When I watched it happen I was blown away by the amount of detail and how smooth the transition was in the animation. For all their effort just for that short amount of time I would say it was definitely worth it. Very memorable way to start a game.

Fantastic job on the article Mr. Kietzmann.

Amazing how something so short took so long to make. After playing that part. I see that the end result was totally worth all the effort.

I did not like the beginning. I prefer a slow opening building the tension. When you stick the monster right in my face it becomes much less scary since my imagination is much worse than anything they could show.

DS2 is more story and action driven than horror per se. It still is horror in that the setting, atmosphere, and enemies are scary, but it's not as suspense-driven as DS1 was.

@Greg0fTheDead

Not necessarily, there are plenty of types of horror ranging from suspense (The Shining), fantasy (Dracula, Frankenstein), supernatural (Exorcist), slasher (Friday the 13th) and psychological (The 6th Sense).

Gore can be an element, especially in splatter films, but even slasher films don't necessarily need gore as evidenced by the first Halloween movie, one of the movies responsible for establishing the rules of the slasher genre (Texas Chainsaw, Black Christmas and Psycho being the others).

Blood, guts and barf-bag moments (like The Thing and Blob remakes) are only one color in the horror color palette.

not always. sometimes the things you don't see are more frightening than seeing someone get eviscerated with a chainsaw...

err, should have read your comment first. well said, though it may also be noted that the original texas chainsaw massacre was not very gory at all as it relied more on camera tricks and the viewers imagination to frighten.

That is often confused, but I don't think it is in this case. While there is MUHCO gore in this scene, I'd say what makes it more horror driven is the fact that you CANT. DO. ANYTHING... at least that's what it was for me. You see, I played DS1 and I was constantly running away from necromorphs because I played at higher difficulties and was offered less ammo.

Actually, you might be right. My fear of this scene was a direct connection from the last game... so I guess the point of suspense building was built between the two, and perhaps thats why this actually is horror. They built up suspense from the last game.

It really depends on how you go about it though. The slow building tension in Dead Space 1 worked great because we had no idea what was happening, it was a new experience and thus it frightened us. We never knew what to expect. In Dead Space 2 however you can't follow the same model. Because we the gamer know what the expect from experiences in the first game, to follow another slow building tension formula would end up playing a bit boring.

I believe that big, frantic beginning did a great job of bringing back the thrill and horror. We know what we are dealing with, however to be caught off guard like that when you are defenseless, and witnessing the start of the outbreak, not the aftermath, there is a new level of fear that plays out.

In the first game we feared the shadows while trying to accomplish our mission, in this game it's about being on the run and just trying to get out. Without this difference in horror styles between both games, I think that DS2 would have felt too much like a soulless rehash instead of a frantic, thrilling adventure into the heart of darkness.

Allow me to be the minority voice here. In most games movies etc, they build upon a growing fear of the unknown. In Dead Space 2 you're supposed to know the unknown. What you don't know is running from it. Straight jacket and all.

It's a splurge intro that actually many writers draw from. Tom Clansy starts his books with a bang. Hell Star Wars starts with a bang.DS2 is one of the few games that pits your wits from the get go and doesn't relent for few moments. If the first minutes of DS2 doesn't get you going then you don't have a pulse.

@PieceMaekr42 I feel like i'm hearing Yathzee. The douche bag isn't always right. So what he felt sympathetic on the villagers in RE4 but he didn't on the black people of RE5?

Go back and play Alan Wake and keep building that non-existant tension you're talking about.

Actually it's one frame in DS2 as well. This is just a scripted scene. Course you don't really notice in the gameplay anyways, and there's more types of slashers that certain bodies can turn into.

I think this every time Joystiq posts something. Furthermore, these videos and documentary segments are really nothing more than PR and marketing vehicles. We care about them because we care about the product, but its basic marketing.

With that said, why do we have to watch marketing for something completely unrelated in order to watch the marketing for the product we like?

It depends on who is receiving the ad revenue. I don't really know if Joystiq is the one that opts into the ads and therefore receives compensation or if EA does.

Either way a 30 second ad for a 1 minute video is nonsense.

But as someone who hasn't played the game yet, and someone who has avoided most knowledge of the game, my first reaction was just what I posted.

Glad to hear it's not actually any kind of a deal.

I have to say, I didn't know anything about this game. I stayed away from all the previews because I liked Dead Space 1 so much. This intro completely took me aback. I wasn't expecting to get completely, shocked/grossed out. This was a very interesting article to read. Thanks Joystiq.

One of the reasons I love DS2 so much is that is pays homage to all the sci-fi/horror tropes in such an awesome way. The opening is just one of them. My favorite part of this sequence is Franco's last line:

"Isaac, you are in terrible terrible da-gaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!"

Right up there with Samuel L. getting nommed by a killer shark.

Being part of that minority group, I think this style of depth and amount of work that went into it more than makes up for it. They have a great track record for representation, too. Just look at the security officer from the first game.

SPOILER ALERT

He survives for a heck of a long time before he gets killed (and he was a protagonist). Similarly, one of the main characters, Tiedmann (or whatever), was also a black guy (an antagonist) who also survived a heck of a long time.

It doesn't help that Dead Space Ignition was critically panned, and I'm not that sore over it. It's just a common trope that I started to find annoying.
