game based on the graphic novel of the same name and, according to The Wrap, currently holds the movie rights to Techland's Western shooter, Call of Juarez.
Dead Island is connected to producer Sean Daniel (Dazed and Confused, The Mummy, Pootie Tang), but there's no indication that it's progressed enough to even warrant a script writer yet. In other words, we'll find out if the game is as good as the trailer well before we decide whether the film ... is as good as the game.

If it is half as good as Pootie Tang we are all in for a real treat.

Is this the game with the allegedly super disturbing trailer?

@MLS
I do agree. I appreciate great game trailers, but I don't like ones that deliberately try to pull the strings.
-Blonde girl (to brown haired parents) dies, because as Family Guy pointed out it's always more tragic if little blonde girls die.
-Reversed footage for the sake of it.
-Overly gory to L4D2's comical levels.
-Gentle piano song becau =EMOTIONS
-you KNOW the game isn't going to play anything like that.
But, everyone laps it up.
The last really good trailer was the GTAIV one where that main guy walks towards the camera. Got the game across perfectly, was stylishly done without being overtly so and gave you a good impression of what the game was. You know... the whole purpose of trailers...

It's "super disturbing" because you watch a little girl get mauled on by zombies and thrown out a window in reverse. To me it was hilarious.

That's the worst kind of snobbishness; snobbishness for the sake of snobbishness....
OH LOOK! VeeDeeVee noticed that they used music that effectively communicates an emotion! THAT MEANS IT SUCKS!
So what?! You noticed it for a reason, of course they wanted to pull at your heartstrings, they're setting up the feel for their game. And their choice in characters? I don't know about you but when I think of island getaways, that family seemed like the poster child for them. They look like they're straight out of a cruise pamphlet, which just goes to show that the Dead Island developers are going for a gritty realism and lets not forget that it's a trailer, who knows who else is on that island.
Man, something about your snobbishness just really grinds my gears.

looks like it sucks, but they did already make a movie with that name, they aren't just squatting on the rights.

Damn, at least wait for the game to come out before you made a crappy movie about it.

Maybe they'll make a dark emotional drama that circulates around the horrors of zombie infestations

This game went from literally nothing to being everywhere in a couple of minutes based solely on a trailer. So unreal. Might be a record for fastest movie cash-in though. congrats.

Actually this game has been in development for sometime before the zombie craze really caught fire, remember the screenshot, but thanks for trying...
As for all of us 'lapping' up the trailer, name one trailer that made a game that no one was talking about-talk about, GTA doesn't count given the amount of hype it was given... I would say the trailer did its job more so than any i can remember whether cliche or not. I am sure you have never done anything of merit so that is why you dont like it

Why would you want the right to a film like that when you could just rip it off and change and re-organize the plot and locations?
seriously there are some LAZY producers out there

Anyone think that the (gorgeous) music from the trailer is akin to that founded on the popular spinster's tear-fest, "Grey's Anatomy"?
I could just imagine Dr Grey narrating over the slow-mo like she does at the beginning if each ep. This would also be an ironic wink at the name of the show itself, considering the content if the game (trailer).
