@The Ginger

Somehow, I don't think this Joystiq article is going to make headlines across the globe. Seriously, only hardcore gamers are aware of Activision's tyranny.

@thisredengine And being aware, this is why I dont buy Activision's games. All the series that I liked (though few) they ran into the ground and at this point I dont even bother looking at their titles anymore. Because if its good and it gets popular it will be ran into the dirt and then canceled.

In business deficits are cut. It has nothing to do with public image or nerd raging commenters and never will no matter how much you fuss and whine.

Wow. An awful lot of devs torn apart because of one franchise. My condolences to all the laid-off employees.

@Colin

The real tragedy here, is Activision has moved on to doing the same thing with Call of Duty they did with Guitar Hero. How many studios are currently involved with bringing Call of Duty games to the masses? How many Call of Duty games are expected to hit Xbox 360, PS3 and PC over the next 18 to 24 months - about half a dozen?! Not including ports to portables, the Wii, and mobile platforms. It's the exact same thing all over again.

In another couple of years when the bubble bursts, and the house of cards that Activision is building on the back of Call of Duty comes crumbling down, how many studios are going to be shuttered; how many hard working developers are going to lose their livelihood? If Joystiq really wanted to do some hard hitting journalism, that would be the exposition they'd write - today. Not two years from now after it has become history.

@Colin Me too, Colin, me too. Though, if MW3 goes south as well (Mainly because Sledgehammer hasn't worked on a COD like game and the founder did Dead Space and Raven's last game is the mystical WW2 game Wolfenstein 2009 which only has the regen health that Halo 2 made popular and IW is half the studio it was literally), I hope that Kotick loses his job. On Kotaku, it was revealed by the former CEO of Red Octane that Activision pretty much abused the name.

I feel bad for the response that DJ Hero got because it was part of the cluster release of Hero games in 09. It was further away from a beatmania ripoff than I expected.

It's not as played out and quite different from guitar hero.

@PR0F3TA You're making the (fallacious) assumption that Activision actually treats well the developers of its top-selling games. (Hint: They don't.) Even if they WERE making money hand over fist, you have to remember that everything they worked hard for gets dismantled with one swipe of Kotick's ass-guided pen (designed by him specifically so that every pink slip he delivers includes just the tiniest amount of his own fecal matter; you know, as a going-away gift).

@rowd149 Yes, I remember the IW debacle last year. That was just horrible and I hope it doesn't happen to Treyarch, even with their flamebaity comments of it's OUR fault that there's bugs in the game.

@PR0F3TA I actually never bought any of the Guitar Hero games. I just played them about as much as anyone else with friends and family.

I don't really know what that has to do with the very real situation Activision creates for it's workers: having them pour their souls for years into a product (perhaps their own concept), only to take the rights, fire them, and then announce that they're never going to make another game like it again.

Are you a dunce? With the money you would make in a sale to Activision you could start ten new studios once the non-compete runs out.

@PersonOfSorts: The 500 *employees* didn't sell the company, the owners did, and they did so for money. Hence the word "sell."

Quit it with the sob stories about people losing jobs, they also weren't making products that sold and made money. If you want to employ a bunch of people to make things no one wants that's your business, not Activisions (apparently).

On a positive note I'm hoping that a few startups form out of ashes of Activision's "scorched earth" policies and create some incredible games over the next few years. There was a lot of great talent in those studios.

Wow, the only company that seems to made it out of this mess with the company still largely intact has been Harmonix, only because they were no longer associated with Activision. Activision essentially assigning these companies to drop whatever they were possibly working on to work on Guitar Hero signed their demise, what $#@!

Also two of the mobile devs seem to be okay. Basically, the companies that Activision didn't actually own did okay.

moral of Bizzare and 7 Studios Story. DO NOT WORK FOR ACTIVISION.

making a game for activision that sells very well won't even protect your ass look what happened to the IW Guys

company's should look at Activision and say if were gonna get gobbled up by this monster I'll leave the business.

The thing that always gets me about these articles is:

The people that think there is no merit in music games at all because of Guitar Hero alone

The people that think music games are completely dead and unworthy of further pursuing because Guitar Hero is dead

The people unaware that Guitar Hero was the single biggest reason why music games were dying, and not because of anything about the genre its self

That in of its self speaks of the whole situation. Good riddance.

Didn't know alot of companies had a hand in developing GH games other than Neversoft and Harmonix. I feel bad for those who lost their jobs, hopefully they can fix work in the future and the best of luck to those who were affected by the closings.
