I think the idea of the game is a fun idea, but I played the demo and I wasn't too impressed. I'll still play the game though and hopefully I have more fun with that.

I liked the Gears of War games, but I was also bored by the Bulletstorm demo.

Randy (or anyone else who has played through the game), is the demo a pretty good indicator of whether I'm going to like the full game?

@Ospov I feel the same. It was okayish but more likely to be purchased when it hits the bargain bin.

Still, wouldn't be the first time I got the wrong impression by a demo...

After seeing lots of impressions of people playing the demo, I did come to one conclusion: people who didn't like the demo were playing it like it was any other bland/boring/generic FPS, rather than really having fun with finding skillshots and different ways to kill enemies, or speed-running the levels to maximize your score.

If you're playing it like CoD, it will be as bad as CoD. If you decide to experiment and have fun with it, then you're actually playing it properly and it will be a much more fulfilling experience.

So this game will never be fun for people who get enjoyment out of killing as fast and efficiently as possible?

No wonder I didn't enjoy it.

Not so much fast and efficient as creative and stylish. If you're willing to experiment to see all the insane ways you can loose an enemy from the mortal coil, then you'll like it. If you're more interested in playing from point A to point B, you won't.

I think you need some imagination to make it come to life (not insulting you), if you just straight up fire your gun like in a normal FPS you won't have fun. You have to think outside the box and try to get ludicrous kills. Having said that, this game definitely isn't for everyone so it may just not be your thing and there's nothing wrong with that. =D

See I was doing that but that was still boring. the "Style kills" were very boring for me. Fun the first time you saw them, then that was it. Sure there's more in the real game, but if it's got a bad-to non-existing storyline a long with this style system that gets boring rather quickly I see no point in getting this game. I didn't expect a story with this game, I just expected good gameplay. The gameplay bored the living hell out of me. It doesn't matter that it wasn't the campaign mode, it was still the core gameplay. Got boring fast.

I know you're not trying to be insulting, but I do have plenty of creativity. It's just the controls were so hard to get a hang of that it severely limited my ability to do anything cool. I played through the demo two and a half times and I still couldn't get used to it. That could've been due to the fact I was playing a a 360 and I usually play on a PS3.

Regardless, I'll still play one of my friend's copies. I don't think I'll buy it, but I also don't want to completely miss out on it.

I enjoyed the demo; mainly just having fun trying to do as many different skill shots I could do.
My main annoyance was that I didn't gel instantly with the controls and timing of getting the skill shots, but that's something that would be remedied after playing the game for a while...

@xreadmore I think it's supposed to be ironic and intentinally over the top. I mean judging from their advertising campaign and the parody videos they put out it's obvious that they know what they marketing this as.

What bothers me is the fact that the gameplay isn't that great. Thematically I'm fine with some exaggerated pastiche, but I want it to at least play well.

I feel bad for publishers/developers regarding demos. If you have a new IP and you don't make a demo, you have something to hide and you're shafting the gaming community.

Conversely, if you make a demo to show off aspects of the gameplay, people will break out their jump to conclusions map and accuse the game of being repetitive or lacking.

It's akin to looking for a marriage proposal from a first date. If a player comes in with realistic expectations, demos can be a wonderful sales tool. But if expectations are out of wack, many players will be turned off by a demo that, by definition, is only a demo.

@Truant Nice use of the "jump to conclusions map".

I agree the demo didn't do much for me, but it sounds like the full game has a lot more personality than what I saw.

Maybe demos should follow the old shareware model, where you release the first couple levels to get people hooked.

"Thematically I'm fine with some exaggerated pastiche, but I want it to at least play well."

Those are my thoughts exactly. Bayonetta seems to be the archetype for how to do over-the-top violent action games. It doesn't need features like "interesting characters" or "a plot that makes sense". It just creates a continuous visceral experience with super responsive controls, a silky smooth framerate, and a pervasive sense that the developers were just having a whole bunch of fun making this game.

Unfortunately, I didn't experience any of that playing the Bulletstorm demo.

It has nothing to do with expectations, and everything to do with making a good demo.

Look at Bioshock. That had 10x the expectations that Bulletstorm did, yet the demo blew people away, and the game (and now franchise) enjoyed immense success.

I love these kind of games. I loved Gears, Army of Two, etc. I can pass on story and character development in favor of good old fashioned fun. But even with that, Bulletstorm's demo was boring to me. And if it wasn't to you, that's fine, but it was to a lot of people, and you can't say that it's unfair of us to judge the game based on that.

If the huge set pieces and monster bosses are what make the game awesome, then they shouldn't have given us a demo that featured none of that. You wouldn't make an advertisement that only targeted the most boring part of your game, so why would you do it with a demo? Heck, they're one in the same. A demo IS an advertisement. Its whole purpose is to sell us on the game. Make it good.

@Vcize I couldn't agree more with your comment. a demo IS important. most people don't want a crappy demo and then just hope the game is better and just buy it. If the demo felt subpar to them then 9 times out of 10 so will the game. As someone said... Bioshock 1 had an outstanding demo and so was the game... better than the demo. There are several games out there with outstanding demos and the game itself turns out to be great. I really can not think of games that had a poor demo but an outstanding game. or a great demo with a poor game after released.

The irony and "over-the-top" aspects you reference make me think of Timesplitters (at least the latter two, I never played the first one). Of course, the game wasn't as violent as this, but it was funny how it would take serious aspects of various genres (ie. westerns, sci-fi, spy movies, etc.) and make fun of them...kind of like a spoof...though the whole game wasn't a spoof in-and-of itself.
Man, those games were soo much fun. I need to see if I can find Future Perfect for Gamecube since my Xbox version isn't backwards compatible with my 360 (and my Xbox died).

Exactly. Didn't Killzone 3 get blasted for not having a very good story...while Bulletstorm gets a 4.5 for having...no story?

In the end, aside from being first person shooters, the games don't seem similar at all. So, it shouldn't be extremely difficult to make a decision between which to get if you have to.

Personally, I'll be ripping through Killzone 3 with the sharpshooter when I get home. Maybe I'll give Bulletstorm a shot if one of my friends buys or rents it. It still seems like it could be lots of fun for a while.

Agreed. There are certain aspects of the Killzone series that are superb, there is no denying that. But the storyline has never been very deep, and for such a grey and gray morality world, they do very little to portray the Helghast as anything but mindless evil Nazis. Killzone series isn't bad by any means, but it isn't as "amazing" as some die hard PS3 fans make it out to be. I'm eagerly waiting for my copy of Bulletstorm in the mail, luckily I have this amazing DA2 demo to hold me over.

(To clarify I own both a PS3 and a 360, I am not trying to be a console elitist)

I think that's really it. You can complain about story all you want, but Killzone just doesn't have the same fun factor as other games out there. Going on just the demo I'd still say Bulletstorm is more fun.

@(Unverified) I'm not the least bit surprised - for some reason, KZ2 and 3 are the whipping-boys of the reviewing industry. The early reports I'm hearing from real gamers about KZ3 place it squarely as some of the best FPS action this gen, but if you had a look at 'professional' reviews, it looks like another cookie-cutter FPS with substandard features.

On the other hand, Bulletstorm looks like yet another space marine (OK, space pirate in this case ;)) outing with some creative mechanics for killing people. I think it sounds like a genuinely entertaining game for its intended audience (ironically, many of whom will be younger than the recommended age for playing the game), and I haven't played either KZ3 or Bulletstorm, so can't comment myself, but I would be _very_ surprised on the strength of the respective demos if KZ3 is the less of the two games.

I think a lot of that is due to the divergent goals of the two games; Killzone has been trying very hard to have its story taken seriously, whereas Bulletstorm is just having a larf about the whole thing.
So to clarify the games' intents:

Killzone - "Please daddy, don't hit me, I have a real grown-up story like those Duty Calls games!"
Bulletstorm - "Know what would rock? IF A FRICKIN' GIANT WHEEL CHASED US YEEEEAAAHHHHHH!!!1! Also: dicktits."

Bulletstorm accomplishes its goal with room to spare, whereas I would tend to pat Killzone on the head and tell it everyone's a winner.

Sounds a lot like Vanquish. I had this pre-ordered but canceled due to their cancellation of the co-op campaign. I know there is a co-op mode, but it doesn't quite make up for it.

Seems like a ton of fun though. I think the price drops pretty quickly or there will be a plethora of used copies after the Gears 3 beta. I'll pick it up one day...

Personally this is exactly the kind of game I despise, the stupid, generic [this type of shooter has been done to death] shooter with no purpose other than to do the same thing you do in every single fps, but with an attached gimmick.

Let's not pretend that everyone who doesn't want to play it can't see the light...
